  • Recorded at the Rocky Mountain Train Show on March 5, 2016, Ed Dickens, UP Steam Program Manager, discusses the team's findings and progress on the 844 FEF steam locomotive restoration. Ed also reveals UP's anticipated target dates for completion of the 844 and 4014 restoration projects. Our apologies for the low brightness of the scenes where Ed is on camera. The room lights were turned off so that the projection screen could be seen more clearly.

Thanks for posting this presentation. A lot of information. The firebox rebuilding process seems very complex and important. Ed did an excellent job showing us all the projects. Westinghouse sure game through with the parts for the air brakes. Well done video.

There are not too many people that impressed me in life but I tell you this guy is one of them. Maybe it's the exmilitary force that's in him. But I am very impressed with his pride and attention to detail. He is on my list of someone to meet.

1973mre man, I wish my railway town still had preserved steamers. we're in Norfolk southern territory, and the only preserved engines they have are old deisel locomotives that our abandoned steel mill used to own and operate. they use them as shunters now.

I concur, the key trait here is pride which seems to be have been replaced in today's world with self centered narcissism

Thanks for the video. Lot's of great information! Thanks to everyone involved in the restoration effort for the 844, 4014, and 3985. How fortunate we are to have these superpower steam locomotives, which will one day be in operating condition, for all to see and enjoy.

I think it pretty dam cool that they are using steam locomotives in the 21st century

At least Ed said the 3985 will run again and is talking about it. I hated when no one talked about the Challenger. It like everyone just for get about the 3985 and only 844 and 4014 where going to be the only 2 engines running.

speaking of the FEF class, in the future of the UP Steam Program will there ever be a chance that they'll restore one of the FEF class locomotives like UP #833. I know like why would UP need another FEF class locomotive running but just imagine two UP FEF's running together like brother's, sister's, or brother and sister.

  • @annajeannettedixon2453

In the UK a Boiler ticket last 8 years then it has to be dismantled and what ever need replacing gets sorted and pressure tested then steam tested to 300 psi or 250 psi
so are small depends on boiler type

12:05 abatement crew is going in originally Wasatch was suppose to do it but they botched the job, Ed terminated them, and he had to bring in this abatement crew. Everything on #844 that was covered in asbestos went in the bags even the ceiling had to go in the bags thats why #3985 is in the shape it is no one removed the asbestos.

9:58 Exhibit B and I'm sure you saw the stacked bolts thats a no no you place a ridged staybolt here and run it all the way though and cap it with a stud you do not weld near caps.

boy that was in bad shape could have ended very bad if let go for too much longer with that damage to the pipes, and corrosion on the steam dome that is very important to the operation of the loco.

its real name is a boiler tube end plate smoke box end and fire box tube end plate I know Steam locomotive inside out grew up with them
At Goole loco depot in the 1958 to 1966/7 end of British Steam era

they use different wording for the same parts so its the real name for them

When they mean service days do they mean only when the locomotive was operating with live steam?

45:11 Exhibit C this is why #3985 needs a rebuild see that bolt it is Style KH that is the wrong type of bolt for that locomotive. KH is used on coal burners that burn anthracite coal and those are replaced daily. UP locomotives and all ALCOs use Style KJ or Style KW which is threaded on one end has holes in both ends and is secured with a sleeve and a cap. Style KH is welded to the frame and it can become defective after years of use. That's why the industry does not use this style.

Like i said time to build new boilers these is a study now the steam locomotive can be more economical than a diesel with new technology and Bio-fuels so there can be a future yet for modern steam locomotives and there now new technology on steam locomotive construction for easy maintenance when are you going to restore 835

    • @gamerjamie1234
      @gamerjamie1234 Před 8 lety

a few million dollers with all the stuff they need to add eletronic controls for signals and that not to add the cost to ahve alot of the stuff casted since steam workshops with original stuff is rare and non working

wouldn't a power magnetic drill press work on a lot of them holes. like we use to drill holes in Truck frames??I don't know its just a thought. There about $900 New. .milwaukee tools make a lot of different kinds of them. But i think for most of them the has to be on a flat surface to stick on the steel to be able to drill without moving around. But there nice to use. and take minimal time to move from hole to hole. I didnt know if you Knew what they were or if they were used in the Railroad Industry. Here,s a like to one. If you never seen one or hear of one.
    www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/corded/4272-21
Anyway you guys are doing some amazing work. And cant believe how you people are not leaving any stone unturned. on the rebuild .
