- Here is a review of our Coleman Skylodge 12 person tent we have used over the past two summers. This video was from our trip this past 3 - 8 September camping East of Tarryall, Colorado in the Pike National Forest close to Topaz Mountain.
During our first afternoon as we finished setting up everything we endured a several hour rain / hail event and experienced no leaking anywhere throughout our tent. The temperatures got down into the low 40's every night but with the help of Mr. Heater Buddy (modified with a stove fan), and knowing how to light it at 10, 676 feet, our tent maintained a comfortable temperature to sleep. We also used sleeping bags rated down to 0 degrees F.
Kirsten and I both like this tent due to it's size and roominess. It did however take us some time to set it up while at altitude. It is also a heavy tent to lug around in and out of the truck. I like the zippered pass through for the propane hose I used to fuel Mr. Heater. We have not found any defects with our tent. Prior to taking it out on this trip, we set it up in the back yard and heavily hosed down every inch of the tent looking for any leaks. The inside stayed entirely dry both during this test and during the storm we had at the camp site.
Overall, we would recommend this tent for anyone who has a larger family or like us, who just want a lot of room for two and a dog. Coleman's claim that it can sleep up to 12 people; sure, if the they all laid side by side and stored all their gear outside the tent.
If you have any questions, post them in the comments section and I'll let you know what we think or have experienced with this tent. - Zábava
Way better review then the last one I saw on this tent.
@brianpeters5715 Thank you Brian for watching. Appreciate your comment.
What a wonderful and honest review, thanks so much! Like others, you've sold me. Glad I didn't stop at that other guy's review who got the defective one. That poor guy.
Thanks for watching. I still feel bad for the other fellow getting a bad tent.
I have had this tent for a couple years now, I love it. It's pretty quick to setup when you get the hang of it and it's nice to have room to hang out in when it inevitable rains, like it does every time we go camping lol. And the screen porch means all your things stay dry but you can keep the dirt out of the inner area.
Absolutely!
Thank you so much for this review! The first video I saw was the other negative review and I almost gave up on this tent. Decided to check more reviews and I’m happy I did! I think this will be our next purchase!
Same for me prior to buying this tent, only the one negative review. So, thought I'd would put my review out there. Glad it helped you out. Happy camping!
Wow great set up
Thank you. It was a fun trip.
Currently looking for a new tent and I think you might have sold me! I also now must have a cot and a night stand because your set up looks so cozy!!
Having a cot along with the 3 inch memory foam we use on them makes for quite a comfy sleep.
Happy Camping!
Thanks much. Love the info..
No problem. Hope it helped out.
Thank you for the review, almost wrote this one off due to the other guys bad review.
Thank you. When we bought ours, I found no reviews online other than from Coleman. Thought this review could help others out.
Thanks for the video. I’m looking at the 10 person in this same tent. I think it should work fine for us. We have three small boys. I believe the 10 will give us ample space. Biggest thing I like is the screen room attached. I do wish more of the cabin style tents had a full coverage rain fly.
I agree with you about wishing the rain fly was bigger. Fortunately, it worked great for us when it did rain while camping there. We use the screen room as our transition space from outside to take our shoes on and off without bringing in dirt to the sleeping area. I'm happy this video has helped you out by sharing more info about this tent. Happy Camping!
Absolutely. I like a screen room for the kids mostly. Far as a better rain fly I figure I’ll just buy a tarp large enough to cover the entire tent in the event something crazy comes up. Overall do you feel the quality of the Coleman is pretty good? Ozark trail has a similar tent basically same thing for a bit less money
@jew8201 I have no experience with Ozarktrail in person, so I can't compare the two. I've used Coleman for all my large tent needs over the many years of camping and the quality is good in my opinion. With this tent, we've done some very thorough inspections of all the seams and water testing with it in our back yard. It passed everything we were looking for and it has done us well over the past two seasons camping. Of course, there is always a chance for a bad apple to pass through production. Hence from lessons learned, it's always good to set the tent up and inspect it immediately after purchasing so it's much easier to exchange or replace if needed.
I have to agree with. Coleman is just a trusted name. They’ve been around so long. And they make some really nice camping products to go along with the complete setup
Another question for you, did you set the tent up before use and treat it with a scotch guard or some type of water protection treatment. There’s several different ones out there, I’ve read it’s a good thing to do before use of any tent. (I’m not new to tents or camping may sound like it but it’s been many years since I have been in the game. Looking to get back into with our boys like we did as a family when I was growing up!)
How does this tent hold up in wind? Where I go, there are very large wind storms that blow through, and the winds can get 20-30mph. There is minimal tree coverage. My Coleman Prairie Breeze did really well for a while, but 1 stake lifted in the storm and caused the rear pole to break. Was wondering if there was more flex with this tent.
We camped once in an open clearing on a hill top and experienced heavy winds a few days on that trip. The tent handled it with no issues. We were on solid ground as well, so the stakes were in the ground solid. The tent has a lot of stake down points, and I use them all. I never use the original stakes, I buy the longer, more sturdy stakes that stay in the ground better. You can get sturdier stakes at any hardware store around here.
Hopes this bit of information helps.

Hi, thanks for this great review. Can you confirm the total length/width is 19 x10 feet. Coleman's website QnA seems to suggest the main room is 19x10 feet and the screen room is an extra 5x10 feet, for 24 feet total length, which doesn't seem accurate. Thanks very much.
Thank you for watching. The tents' deminsions are 19Lx10Wx7.5W. 10ft wide at the back and 7.5ft wide at the front with overall length of 19ft. The screen room at it's widest is 10ft and narrows to 7.5ft wide where the door is and is about 5ft deep in length. So the 5Wx10L is not extra space added, just the actual size of the screen room with the exception of the side with the main door, which tapers to 7.5W. The main sleeping area would then be 10Lx5W. The overall foot print is 19Lx10W(back)x7.5W(front)
I appreciate your question and hope this helps.
@@lifewiththevillamors4099 Thank you very much for the detailed response. /Dave
Does the interior (screen room to sleeping area) door zip?
Yes, it does. We have it unzipped and rolled up to the side in the video.
Very nice set up! Do you folks worry about bears?
Thank you. It is quite comfortable for us.
As for the bears, we are always "Bear Aware" when out in the wilderness. We keep our food, snacks, and pleasant smelling toiletries out and away from our tent locked in our truck. We also refrain from putting on lotions or anything else that make us smell good as that could attract bears also.
In addition, we keep Bear spray handy at all times for "just in case". Other than this, we don't worry about the Bears much at all. We just enjoy how peaceful and relaxing it is to be alone in nature.
@@lifewiththevillamors4099 Thank you for your response and reply! I find it helpful and will heed your advise! I hope to enjoy the great outdoors, soon!
@dinebonte4014 No problem. I wish you all the best and have fun with your next outdoor adventure.
Do you put a tarp under the tent?
Yes, I always put a tarp underneath any tent I use. Just be sure none of the tarp is hanging outside the bottom edges of the tent so it doesn't funnel rain directly underneath. Plus, the tarp helps keep the tent bottom cleaner when putting together and packing it up.
Thanks for your question and Happy Camping.
Does it get wet in the screen room when it rains?
It does not as long as we zip up the rain fly for each window.
