  • Learn how to change your rear differential fluid. In this process I unbolt the differential cover (pumpkin cover) because there is no drain plug. Then I make my own gasket with RTV because I couldnt get a gasket for this differential. Only basic tools are needed and anyone could do this job. Remember to "thumbs up" the video if you found it helpful and leave a question/comment below. This is fast and easy maintenance to do to keep your car or truck in tip-top shape.

I know you take your time to put these videos to help other people such as myself who knows very little about cars. What you also do is give people the push to try and do these things themselves instead of going to the dealer and pay their high cost. I truly appreciate the time and effort you take to do all these videos to give us an option of doing these things ourselves or taking it to a dealer. I also want to say as Dr. Ronnie Pace said 5yrs ago in his post, you do an amazing job communicating on how to do these fixes in a clear and concise way, so the average Joe Schmo "Like Me" can do this. Thank you Chris.

just wanted to add, some rear differentials also house "differential speed sensors." They to have a magnet on the tip that collects metal flakes and sludge. Im just saying that it may be beneficial to clean it prior to refilling your differential.

That 8.8 diff is not at all “hard to find a gasket for”, but you’re correct RTV works just fine. It’s good to clean out the “sump” area , the deep part just inside the bottom. Use a few paper towels or a rag to soak up and wipe out. That’s where the “gunk” will be.

Great video. Only one comment I have is cleaning a lot before removing the filler plug and cover would be a good idea. Just using a wire brush and clean because differentials really hate dirt and contaminants. Cover the gears with a towel when you’re cleaning the surface to assure nothing gets inside. 👌

Your tutorials are clear, detailed, and timely for me. I just purchased a Ford Ranger, XLT, V6, 3.0, 2wd, regular cab. I followed your instructions for changing the fan clutch--saved a lot of money.
The truck was very noisy. Now it is quiet but can still hear the engine stay at a high rpm until I come to a complete stop. It's not too loud but makes me feel that something still needs attention. Would you have a guess? I checked my throttle wire and it's not too tight. I've been considering changing the throttle body but I'm not sure it's the problem. I might not have a problem at all. Love to know your thoughts on it.

Thanks for the helpful video, did have a question - Changed both front and rear diffs on my jeep today, when I took the covers off I noticed on both that there seemed to be what i can only describe as "soap bubbles" here and there (not on the cover but inside the diff). The gears looked fine, didn't have any metal flakes, and before I dumped them I checked the level and they were full. When the fluid poured out into the pan I didn't notice any bubbles. With most fluids seeing bubbles is bad, is this something i should be concerned about? Thanks.

    ChrisFix -
I was able to find a gasket for my differential cover. If you can find a gasket for it, do you normally put a little bit of RTV on that gasket to help seal it. If so, would you put a thin coat on the differential and on the cover itself (ie both sides of the gasket), or would you skip the RTV completely, and just let the gasket seal it? Or, would you skip the gasket completely, and just use the RTV?

Freddy Patterson Brake Cleaner, he has it but is hesitant to tell people to to spray it in there. Any good shop will blast it with brake cleaner then wipe and refill.

Good video although I would add that it wouldn't be a bad idea to rinse the old fluid out of the diff with some brake cleaner.

hi Chris I know you did a video on your mom's car but how is this different on a Mercedes SL. ? ? do I need to just remove and replace fluid or do I need to do the whole flush?

Chris my 2006 ford ranger rear differential calls for 80-90 weight can I use 75-90 weight with out causing damage.

Mike Cullinan Use the weight the differential calls for. Using anything else can result in damage.
