Dream Theater - The Necromancer (Rush Cover) - Jones Beach NY - July 11th 2003

  • Through all my years in Dream Theater, as the Setlist writer in the band I would always throw in occasional one-off Rush Covers into the setlists...
It was a tradition every time we played in Toronto as I threw in “Jacobs Ladder”, “A Passage to Bangkok” and “The Camera Eye” throughout the years at our Toronto shows. We also covered “Different Strings”, “Tears”, "2112: Grand Finale" and excerpts of “Working Man”, “By Tor and The Snow Dog”, “The Analog Kid” and “La Villa Strangiato” through the years as well...
But there was one evening in the summer of 2003 when we were playing at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in New York, that I decided to throw in a real deep Rush gemstone to the completely unsuspecting audience...and later that Christmas, I posted a video from my archives to share it with everybody as a Holiday gift.
I think with Neil’s passing it seems like a timely time to re-share this DT rarity from my archives as a tribute to our biggest influences and our fallen hero...here is DT’s 2003 rendition of Rush’s 1975 classic deep cut: The Necromancer

In a world where most people know Rush for Tom Sawyer, this was a ballsy choice to play. Only a true Rush fiend can register this song mentally and emotionally. And only DT could have done this. Thanks for the post. RIP Neil Peart. Safe journey to Cygnus X-1

I think the members of rush were in their early 20’s when they wrote this song. Think someone in today’s music industry can write and play something of this caliber in their 30’s let alone 20’s?????

My reaction was , WAIT , WHAT ☹️. I looked over at the computer screen. My day went from good to complete sadness. First time I seen Rush was 1984 , then in 1991 / 92. Primus was opening.
Went both nights. Then my last time seeing Rush was 2002.

This song is an absolute hidden Gem for people that dont listen to RUSH. Such a good song. RIP Neil "The Professor" "Pratt" Peart. Gone way too soon. His life was just beginning, getting a second chance at family life and actually getting to watch Olivia grow up something he probably missed with Selena as he was constantly on tour with RUSH in the 80s and most of the 90s. Its almost like his life came full circle. He suffered so much tragedy in 97 and 98, losing Selena and then losing Jacqueline to cancer (or as he called it in Ghost Rider a "broken heart") and now he leaves behind Olivia and Carrie. I still cant believe he is gone. Ive been listening to live dvds, all my vinyl and looking over my RUSH collection of stuff since Friday, and now I hate that I missed the 40th anniversary tour, telling myself at the time I would see them next time, not realizing there would never be a "next time". Being a fan for only 14 years and one month being introduced to them in grade 9 english class when our teacher told everyone to bring in a song to listen to the last day before Christmas break and one of my only friends in that class brought in 2112 and listening to that song in that class changed everything, from that moment I could never get enough RUSH. The last concert I saw was on the Clockwork Angels tour with my dad. I still cant believe he is gone. His lyrics were such an influence in my life.

Goosebumps. Start to finish. How have I never seen this? 9 year old me dropped the record player needle on this track more times than can be counted. The nod to yes is amazing too!

Mike you are the greatest living technical tactical drummer and I just realized how long I've been watching you put on just a clinic for anyone who loves drummers, drum solos. I saw you and DT at Flash Gordons in Cleveland in 92. At that time I could not imagine seeing you guys in a wonderfully shitty dirty rock club but it was maybe my favorite show ever. Hope to see you at Eddie's 40th. 🤘

Rick King The only relationship I have ever had with Mr. Peart was the connection I have with his work. The music, the books interviews and performances and those will never leave me. For that I am truly grateful. I choose to celebrate the life of a brilliant man. The real relation.

Farewell to the King. RIP Neil! You inspired many to pick up drumsticks and mallets and create symphonic harmony. Your lyrical and drumming prowess is timeless and will live on. In the space time continuum we danced to the mystic rhythms, journeyed to seek the sacred river Alph as we fly by night under the limelight driven by the spirit of the radio.

Playing Drums is not just a question of technique, even though this is essential of course! You also need musicality and heart. A kind of instinct, or superinstinct I would say. Neil was a Master. And a Master has technique of course, but also a big heart/passion which drives him all along his playing. Neil was always putting his heart in all his playing. He was never cold, as many other "technical" drummers... even if they were or are very good! Always fluid, intense, and full of passion. And always at the service of Music. This was, along with his outstanding technical mastery, his very secret I guess. I've always thought that Mike was, and still is, the only true musical heir of Neil, at least in the Rock scene. Not only because of his great talent, but because of his personal musicality and spirit, both so close to the ones Neil had. Mike plays what he likes to play, and the way he likes to play it. Always with heart and passion. As Neil did all along his incredible career. They way they think of drums is basically the same. There is, and there was always a kind of "underlying theme" between them. A special link which comes more from the inside than the outside. And this is why, in my opinion, Mike is the more legit, so to speak, to cover Neil's works!

There are so many awesome drummers since buddy rich with all kinds of techniques and skill but only one that could be "better" than Neil in my opinion is Mike. I hear Ringo was awesome but to me he had great timing which is #1 thing a drummer needs but his skill level 7 of 10, but many at a 10 but Portnoy and a few others are off the chart. Manchini ,is good but sloppy compared to the precision of Peart and portnoy
