    Cool video, some great tips. I love the one about raising your awareness of the triggers and how they make you feel / how much satisfaction you're getting from the activity. I remember HealthyGamer's story in one of his videos about how a monk tried to break the addiction of eating chips and he was instructed (by his.. monk master? 😁) to, instead of trying to cut down on them and forcing himself not to eat, to buy a few more bags instead and eat them but stay mindful of how he feels about eating them. The idea was to bring some awareness to this addiction that until then had mostly been unconscious, and it worked. That story has stuck with me for a while, so thanks for refreshing that ;)
    As a side note, about "changing your behavior when coming from a place of shame", I actually have to disagree with that it's harder to do. The way I see it, people either accept their behavior (meaning the undesirable habits, of course) and become accustomed to them to the point that they don't care about changing anything, OR they will feel shame and it will be much easier to initiate the process of changing your habits and figuring out what you can do to improve. Basically, it's much easier when feeling pain to start making changes than when you're indifferent and accepting (for a lack of better wording). The sweet spot is probably in the middle (too much pain and you're also not going to do anything), and you want to use these feelings strategically - e.g. you probably don't want to keep beating yourself up once you've identified the problem and started doing something about it - but generally there's a reason why so many of success stories feature people who've come from a really low place in their life.

    • @muchelleb
      @muchelleb  Před 8 měsíci +8

      Oooh, that's a good one. Reminds me of when parents force their kids to smoke a whole pack of cigarettes after they catch them smoking 😂Pain can 100% be a great motivator, but I don't agree that shame is a good ingredient for change. Pain can exist and motivate without shame. You can experience pain, practice non-judgment and not make *yourself* the problem but instead make *the behavioural pattern* the problem - then choose to create change. Acceptance is about "recognising what is true" rather than being indifferent. It's just seeing what (behaviour, pattern, etc) exists, noticing the impact of what exists (e.g. the pain) deeply, and not personalising it or beating yourself up about it - then choosing to change based on what you notice. We may have to agree to disagree here tho; but I think this one is more about semantics, we just have different ideas of what shame and acceptance are!

    • @bellaluce7088
      @bellaluce7088 Před 8 měsíci +2

      Shame just makes me want *more* of things like sugar and escapist content! Self-acceptance, change "experiments," and noticing what I'm doing *right* have worked WAY better for me. ⭐⭐

    • @Gigusx
      @Gigusx Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@muchellebYess, it does seem like we're more or less pointing at the same thing haha. Regarding acceptance, you're definitely on point that it's not supposed to lead to indifference, it's just that in reality it often does end up that way for many people (maybe even the majority, in my experience), which is unfortunate because it's just missing the point and making things harder for yourself later on.
      I think I've actually heard of that thing with cigarettes! A bit drastic but I'm guessing probably effective 😂

    • @Gigusx
      @Gigusx Před 8 měsíci

      @@bellaluce7088 I used shame as a potential positive factor because it really accompanies a lot of the pain that we're feeling. As in, there's always a degree of shame due to circumstances that then results in pain. But yeah, it's a fine line and things can turn bad if we let them. But I'm glad you've figured out something that works! 👍😉

    5:47 - when I took a psychology class in college/uni, my professor said something very powerful that was a much needed revelation to me about mindlessly going to eat when you feel different emotions( sadness, anxiousness, stress, etc...). She told us that this behavior begins during bottle feeding, when a baby starts crying and the mother quickly ASSUMES the baby is hungry, even through the baby could just want attention or play, or physical comfort. And the more often the mother tries to "stop" the crying with a bottle, the more the baby's brain will corelate food with comfort from all the emotions. It was mind-blowing to me and answered my own question about my very emotional eating habits. I eat when I'm stressed, and it's to the point that I started noticing this habit back as a teenager. It's still pretty bad, and I'm trying hard to break this habit. I do remember my parents saying I was a cry baby and cried a LOT as a baby. I also think my mom had severe Post Partum when she had me, which is probably why I think she would try to shut me up with a bottle from crying. 😟 I'm trying so hard to break this habit.
