For me Mk 1 was the original, Mk 5 was the greatest comeback & Mk 7 sealed the reputation of this icon (maybe even the best GTI so far). IMO Mk 6, although it looks soft & mild, it is still the best looking. 09:17 reminds me of my recent birthday celebration 😃.

Oh the Mini-Disc.. I was in my late teens in the late 1990s and was developing a rather expensive passion for the HI-FI system. Of course my parents weren't planning on financing my new discovered hobby but thankfully I was old enough to start making my own money during the summer breaks. Beside spending it on clothes and rave parties, a significant part of my income went towards various components of a HI-FI system. After buying the Marantz amplifier, CD player and a pair of B&W speakers, I got myself the Sony Mini-Disc. I was the happiest guy alive. I was recording various mix discs from CDs and from the radio and eventually bought a portable Mini disc, similar to Walkman. I've connected that to my car stereo through AUX input and blasted St Germain's new album "Tourist" for months. The whole car both was one giant subwoofer. You can imagine my neighbours and innocent people walking their dogs when I came through with a thump-thump-thump that broke widows..Oh, those were the days...

Is there a better car presenter than Rory. He doesn't try to be funny or controversial like some others do ( and fail at ). He isn't a technology bore like some. He just presents with passion and information that everyone can understand. Instead of just catering to hardened petrol heads.

I remember when the Clubsport 40 years came out my dad was tossing between that and the VW Tiguan of the time to replace the MK6 Golf GTI in red and manual but I’d still buy a 76 model

@@bruts82 thanks for answering. I used to sell Volvos and they had all touch screen and I'm aware there is a difference but I've heard too many negative stories about it, and if the whole system is a "mess" than that's kind of a deal breaker. Ride quality is important for me as well; where I live there are a lot of rough roads. I was selling VWs when the MK5 first launched, it was an impactful car in so many ways, just amazing. So years later I'm looking to recapture that spirit of a car that I loved so much. Plus I just saw that there is no manual mode with the DSG and that is just a shame. Thank you so much for answering.

Really enjoyed this, a great bit of work as ever, Rory.
The Mk1 didn’t have tartan trim originally though. You (along with most reviewers) claim it did, you refer to it and then show a shot of the trim in the test car. Which isn’t tartan! 😂

Mk 1 you were driving was a campaign model with 1.8 not 1.6. 14" wheels instead of the original 13". Shame you couldn't get hold of a 1.6 just to complete the story. I know I sound like a geek. Had one back in 84
