The explanations it gave for many of the early moves were completely inconsistent, even sometimes describing a different move than what it actually "moved" (in notation). Very likely that its early moves look good due to being trained on enough text/notation describing opening theory, but it doesn't have any "understanding" of chess like Stockfish does.

ChatGPT is already using GPT4, at least when I used it today it was already,, this is why there is such a change in behavior, because it is able to keep more context and have less hallucinations.

@@Luiz6247 that's misinformation. free tier chatgpt uses gpt3.5-turbo, they keep improving it. gpt-4 is paid and can be easily recognized by a black logo, instead of the green one in chat.
The fact that this ai learned to play chess just by reading chess notation is pretty incredible.
It also read Wikipedia and probably many chess books.

Hey Hikaru! If you want to speed up the process, you can ask ChatGPT to stop explaining itself after every move - it'll make it faster and won't repeat itself.

As an AI language model, Chat GPT is not able to play physical games like chess.
Maybe a way to improve Chat GPT's analysis in this case is to submit all inputs to the AI in the form of the current state of the board,
and also allow Chat GPT write access to the internet. This should allow the AI to better identify only legal moves in physical games like chess.

I'm wondering if you can input the starting board positions either as a new text input or else as an image (GPT4 is now multi modal) and finish the game where it left off?
Also, as GPT uses different answers to the same response, one answer to ask to play chess is actually very rare with after every move it shows position and you can choose black or white.
What is hilarious about this video is that in some period of time Chat GPT could be the number one chess training tool. The detailed explanations of moves and strategies will make learning way better

(Hypothesis) I think Chat GPT said it was a trade of knights since it did not register the Nxd4 as capture, and then when he captured the bishop, it might have thought the capture happened.

Hikaru thinks he ran out of requests, but really ChatGPT knew it was going to lose and so threw him off the trail.
you could say at the beginning "only reply with your next move and thought process" so that it doesn't relay the entire sequence of moves leading to that point lol. It also would make it not detail why you played the move you did lol.
I think the message limit you can send in 1 hour is dynamic, I'm pretty sure I've often made many more requests than your ~25 in an hour (it might have been before the last patch though)

I've been able to get ChatGPT to play about 30 moves before it starts to devolve, you have to mess with the prompt to get it to pay more attention to the moves.

I find prompting it with this works better: "Let's play chess. I will play as white and you will play as black. At the start of my turn I will send the PGN for the entire game so far. For your turn, just send the move that you would play as black in this format "1. ... [your move here]" where [your move here] indicates any valid move for black. " It seems to break down around 14 or so turns though (GPT 3.5)
However it does seem to work way better in this video than in previous videos which is interesting. Maybe they did some review of chess conversations?
You paste the entire PGN every turn and it responds with one move. Another good way is to just paste the pgn and ask how the game continues, but it will spit out a long sequence of moves (valid moves at least from the time I tried it) afterward
For salvaging it when it goes off rails, regenerating or maybe starting a new thread are options (haven't tried this but maybe helps with its tokens cleared)
