This woman was very brave to plunge into the 50s without already having the skills needed to handle the food challenges. One inaccuracy is that those girls would have been right by her side all afternoon, or doing all the other housework.
From what I understand from my grandparents, they adored the 1950's for the simple fact that there was more food and variety. My grandmother lived on a farm in WWII as a child and in 1944 and 1945 she almost exclusively ate carrots. Carrots for lunch, carrots for dinner, until there were no more and the new harvest had to come around, which were, you guessed it, carrots. She hated carrots for the rest of her life, so I can image the 1950's looking like paradise.
When you have seen further back in time for dinner before it's interesting to see how similar the 50s kitchen is to the 1900s kitchen. The war really thrown people back in time..
I wish they would do this series with a modern family that has a mom who knows how to cook well to see how hard it would be for her to tackle the old school appliances, to see whether she'd get the hang of it and be able to provide nice meals for her family with what she has available. It doesn't seem sporting that they chose Mum's who don't cook. If they don't cook in modern times how are they supposed to tackle this?
What a great show!!! I really had no idea how bad the Brits had it after the war. I thought life was much better for them from what I had seen in the movies, but it goes to show that reality is completely different from what is portrayed on tv. I am grateful to whoever created this show and even more so now that I have seen how blessed we are to live in an era where our quality of living is so incredibly high (regardless of our income bracket) in comparison to the past generations. Growing up in Albania as a young teen I can tell you that I deeply empathize with the kids, but I also see just how spoiled our kids are today and that they truly need education to understand the food struggles of the past. When you have nothing to eat, even a piece of liver (which I used to hate and now I actually like) can be a godsend. Thank you UK for always creating such interesting and educational shows. Much love from an Albanian in Canada!
I think the shaped metal piece between the knifes have to rest under the led on the side and then you leverage the knife into the top lid. Best on the side towards the lid.
www.wikihow.com/Use-a-Can-Opener Pierce the top near the rim, then balance the blunt loop bit in a the groove, and kind of saw it off...I always used to wonder where the cartoon-tin-can look with jagged edges on the lid came from--must have been from these old-school tin openers!
I figured that out and remembered seeing some years ago, but they look like they could be dangerous. The "Spam key openers" were a pain too-if it went off-track you couldn't open it .
I'm not that old born 1972 and we had one. I could use it perfectly. I did have to laugh in shock?? How could the mother not know this type of can opener ?
The daughters appear younger in this decade. In the earlier decades they looked more sophisticated. Actually I wonder if they filmed the latter decades first, and then went back and filmed the 1800s to turn of century, later.. They look rested, and younger, even Rochelle in this decade. Yep I bet that's what they did.
After Supersizers, I decided to see if I can find more documentaries like that series, came across this, and - boom - Giles, who was in Supersizers, is here too, haha! I’m so glad I found this, I love learning about the mundane side of history.
Wow women were real heroes back than, now a day a mom would see her kids fooling around in the yard rolling about in the grass with the dog, and just wave it off caus the kids are having fun. But in the 1900's a mom would run outside in panic caus she would end up beating scrubbing and washing clean the kids clothes, whilst still being responsible for the food to make the table and the house be kept clean. It must have felt like being caged or in prison. And whilst the women could not afford a quick sit down with a cup of tea, the husband sat in a chair reading the paper not even thinking of getting up and lending a hand in any of his wife's chores.
I feel so bad for women back in the day! Here the family is relatively comprehensive about the bad food, but back then it would all fall on to the mother's shoulders.
2020 and I still work full time and cook and keep my house sparkling clean and take care of the garden while my husband loafs around. Nothing has changed. And I keep my hair and makeup looking great.
And you are able to do all this without a washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, or vacuum? I dunno I only have a washing machine and fridge out of that list, so maybe you don't but even just the washing machine saves me a lot of time and energy. Are you also currently shopping on ration restrictions? Can't imagine being a housewife and having a fulltime job while having to do all chores by hand, plus shopping every day as well as dealing with austerity and rations. and then also doing hair and makeup everyday.
I thhink they should be more greatful for their food, at least, the bread is way healthier than nowaday's bread. And potaotes also are. I would love them not to complain so much.
Logistics question - how on earth does a home get transformed in style so quickly? Is it every weekend they do a remodel? Hats off to the family if that is how the show was made.
If the cake wasn't done cooking, then why didn't she put it back in the oven? It's not like it was burnt on the outside, just put it back and wait for it to be done
The stories my grandma would tell me when she and my grandpa moved into the city but the stories from when they grew up on the farm was worse than what they had to put with lol
Oh for fucks sake. Just use a knife to open the can if you don't know how to use the can-opener. I get that she never really cooked before, but she's not very resourceful, is she?
Made to entertain us. The women of this era were so good at everything that they did, rarely did they do the blunders shown here. This series is slanted towards women working outside of the home instead of focusing on the history, a pity there isn't more positive, all about goof-ups and earning money, wanting out. Lots of laughs but frustrating to see how modern women are portrayed as incompetent in the 1950's home. Interesting...
women of the 50's were heroes
considering some of the things they had to endure in those days I agree.
This woman was very brave to plunge into the 50s without already having the skills needed to handle the food challenges. One inaccuracy is that those girls would have been right by her side all afternoon, or doing all the other housework.

Good point

Well it seems that she got better with practice. The dinner was deemed a success.
thank you for sharing...I was born 1952 but don't remember how hard my mothers life was...thank you God...we are so blessed today

I make fun of her can opening abilities , but I doubt I could do it either 😂. Great series . Further Back in Time for Dinner is just as good!!!
I think the shaped metal piece between the knifes have to rest under the led on the side and then you leverage the knife into the top lid. Best on the side towards the lid.
I remember using those can openers when I was a child. My husband and I had a good laugh watching them trying to use it.
I'd still like to know how the heck it works?
So would I.

Just like "The Supersizers"! 😍
Reminds me of my grandma . She became resourceful when food got tight . Love the show!
i love this series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So thankful I was born in 1982....
The royal jello crown is too funny!

Ilovepollinators ! Back in time was filmed first and then Further back was filmed afterwards so you're spot on.
This was the first episode they filmed

Thanks for uploading, I dearly enjoyed watching!
The 1950s home looks great, very cozy compared to the awful 70s style. 38:12 what a nice Dad!
Ich spreche kein Wort englisch...... Aber diese Serie ist WUNDERVOLL 🌸🌸🌸

Hilarious especially the royal cake !! Haha
That birthday meal was so grim! Cold liver! 😂

of I see Debbie one more time
(If you don't know she is their maid in the 1900s to1930s)
I love Debbie!
why didn't she heat up the meal for the children ,she has a stove
I love this show.

I'm starting to think the mom is just not much of a cook no matter the era... 😊
The truth is, her husband was the cook in the house. So, for the early eras, she's gonna get lots of practice in...
from Israel - thank you for this important series
I loved the Robshaws. Hope they're doing well.
lol i still have a gas oven and no dish washer ... that's the second world for you
This family is real original British family/people.
Lol guess the Canadians were lucky. They got their fridge in 1949 on their show.
Thumbs up on each video. Thank you itsgary.
Love this
Kids qith the school lunch were so annoying. Ours still looks like that every day in Finland 😂
Well I know I shouldn't really say this, but I like to see all the envious looks of my friends :P
I thhink they should be more greatful for their food, at least, the bread is way healthier than nowaday's bread. And potaotes also are. I would love them not to complain so much.
Pastry: your hands are too hot. Run cold water over wrists
at 34:56, She really hate being in the kitchen making food. I would love it, making something new with "new" skills. and at a holiday no less.
Logistics question - how on earth does a home get transformed in style so quickly? Is it every weekend they do a remodel? Hats off to the family if that is how the show was made.
I swear there is always one downer going to every video giving it a thumbs down.
Please add subtitles to your videos with translation option. Thank you.

Is t me or does Giles always look hungover
The stories my grandma would tell me when she and my grandpa moved into the city but the stories from when they grew up on the farm was worse than what they had to put with lol
I love this series. Guys, am I the only one that finds Rochelle to be crazy hot?
Is anybody else here because the History Chicks sent you?
It's embarrassing that she cannot even make toast.
Oh for fucks sake. Just use a knife to open the can if you don't know how to use the can-opener. I get that she never really cooked before, but she's not very resourceful, is she?
What was the title of the background music when they go picnic..

...and then they cut off heating supplies...
I wonder how old those parents are in real? Father must be something between 60 and 70 already if he was born in 50's
