  • Bonanza - Episode 85 - The Storm - While visiting the Ponderosa, Ben's old friend, sea Captain Matthew White, is forced to reveal a terrible secret after Little Joe Cartwright falls in love with and plans to wed the Captain's daughter, Laura, once a freckle-faced playmate from Joe's childhood in New Orleans, now grown into a beautiful woman.
    The Storm
    Director: Lewis Allen
Writer: Denne Bart Petitclerc (as Denne Peticlerc)
Stars: Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Lorne Greene
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 28 January 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Brooke Hayward, the daughter of producer Leland Hayward and actress Margaret Sullavan, appears in this Bonanza episode as Laura White, the childhood sweetheart of Joe Cartwright. Now all grown up, Laura wants to marry Joe, but neither he nor her father Captain White (Frank Overton) approve of this match. What Joe doesn't know, but Captain White does, is that Laura is terminally ill -- and the Captain is determined to withhold this information, lest Joe marry Laura out of pity. Reviews:
"An old friend of Ben Cartwright, sea Captain Frank Overton arrives with his daughter Brooke Hayward for a visit to the Ponderosa. Back when they were kids Michael Landon and Hayward had a short case of puppy love. Now that they're older and have hormones working that's looking to grow. But not if Overton can help it.
This is a tender romantic story and should be viewed on its own merits. Unfortunately that old joke about the brides for the boys on Bonanza is what comes to play here. Some excuse was always found to keep the Ponderosa a bachelor household. Usually the bride was killed off. Those of us in my age group who were regular viewers of Bonanza in its first run are somewhat jaded for the reruns.
Still Landon and Hayward really personify a Waterloo Bridge, Love Story type love." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Bonanza has always been my favorite show ever! The stories and classic episodes make this show unequaled! What a joy that these episodes are available to view on You Tube. Without giving away the plot I just wanted to say that the chemistry between Michael Landon and Brooke Hayward is electric! It's refreshing to see shows like this where the whole gamut of emotion is depicted in a way that challenges the intelligence of the viewer...The acting was superb and in my opinion superior to anything that Hollywood releases today!
Actors of today can learn from the value of a show like Bonanza.
Brooke Hayward had an innocence and beauty about her that made her so appealing! And the charisma of Michael Landon is unequaled. Michael's legacy is so powerful. We need more actors of the caliber of Michael Landon in Hollywood.
The show is pure romance! The beauty of the two young actors is so appealing! You actually feel like they were in love...perhaps they were. Brooke Hayward is the daughter of Margaret Sullavan and Leland Hayward. Margaret Sullavan was known for her role in "The Little Shop Around the Corner"...the classic with Jimmy Stewart! I can see the essence of Brooke's mother in her acting..
The love scenes between Michael and Brooke are electric! This is how a romance should be shown...the only contemporary actress I would say that comes close in appeal is perhaps Sandra Bullock...like in films like Hope Floats and The Lake House. But this particular Bonanza episodes outshines them all! I've seen this one a few times and it moves me every time!
Thank you Brooke and Michael for an inspired performance. And also Lorne, Pernell and Dan for your contributions to this marvelous show...." Written by taylors8 on IMDb.com

This was, indeed, and old-fashioned love story, including a beguiling musical score right out of the 40's. As has been observed, Joe falls in love with every girl in the show at one time or another; but this is an early show, and Michael gives a commanding and seasoned performance here. It's distinctive from all his other involvements. A marvelous actor, indeed. He was in his early 20's in the episode. I admit to using my handkerchief!!

I appreciated the comment made to Ben by his father-in-law. And at the beginning of the movie, the comment by Joe about the beautiful, white star flower blooming early. And in my mind, and dying ahead too early, but still beautiful. I’m pretty sure that the actress who played Laura would have still been alive when Michael Landon died. I wonder how she felt remembering this movie when she was starring in this movie with him. It seems kind of prophetic to me, only it was the man who was dying before his time. For sad endings of movies it nearly rates right up there with the ending of Roman Holiday. 😢😢😢😭😭😭

Shock, surprise, and love in bloom, and then the blossoming. This blossoming is marriage, the new paradise created with family, another alarming shock and the love goes to new depths of renewal and then the passing in love, happiness, comfort, and peace. The family is brought together for support and comfort while the pain is subsiding and the father and brothers bring wisdom and sanctuary to the shocked disturbed heart where love once reigned supreme with old dreams into new dreams of life moving forward. Great episode, love Bonanza.

That's not true. I think the oldest woman he went out with was Julia Bulette, who was 12 years older than him, so hardly old enough to be his mother. He was 23 and she was 35. It's true he had no objection going out with older women because when Bonanza started Michael Landon was so young that practically everyone was older than him, anyway. Laura was definitely the best girl for him, though. She worshiped the ground he walked on and appealed to his loving and protective nature.

This show drove me up a wall when I was a kid. After spending my summers on my grandparents' ranch, this is not at all what real ranch life was like.
If there's a storm coming, the cattle should be brought into areas close to the house and barns, then watched just in case they stampede. (Apparently the Cartwrights didn't use barbed wire?)
It was very important to keep the cattle close to the barn and/or the haystacks, especially if there was a possibility of snow, so the animals wouldn't go hungry and lose weight. Having food close by would help the cattle come through a storm in better shape.
