@@JohnDoe-kv3kd The Leapster was a edutainment handheld similar to a GBA that was really popular in the 2000s, but died in popularity when they switched to something called a "leapad" to cash in on the iPad craze. I'd say that the reason it says special edition on the back is because the comic bubble inflated to huge proportions during the late 80's early 90's and publishers were trying to cash in on anything that was pop culture related hoping collectors bought it.
Art Manwhinney also handled art for some of the Archie Sonic issues at the time these books were done, he did come back for special stories throughout its publication with a more cartoonier take than other artists

Not only did I have this book as a kid, but I still have it. I found it last year while cleaning out a closet. I actually have two of them, the shoe one and the secret admirer one. I was a huge fan of the Sonic comics growing up, so it was only natural that I'd be drawn to these books.
I saw this video's thumbnail in my subscription feed last night and nearly fainted. I'd completely forgotten about this book, and owned it as a child, likely purchased from one of those book truck days during my time in elementary school. I remember absolutely nothing about it, just this cover, and it being one of my first ever books as a kid. Looking forward to watching this video, Gill! This is the content I'm subbed to you for! 👍👍
Good thing you did this now. Next thing you know Sega will pull a Capcom and tell you that you can't show any of the art inside any book featuring any of their intellectual property.
Oh. I remember this book. I thought it was just a fever dream. But I remember that back in the day, this book resided in one of my classes. It's weird. And seems like a bizarre hodgepodge of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Sat AM.
This seems to be based off the Archie comics that came just slightly before the cartoon series. Sally's design is based on the earliest version of the character. Even the writing seems more like the earlier issues than the SatAM series. Sally would never admit to liking Sonic in the series proper, and Sonic would rather have Sally join him in the fight, because Tails was considered the child of the group. Also AOSTH Robotnik for some reason.
I remember getting 3 Sonic books via Scholastic: a how to draw book, a Where's Waldo style one, and the picture book Robotnik's Revenge where it tell of how Bunnie was partially roboticized. I still find it odd that these were all set in the SatAM/Archie setting but still used the AoStH design of Robotnik especially since the comic came out first in November 1992. Best I can figure is that the publishers asked Dic for model sheets, they sent old ones hence the pink color scheme for Sally and Rotor being referred to as Boomer. Possibly the AoStH sheet for Robotnik was sent instead of the SatAM one.
This brings back memories of the episode of AoSTH where Sonic has his shoes stolen in the middle of the night and he has to find out who stole them. This one showed gross peach feet instead of blue gross feet though. I'd love to see you go through the other books, I had no idea these even existed myself.
