Your channel has been so helpful to me. I began watching as a pre-dent and pre-HPSP student. Now I'm already at the end of my D1 and 1 month away from going to the military summer training. Thank you for your informative video and more importantly positivity mindset you shared. Please continuously update us with what's going on! Thanks so much for all of your informative HPSP videos! I am a Navy HPSP recipient and just started dental school this week, and your videos helped me throughout the application process and continue to help me now (just watched your reimbursement one recently). My school doesn't do summer breaks, so I'm not sure if I will be able to do any externships during my time in school because I may have to opt for school orders. Do you know if your externships/shadowing while in school affect your placement when you graduate and get your orders to your duty station? Thanks again for all you do!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I understand. I didn't have summer breaks and opted for school orders too. It won't negatively impact your placement. It just depends on where they need new LTs to go, so you're good!

Hi Dawn! Yes of course you can. You pretty much have a normal life and can rent/buy wherever or whatever with whoever you want :)
Hey I’m joining the navy as a dental assistant and was wondering if you choose where your stationed or if it’s on your contract mines on mine but I don’t know if that’s only where I’m shipped out just want to know if you knew where you were stationed before going to A school?

Thank you for going through that salary calculation! That is already better than I was expecting and when you add that to the sign on bonus, stipend, and tuition payment the HPSP seems like such a good deal for 4 years of service!

Plus free housing (officer housing is generally pretty great) medical/dental care, and 30 days paid vacation every year 🤩
Hey I am currently a senior in highschool and I have been researching everywhere weather if it’s best that I’ll go to college right after highschool or go to the navy to help out my parents lift some of the weight on their shoulders so they don’t have to pay for my tuition. What are you advise to someone who is unsure about joining the navy or going to college. I am aspiring to become a dentist or a registered nurse in the future. Btw I love your videos.
Hi Dylana! That is very admirable that you want to help your parents. It is difficult for me to suggest what to do for your own future though. To put it in perspective though, you need to go to college to take your pre-requisite science courses to even apply to dental school. So if you delay that, it might take more time to get started on your dental school journey. I know the military can offer ways to help you financially with college too, but you'll obviously need to go through boot camp, training, for them to help cover those expenses. You'll have to serve in the military active duty. Lots to think about, but I'd reach out to a military recruiter to get more info on that as well. Best of luck with all your future endeavors!
Hi there! My husband is a Navy HPSP recipient and is currently in optometry school! Do you know of anyone who went through optometry school with the scholarship and how it differed from your experience? Also, how soon should you reach out to a detailer to find out the options for duty stations? Thank you for all the help and information!
Hello! We only had 1 optometrist in our whole ODS class. I believe at least up to the point of ODS, it will be very similar. I'm not sure how it is after that though. Typically, detailers should reach out by 1 year. However, I don't think I found out I the location of my first duty station until 3 (?) months.
I have a question on the HPSP. So lets say after your four years of undergrad you get accepted into a dental school located in california, does the military fly you out and have you take the courses in person or do they make you take the courses online?
Dental school is four years and you can't earn your DMD/DDS through online class. With the exception of the situation due to the pandemic, there are some programs that may implement a partial online/in-person lectures. When you get accepted to dental school, you attend as a normal dental student. You won't really do anything military affiliated unless you choose to go to ODS during a long break. Majority of dentists went to ODS after they graduated school. Hope this clarifies.
How often do you get deployed and how long are you typically deployed for?
It really depends. Some commands have taskers for short TADs or deployments. Sometimes you can get tasked with short notice. Unfortunately, you don't know until it happens.

No, it shouldn't as long as it doesn't affect you medically.
How are your assistants in the clinic? Are they corpsmen or civilians ?
There are both. It just depends on the individual, but most of the techs/assistants I've encountered have been positive experiences.
I am currently in my last semester of undergrad. And I was considering joining the navy to cover for my tuition.
I would like to know the timeline after graduating undergrad.
Like in order to apply for the scholarships, you would have to finish the OCS, which is the 13 weeks of training school. After this training school, (assuming you’ve been accepted into the dental school) do you go straight to the dental school, or are there additional requirements in the navy that you have to do before going back to studying? And how long after training school do you wait to apply for the scholarships?
Not quite, you apply to the scholarship as you're applying to dental school. If you get accepted to the scholarship there is not really a difference between you and a regular student until you graduate. After that you'll go to ODS which is 5 weeks. Then you have a few more options of where you go.
The comment below from James pretty much answers the question! Like he mentioned, if you're interested in the HPSP track (which is what I did), you'd apply to HPSP and dental school at the same time.

I was wondering if you had a chance to know where your credentialing tour would be before you decided between doing that, gpr, or aegd? It seems like if I want to do general my best bet is to get a good credentialing tour but if I'm to get a less optimal one I'd be better suited doing a residency, if I understand what you said correctly. Also since I imagine you're deeper into your contract now; relatively how often would you say Navy dentists have to relocate?
@@occlusal_trauma Hi! Thanks for the support. That’s great that you’re starting up a club. To answer your questions - Unfortunately it is a gamble on which credentialing tour/residency you’ll be placed in. There should honestly be a more transparent method on choosing but it’ll just depend on availability, so you will just have to make your decision based on whether or not you want to pursue a residency. As far as relocation times, it is generally every 2-3 years, depending on the billet/location, but that’s an average time. Hope this helps! Best of luck with everything.

Thanks for watching! It's kind of like a "normal schedule." At least at my old clinic, it was from 0700 - 1600ish M-F. Work/life balance is great!

I am thinking about joining the navy I am currently in college majoring in health science and I wanted to not be in debt for dental school. would I have to join first then apply as a scholarship or could I do that after I got my bachelors?
You want to apply for the scholarship at the same time you apply for dental school so that once you're ready to start dental school, you'll already have the scholarship.

Yes. It depends on what kind of collaterals/duties you pick up. However, as you climb up the ranks, it is pretty expected to start taking on more administrative/department head/leadership roles which involve admin work. It's definitely a balance, and you do work with chiefs and leading petty officers in clinics to help with this. A huge team effort!
@@harrrMONICA Thank you for the reply. I'm also a military dentist here in the Philippines. It's a little different here though, they hire you after graduating and after passing the boards. We do not have the same program wherein they pay for your school tuition and other fees. It would be nice if we were given the same opportunity. Are you worried about being out on a ship?
In my case, not particularly. But if you do take on the Navy HPSP, you can't eliminate the fact that sometimes you can deploy on a ship or even overseas.

Thank you for watching! This honestly depends on location/number of dependents/specialty licenses/years served. Some cities (i.e. San Diego) have much higher living expenses compared to other cities. You'll get a higher BAH (basic allowance for housing) in larger cities like this. As of right now, once you earn your DMD/DDS licensure, you get a $20,000 bonus/year (taxed). Some states do not tax on income (i.e Florida). There are a lot of factors that come into play, but here is a generalized calculator: militarybenefits.info/military-pay-calculator/

When I went thought boot camp (like 8 yrs ago, I’m a navy vet) they had to do a root canal on me and I was so worried about who was gonna pay for it. I even asked the navy how much I was gonna owe. The dentist kindly laughed and he said something like “honey you don’t have to worried for that, you’re covered” lmao. Btw thank you for explaining things like BAH nobody explained this to me when I was in the Navy I just kinda had to figure it out by myself. I’m now in school about to finish my BA, wondering what I’m gonna do after I graduate. I even thought about being a dentist in the Navy, still not sure smh

It is 4 years. Out in private practice, salary is much higher. However, it has definitely been peace of mind not being $500,000 in debt after graduating dental school. There are lots of other benefits past the money though.
