My first DSLR was the D50, and it was the camera that made me sit down and properly teach myself photography. Once I got the bug I gave that camera to my brother-in-law and I bought a D200.
This video brings back some good old memories. My first digital SLR was a D50. I bought it new in March 2006 and it served me well until I got the D300 in 2009.
The D50 is still a great camera! With the Nikon DX 35mm 1.8g lens, the photos look modern and has great ergonomics. Adobe Lightroom camera calibration also helps a lot to retain the original look of the Nikon colors from the CCD sensor. Awesome buy for $25!
Azriel Knight agreed. The AF-D screw type auto focus compatibility also makes the camera unique for its consumer pricing level. It's great that it works with all auto focus Nikon lenses... a feature no longer found in entry level bodies. Flash sync to 1/500th is also handy when you need it. I Lastly, if you prefer jpg out of camera, be sure to experiment with the 3 modes. Not a lot of people know that the default color mode IIIa will give a saturated, Velvia-like look. Switching to custom color mode Ia will give a more natural look with more pleasing skin tones. However, I'm not a fan of the dated aggressive noise smoothing / over sharpened in camera algorithms.
There's really nothing like a good CCD sensor and black and white CMOS still can't always get it right except the Ricoh GR and maybe Fuji they're doing an okay job with the acro's
Great video, and beautiful pics. I know your video was a while ago, 2016. Found your video looking for information on the Nikon D50. Purchased the D50 from Mercari for $65.00, but the D50 came with a Nikon 35mm 1.8, that alone made me spill my coffee, and a Sigma 18 to 300. One lens alone worth more than the whole kit price, and then some. I was planning to set the D50 on a shelf as a museum piece, but quickly got curious. I’m a Nikon guy who shoots weddings, events, etc with the higher end modern Nikons that get the job done. But, I love this little D50. This cameras CCD sensor at 6mp rivals the naked eye look of images coming from newer, way more advanced CMOS sensor cameras. I’m also a film and darkroom guy going way back, and taught photography with Darkroom as an Art teacher for years. Kudos to you for taking on film cameras in some of your videos. Oh, once you go Nikon, there is no going back.
The FE is an excellent camera, and I really wanted one way back when. I got to use, borrow an FE with nice glass when they where new, and the results where amazing. Then later went off into the land of Minolta digital land due to a couple inherited bodies, and lenses.
Funny enough the d50 is the one we started with 14 yrs ago, it was a silent horse. As far as exp comp, I think you can switch the controls to go more naturally. On the new nikons I know you can because that’s the first thing I do after turning on and setting to RAW full size, and manual mode
Friend, good morning! I recently bought from a friend a Nikon D50 for $ 100 with 10 thousand shots. I'm studying to master all her manual functions and even though it's only 6.1 Megapixels and is considered an old camera, I think I can still do some great work with it ... of course not professional, but personal. At the moment I'm trying to take astronomical pictures with her ... I know the limitations of the camera, but I believe it's not impossible ... well, I actually know it's possible, but I have not yet mastered the manual settings for what I want. Thanks for sharing your experiences with her!
Yep, you're not wrong there about shooting the Nikons. I'm a Canon convert. I was shooting the 60D, but when it was time to step up my game, I went for the D800 and the D600, simply for the dynamic range, low light capabilities and sheer picture quality of the Nikons and their glass. I'm now looking to sell my 2 bodies or maybe just the D800, and upgrade to a D810 or maybe add a D500 to that. Just bought a Xpro2 with the 35mm f2 and the 18-135mm f3.5 - f4.5 only for street and holiday and around the home.
Bought a D50 last weekend! 40 Euros in Germany! The images are very nice and I like the 28-300 Sigma lens that I partnered it with...Was trying to get a Fuji S5 Pro from KEH but it was snapped up before I could get my wife involved
On what you said about the customisability of Nikons, I have a F-801 which has a self timer that can be set between 2 and 30 seconds, like any number of seconds between that, not just 2 and 10 seconds.
I just got an Nikon 1 version one I wish it had focused peaking and I got to use Sunny 16 for manual lenses but other than that it's a very capable camera very underrated. I'm really missing old CCD sensors I think the d50 is very similar to the Epson rd1. D-50 sensor different than the D90 in terms of film like quality.? If I can find a D50 for under a hundred I'll challenge myself I've seen some people pull off some pretty beautiful 16 by 20.. on a side note I always see people complain about the size of an image they can pull out of the camera funny thing is most of them will never print that big if they print at all.. the next company that pulls out a full frame with a CCD sensor might actually feel quite a little niche more than they think. although I do not know how big you can go with a CCD sensor
Note that the d200 Is not a ccd, however there is a similar dslt to the d200 that has a superb ccd sensor: the fuji s5 pro. You can also check the konica minolta 7d
Hi Azriel.. I like how it feels, quality of build and pictures.. I am pleased for you that you picked one up for a great price.. Like you said it is good for testing lenses and as I bought d5100 new and like to avoid endless shutter count.. I have to admit perhaps I am crazy. Only having a very rarely used Cosina C2 for last 30+ years I have overdone it buying approx 20 film cameras and 3 DSLRs in the last 3 ! I especially like the Canon 20D..
I enjoy a your videos. I have a Nikon D70s which was the mid range camera in the same time frame. I still use it occasionally, when I want to shoot with two cameras. They are capable cameras
My first DSLR was a Nikon D-100. I still have it to fall back upon but the focus seems to have gotten a bit soft. For some things that's not all bad. It's a sturdy camera and has withstood a lot of use.
You can set folders within a card on Canon, but I don't think there is much to chose between them to be honest. I've never met anyone who can accurately say which manufactures camera which shots were taken on. The only reason I shoot Canon is because my older brother did.
Sub added!! Just bought a d50 as my 1st DSLR! Low buck to get me into photography... What adjustments should I make on the camera?? Any help&advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers
Azriel Knight, sorry for being erratic. I meant these numbers: i.cbc.ca/1.3145552.1436476561!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/original_300/battalion-park-rocks.jpg .
Oh ok..I couldnt quite understand you...you said in the video something that sounded like a word having episode Picoro sound to it at 1:17 in the video...anyway.....thanks...Im looking at getting that camera..for around $100..
I am still using mine...still going strong.
What you think about the screen?
My first DSLR was the D50, and it was the camera that made me sit down and properly teach myself photography. Once I got the bug I gave that camera to my brother-in-law and I bought a D200.
It's a really nice camera and likely to stay in my permanent collection.

Since I'm a Canon guy this is technically my first Nikon DSLR as well :)

Yeah it's handy to have around too in case I come across more Nikon lenses!
Azriel Knight agreed.

Welcome to the world of Nikon. PS. Nikon's configuration is proper, Canon's is backwards :P
Jeff Cruz #shotsfired
That's how I roll; my film that is.
Great vid, for what its worth, I think the newer models are more fluff because all they really added was rhe ability to record video
Agreed!

Thanks for the kind words Joe. My main 35mm shooter is a Nikon FE now. I absolutely love it. And you're right, Nikon all the way now. :)
The FE is an excellent camera, and I really wanted one way back when. I got to use, borrow an FE with nice glass when they where new, and the results where amazing. Then later went off into the land of Minolta digital land due to a couple inherited bodies, and lenses.

Nice find! Thanks for sharing!

I just came across an F-801 and planned on selling it, but the focus sounds really screechy, is that normal?
The AF motor in mine is scratchy too, good to hear that's normal anyway. I tend to use a manual focus 50mm lens on it to get around it
I just got an Nikon 1 version one I wish it had focused peaking and I got to use Sunny 16 for manual lenses but other than that it's a very capable camera very underrated. funny the timing of this episode. i'm shopping for a d200 currently. those old ccd sensors can make black and white look like film.
It's a solid camera!
Note that the d200 Is not a ccd, however there is a similar dslt to the d200 that has a superb ccd sensor: the fuji s5 pro.

hey man! that's great, what lens are you using with D50?
Oh man, wish I could remember, this was years ago.
just bought that camera yesterday, feelsgoodman.
also sick video mate.
Thanks! Hope it works out for ya!
I love using the D50 even though I have a d5100 sitting there...
What about the D50 do you love?

Thanks for the heads up. I don't see too many nikons. I suspect they're coveted a little more than other brands.
Just bought one today! Can't wait to use it! Thanks.
Hope it goes well!

Very nice vlog. Liked all of it.
Thanks Merlin!
hola. la tengo hace un mes muy buena camara muy buenos colores que solo se logra con un censor ccd de pixeles grandes .
I had one of those, was actually my first DSLR. Not bad at all, unfortunately it broke and wasn't worth repairing it.
R.I.P. D50
I found the same thing when I used a Nikon. Wouldn't mine expermenting with an old Nikon myself, they are built well.
Plus their lenses are more compatible.
You're selling it more to me. Might have a browse.
What about trying a Pentax DSLR next time? Their lenses are also more compatible.
I have a K10D infrared converted :)
Sub added!! Just bought a d50 as my 1st DSLR! Low buck to get me into photography...
What adjustments should I make on the camera?? Any help&advice would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Its been awhile since I shot with one of these. It really depends what you are shooting.
IR photography just add ir filter for the d50.
I'm wondering will we see a freshly oiled fully bearded or clean-shaven host on tomorrow 's vlog after a visit to the gentlemen's grooming shop today
Glen Rea cut an inch off a couple days ago and no one noticed :)
Can you show us the memory card that you're using? Does high speed sd work on this camera?
I found this list of approved memory cards

Azriel Knight, sorry for being erratic. I meant these numbers: i.cbc.ca/1.3145552.1436476561!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/original_300/battalion-park-rocks.jpg .
Those are here in town, yes. I don't think they are in the video though.
I have Nikon D50 and i need a good lens for shooting in night. Can you recommend me some good lenses?
I'm not a big Nikon guy, but a wide angle and open aperture are a good start!
Nikon 35mm 1.8
50mm 1.8g
how old is this dslr compared to todays dslrs?
I think it's about 10 years old.
where did you get this camera from...picoro....?????

Oh I see. I said "Pickerazzo"

Azriel Knight Thank you sir

You should initiate a copyright claim against Tremendous Bear Oil :D
Never heard of Bear Oil :P
