When I had cancer, my sweet boy Lux, was constantly coming up and smelling my breath. Followed by a paw on my cheek. Usually several times he would pat my cheek. He was very gentle, for that mother he still is very gentle in the present tense.

So happy to hear a validation on the number of sounds a cat can make. My cat tried to mimic what I say and uses his different tones until he gets it right. Three or four cat “words” is the most he can say at one time and when asked what he is saying ( because of course a lot of it just sound like gibberish) he tries to repeat it exactly as he did the first time. This s a very informative video, thank you.

Most of the facts I already knew.
My male cat had (he is no longer alive) a very strong preference to use his left paw. If the kibble feeder thing clogged it was his left he would use to rake some out to get it going again. He would also use it to get a hold of the bottom of kitchen cabinet doors to open them
"meow" wasn't the only "cat word" he would use to talk to a human. He would also say something like "murrat" as a signal for I am over here.

My sweet kitty, Beatle, had an impressive vocabulary. He got a broken leg when he was still a kitten and started speaking English. I have a clowder of four. I have a rescued mom cat and two of her four kittens. My granddaughter has one of the females and my oldest daughter’s friend adopted the second male for her two daughters. At the time they lived in West Virginia, but have since moved to Texas. I kept one female and one male, and the mom. The male cat has epilepsy and some other health problems so I wanted to keep him myself. The little female was bonded to the male and he to her, so I kept both. The mom is just such a sweetheart and beloved by my 92 year old mother. Obviously meaning of words not necessarily understood by cat but cats have different sounds for different feeling and wishes. I also believe my boy cat chats more to me than my son because he knows I enjoy it and it gets a response…..he is a clever cat. Although he tends to express himself physically by batting his paw firmly but without claws on top of my hand to indicate he wants something usually to be petted.

I watched this documentary once that itemised all the points proving that cats are the most efficient hunters in the world. It was fascinating.
Also, regarding the point about cats only eating around 30% of their kills: the ancient Egyptians took full advantage of this instinct when they adopted cats as working livestock. Every household had a cat that would hunt for the family - not only to add to family meals but it would also serve dual purpose of controlling pests to crops. They then went on to deify cats.
Ancient Egyptians are not credited as being the first to domesticate cats but they appear to have done it most successfully (and I'm sure the cats thought so too 😉)

I was concerned about this so told vet and he explained all about it. Apparently vet claimed that my cat didnt like smell of product……can’t say I blame him probably rather noxious stuff….but smell fades quickly enough after day or so. So stops bothering cat. Referring to number 24 about cats killing & eating prey, we've noticed that one of our cats seems to want to bring his prey to us. Often still alive. It appears to be a gift for us, or possibly showing us (with pride) what a great hunter he is. This has occasionally been a problem where a mouse that has been brought home has escaped and taken up residence in the house. Further, this practice of bringing home prey seems to have dropped off somewhat once he was neutered.

However, I have discovered that all of the cats who didn’t care for catnip DID go crazy over valerian. Only fact I didn't know was the 90.2 DNA ONE. Hubby and I have a clower plus one. When we get a new kitten ( only way we can bring a new cat PEACEFULLY into the group). They meow at us for a while but soon stop. They only time they meow at us is when they accidently get locked out side. In winter when it gets COLD outside we close the cat door in the evening through the night. They will come to the living room window (my spot) or the dining room (hubby's spot) and meow to get our attention. They will meow at friends who come over to visit.Other than that our cats are silent. Had a few different veterinarians through the years tells us that our cats think of us as part of their 'CAT' family and that is why they don't meow at us. All our cats know their names. Lived in Riverside CA years ago. Paint store on one side, mortuary on the other, and big fenced in open lot behind all 3 places. One night our cat Moonlight didn't come home . Not the next day either. So the second night went out calling for her. Figure she must have run into trouble in the empty lot. She answered when her name was called, I could hear her VERY faintly. Tracked her down to the mortuary she was up under the roof. There was an air vent under an eave. Hubby used a hammer and undid it got her out and put it back. There had been a hole in the roof because they were having some work done. They had finished the day before and closed it up. We figured she had been in there when they came and hid in a corner from them. Then once the work was done she had no way to get out. When we got our 1 st cat I told hubby she was going to learn her name I wasn't t going to call "here kitty kitty". He thought I was crazy, didn't think it would be possible. Moonlight was the ONLY ONE who answered when I said her name. Ever since then he has thought it an excellent idea.

I have a tuxedo kitty named Spunky, and most of his sides and middle are covered with the black coat I can see white hairs that stick out on his back legs and a few on his sides. I've tried gently poking them and his reaction is immediate. he turns to look at what just poked him, vs when I gently poke the rest of his fur he doesn't react as quickly if at all. It's actually kind of cool.

Because he was a brown tabby persian, the breeder priced him several hundred dollars more. I didn't care. He's the one I wanted. He was so smart and funny. He loved me and was so affectionate. I told him one day when he was coming into the house, "No more outside in the night. You have to be home by five o'clock." Do you know he was always home by 5 or before? And he doesn't wear a watch! We have multiple cats but besides Pufnstuf, and Bella who we get the lactose free milk for, none of the other cats have any interest in milk at all. They do, however have their own favourite "people" foods. Elmo goes crazy for olives...when we get pizza, I have to let him "steal" the olives off one of my slices. Bandit loves yoghurt...he doesn't want it on a spoon or in a bowl, he has to have his own little pot of yoghurt, just like mine. Dot loves salad greens, any greens really...when I make a salad, she has to have her own bowl of greens. She'll even eat the tops of carrots. The way that other cats run into the kitchen when they hear the treat bag...that's how she runs in when she hears the bag or container of salad greens being opened.
And, yes...non-cat people think I'm crazy for catering to my cats like I do. But they're all rescues, and they can have whatever makes them happy. 😻

I had to agree and laugh at the memories of a number of this facts; and you answered a couple for me,
I could never figure out how my cat always knew when I was coming home, I would vary the time, route, but there she was always sitting on the window sill, watching the direction I was coming from a good 5-600 yards away, she never missed.
    1 cat I had .
in the past would fight me for the gherkin/pickle, that came in MC Donalds burgers, terrible trouble if it only had 1 slice. another cat liked cabbage, potato chips, porridge.
another cat distinctiely would call 'Mum' when he came in the cat door downstairs, (husband thought I had lost the plot MAJORLY), until he heard him do it; he would call out, I would answer and next thing he was bounding up the stairs straight to wherever I was, (and he always faultlessly came to greet me in the right room, made sure I was there, meowed a hello, then left to do whatever he wanted to do inside.
He also figured out how to lift the latch on the window to open them, usually when I was trying to keep a particular cat INSIDE for a vet visit. He was nicknamed my boyfriend, because he would always sleep next to me and occasionally stretched out his legs to push hubby away, luckily hubby didn't mind.
    Can't remember the other similarities
