  • WHY This isn't A GIGGING Guitar | Harley Benton Fusion 3
    I recently made a video demo of my new Harley Benton Fusion 3 HSH FBLB Guitar from Thomann. In the demo I said it wasn't a gigging guitar but I gave no explanation as to why, which a few people commented on. I thought I'd make a video to explain why I said that in my review for anyone else wondering my thoughts!

    I totally get this. I've always used straight ahead strats - 3 single coils, but in the band I'm in now I've been using a Levinson RH4 which is HSS with coil tap AND a 3 way active circuit that does tone shaping and boosting. Its a brilliant guitar but I spend more time trying to fight it than play it, and I'm getting close to going back to basic strats and dialling in sounds with my Helix. You can't really emulate guitars with a helix, but you can do enough to be able to keep things simple at the pointy end of the chain.

    Hi, one small thing to mention is that if you sit and play an SG, they sit so that the neck extends over to the left and the bridge is just over your right leg. With a Strat type, the guitar sits so that the neck is over to the right and the bridge almost seems like you have to reach behind your back to find it. So on Strat types, I put the strap button on one of the screws that bolts the neck on. Now, when you stand up, the guitar is shifted to the left and feels so much better, for me anyway, might be worth trying on any Strat type.

    When doing covers it is all about how close to the original you want your sounds to be.
    I mostly play my Blade RH4 which i configured is such a way that it now has HSH config, both humbuckers are switchable to single coils and both humbuckers can set to either being in parallel or series.
    With this config i can get almost any sound i want.
    I use my iPad for the setlist and have written down the settings per song.
    This, togehther with the pedals on my pedalboard (which are all switchable via a pedalswitcher and midi) gives me almostveverybsound.
    I often get compliments from as well the audience as the band members on how close my sounds are to the original.
    For me that makes playing covers all evening more enjoyable.

    Whenever somebody says this isn't a😮 sponsored video, this isn't a paid promotion I still think in the back of my mind they could be lying doesnt mean they're just going to tell the trut..... hey Harley Benton bought me a bunch of these guitars to talk good about it. I mean why would you tell somebody they sponsor you and pay you to talk good about their product in the first place, that's something you'd want to keep hid anyways because people are already going to assume that you're only saying the good stuff because you got money or free stuff out of it. Sorry i had to rant. I mean why you even say that because why does it matter anyways just let everybody assume you're an honest person and go with it don't even bring it up!

    • @RobGalley
      @RobGalley  Před 2 měsíci

      Quite simply - content creators have to disclose paid promotions or not. There’s even a tick box when uploading CZcams videos to say if a creator has received payment or a product of value. So, that’s why I mentioned that it wasn’t a sponsored video.

    The first reason for me doesn't make any sense. If you want only bridge and neck tones, just switch to bridge or neck pickups. Can't understand why having more options makes it hard for u, as you can just not use those options. The rest of the reasons you stated, make a lot more sense.

  • @GaryAlexanderMusic

    More to the point would have been nice, but thanks for clearing that up. I skipped over to where you started to actually explain it. As soon as you said a Gibson SG was your choice, then that said it all "for me" 😉. I need not go any further. Thanks again for helping me decide to pull the trigger today. I have one waiting in my basket at Thomann. I'm heading to checkout now, thanks to your videos. These are exactly the type of guitars I've been playing since around 1985 when I switched from a Gibson L6. Once you find your way around with all those options and become comfortable, you may never go back to a SG style guitar. Just my opinion of course. Great playing, clear explanations, great videos brother. Keep it up.

    Does it not have locking tuners? If they aren't screwed down tightly, they may be the culprits in terms of going out of tune. As for the trem-bar being in the way, remove it. The thing I'd prefer is rather than a push-pull pot, there are push-push pots that make it simpler or the 5 way switch that can give you 10 positions by two different angles. I was recently looking for something with HSH, this guitar seemed like the better alternative or a Ibanez RG470DXBPM which has locking nut. I'll be watching more videos before I get anything again. I own several other guitars, most recently I bought a Sire S7-FM-TBL which also has locking tuners, it's a HSS though, but it sound outstanding and clearer than my actual Fender American Standard Stratocaster HSS Sienna Burst 2008, I also own a nice Gibson Les Paul Studio 50s Tribute Gold Top with P90s...and five others.
    Cheers!

    A good guitar, but I've also stuck with relatively simple guitars when playing live. I have an inherent distrust of trems so I prefer fixed bridges for live gigs. I tend to stay on a bridge pickup 90 percent of the time and don't really use split tones.

    Interesting video! I own a Charvel Guthrie and a DK24 HSH, this is very similar and I was looking at buying one for gigging to not use the good guitars. With these 'Super strat' type guitars they do need to be higher up than say a Gibson SG/Les Paul. Try adjusting your strap when your sitting down so its just touching your leg. Then stand up with it, see if its more comfortable! It should be dead easy to play as most of us practice whilst sitting down, it might look a little odd at first but your posture may thank you!

    I have this guitar and love it. I’m not a gigging musician though. They use such quality constructed components for the price. I haven’t experienced any tuning instability with it, but I have my trem decked for dive bomb only. This was my first Wilkinson trem and I’m extremely impressed. Might even be better than the G&L duel fulcrum bridge.

    very interesting...to me an HSS is perfect for live, of course of the flexibilies in sound and tone......and the normal strats, teles and paulas are perfect for homerecording....;-). my only question would be, if this is a good HSS Strat in comparision with Fender, Suhr, Schecter or others, which being far more expensive......how can a guitar be so cheap with rather similar components...? all Harley Bentons i tried till now haven't convinced me so far. Either they weren't nice to play, the neck didn't fit, the frets weren't neatly made, they felt cheap, and the pickups didn't convince me, or they didn't hold the tuning and their attack was very slow

      @RobGalley  Před rokem

      That’s just the thing - getting this guitar & trying it live made me realise I didn’t need the tonal variety. Hence the whole point of this video. Plus I disagree slightly, whilst you can of course achieve different tones with the amp etc I still personally lie on the side that the player is the most important part of any rig. I’m confident SRV would have sounded like SRV no matter what amp or guitar he used, Same for EVH.

    Hey Rob thanks for your lovely content. I thought I'd ask if this guitar equipped with seymour duncans 59 could hold it's own (quality and sound wise) agaisnt a les paul standard or SG. By quality I don't necessarily mean esthetics but rather setup and playability. I'm considering it as a backup and alternate tuning guitar to a LP standard, but I'm a bit skeptical since I haven't had any experience with cheaper guitars recently. Would love to hear your thoughts on that. Cheers. Robin.

    Watched on the bike in the gym. Great point about Netflix that’s why I got rid and chose sky cinema instead and I think it’s why cheap super markets like Aldi do well. Less choice, just the things you need.
    Personally, I wish I could live on the 2nd and 4th position of the pick up selector on a HSH guitar for cleans, I love that twangly super strat tone.
    Sadly you’re comparing this to a legend which is the SG, and it’s never going to get there ha. The bridge and trem getting in the way, this is an issue. When we try guitars in store we never try them standing up so we overlook these things. This is why Kirk Hammett plays with tape around his hand because of the issues you mentioned.
    A small trem with no locking nuts wouldn’t be ideal, I’d have 5 springs on the back and just lock it down to the body.
    As for tuning, gotta put your own strings on first and give the guitar neck time to settle as it flexes with tension and temperatures so I’m not surprised you had tuning issues.
    Would I take these over a Ibanez RG370AHMZ at the same price? Naaaar no chance.
    But what a great insightful video. I have many guitars which all do different things. Only the RG and Jem are very similar and the Jem should be even better when I get it back and the neck is C shaped more because as I mentioned, I didn’t play it standing up and didn’t realise how wide and flat the back of the neck is!
    Also, the single coil on your guitar will no doubt get in the way of your picking. I usually have to lower them or change for a flat cover.

    Your primary guitar should not have a tremolo IMO especially if it's the only one for the gig! Tip:you can change the height of the tremolo arm, you can screw it down into the position you want, if that doesn't cut it, you can trim 5-6 mm. of the end to get it even lower! But that trem doesn't hold up well, get the 100 version and you'll be fine. BTW. I have a Fusion 2 HH with the trem blocked, it's a solid guitar.
