I remember it too, was living in England full time back then, and I'm the same age as Martine McCutcheon. A bit like re living your late teens/early 20s, watching this lovely soap. Started watching EastEnders in 1992, when I first came to England as a language student

It was to raise awareness at the time of children going missing, hence since the 90s parents have become more aware of the dangers of just how easy it is to steal a child, as I child minder today I am shocked with how many children I care for that dont know the stranger danger code.
@@Lulu-ut9pvYes also it probably helped children at the time realise how they should b careful when someone offers them something like sweets or whatever it may be or not to go with anyone we didn’t know.
I remember my Dad telling me once ( especially when I started travelling on my own) not to get in a stranger’s car or aspect a lift from un licensed taxi thankfully I never had that experience but his advice and this episode helped me to b cautious about my and my friends safety Xx

Yes I think shenl was posing as a teacher and made out Billie's behaviour was bad but she was just distracting Carol and Alan while the men grabbed BIllie Xx

I could be wrong but my guess is she may have been pretending to be a teacher and used all the tactics to distract Billie’s parents? I don’t think employers parents or management teams had the ( assuming the lady worked at the school) the right resources to check people out and it might’ve been that it wasn’t so easy to find out about that person’s background etc I think parents and others alike had their guard down and they were so much more trustworthy then they are now Xx
I think the woman in the cream jacket had something to do with the kidnapping because she saw it and then turned the parents away so they could not see it

Ryan Clarke no she wasn't a teacher. She was claiming to be a supply teacher which means she lied and was only there to distract Carol while the two men kidnapped Billie

It was hardly Carol’s fault she and Allan were distracted by the woman posing as a teacher and she used all the usual tactics and excuses to draw Billie’s parents in as that was happening the kidnappers lured Billie by giving him sweets and then walked him to the fan then carried him it was okay then the teacher ran off and got into the van with them.
As I said to others parents were more trusting and a lot more relaxed than you wouldn’t think in your own mind that your child would b in danger or come to any harm yes those awful things have been happening for several years but you ( other than when it came on the news sometimes) weren’t fully aware of it as you are now and we didn’t have the right resources to check someone’s background and we didn’t the criminal record checks we do now after Ian Huntley killed Holly Wells and Jessica Chatman so it’s probably a lot easier to check things out but still Xx
Never really liked Carol. Dont bring her back again
