Thank you for posting this! My truck (86 GMC) wasn’t turning over, wasn’t even sounding like it was attempting to turn over, and only made that grinding hum when I turned the key. All the other videos out there on starters just talked about a ‘click’ and not that grind-hum. Now I know what the problem is and can start going about fixing it.

It was a pain to take out because of the angle but once I did, sure enough, it was immediately evident that it was the problem (internals were starting to seize - later determined to be the result of a bearing wearing down). Took it to a local shop and they were able to fix it up like new in about two hours. Put it back in and the engine started up without a problem or a hiccup.

Those old Chrysler's had gear reduction starters and the bendix would kick out every time the engine fired and did not continue running ,the noise is the starter running after the bendix gear disengaged from flywheel and coming to a stop after you realease the key . The loose starter on van contributed to the failure of the bendix gear . A little locktite will keep the bolts tight. I just replaced the old starter on my 4.9 300 six 90 f150 with minnie gear reduction starter for a 92 thru 96 , they will fit all 4.9 ,sixes,302 and 351w . 1/3 LESS AMPS AND DOUBLE TORQUE! also replace 91 or before ford 2g with 3 g alternator. The old 2g is a fire hazzard and stuggles to keep up with the load demand only 75 amps . The small case 3g is 95 amps with better cooling. And the large case 3 g from 130 amps and up . I used 130 amp large case on 88 4.9 300 , no more starting problems! Enjoy the videos ,keep up the good work!

I also have a 81 Chevy G30 4x4 van. The ACDelco starter is about 2 years old. Now it makes a loud bang when I try to start with hot engine and it moves the flywheel very slowly. It needs to cool down for 10 minutes before i can start the van after a stop at the gas station for example. The solenoid cap was very loose and one of the bolts holding it together is broken. I tried to tighten it all down but with no effect. I also noticed that there are multiple cables at the big positive terminal. One big cable from the battery and 2 smaller cables. When the starter has a hard time to turn the flywheel, you can also see sparks between the cables at the positive terminal. I ordered a new Bosch starter and hope this one works better and longer that the remanufactured ACDelco starter...

Hey Ziggy, I believe it depends on the make. The last time the starter was changed in this van was 1997.

Hey guys love watching your videos, you were very helpful on helping me locate my PCV valve. I also have another question about my truck. Well, my truck is a 5 speed manual transmission. When I first start it up in the morning and put it in reverse the backup lights come but won't move. Sometimes I have to force it in reverse causing the syncronizers to grind. Is it time for a new clutch or do I need a full rebuild?

You must be deaf. When he turns the key and lets it off you hear what sounds like those cars you pull back and usually let go but when you lift it up after pulling it back you get a sound very close to that. Go buy some hearing aids or some hater-raid

you know you got your dream job when you pick up a starter motor and react at 3:18

I just bought a 1974 International Harvester Pickup with the AMC(American Motors 401 Muscle engine) 330 horse built into this pickup when new. It still looks like new but on the way home from driving it from Phoenix, Arizona I started hearing the starter when I would go to start it , sounded ok but in the middle of the turning it would slow down then crank as usual and start. Did ok until I got to San Antonio when I stopped for a fountain soda. Well naturally it did not start. Only had 120 miles to get home. When I went to start it engaged and locked in place no return on my ignition switch. I could not turn it off. So I jumped out and removed the Positive cable to kill the motor. I found a mechanic through a parts house that sold me the wrong starter. Took the wrong starter back and located a man that redid starters. He did it... the mechanic put it on. Started right up and I went on home after several hours stalled out. But when I went to an inspection garage for Texas inspection when I went to leave it started but the noise came back I went ahead and drove 6 miles home after three miles the noise stopped and I got home safe. Later I tried to start it in my driveway but it was a no go. Took the started back off and took in for a rebuild it was all burnt up inside, solenoid bad and starter. Checked out it did not register on the gauge. Waiting to pick it up tomorrow? Never seen this before. Had to put 2 1/2 bottles of water in my new battery too.

First of all,YOU DO A LOT OF DRIVING MILES!!!! I wonder if the starter needs to be shimmed. It seems it may be too close to the flywheel, and once engaged, it does not release. Keep me posted on what they find.

I decided to rebuild this starter. Then plucked a 750 Cold Cranking Amp Interstate battery. The 600 Cold Cranker was not getting the job done. My new Interstate battery kicks the motor great so far no problems.
