पिछले कुछ सालों में मोबाइल इंटरनेट के व्यापक प्रसार के साथ भारत में स्मार्टफोन इस्तेमाल करने वालों की संख्या तेज़ी से बढ़ी है. इस बीच मुख्यधारा की मीडिया और ख़ासकर टीवी चैनलों की गिरती विश्वसनीयता के चलते बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने सूचना और मनोरंजन के लिए यूट्यूब का रुख़ किया है. एक अनुमान के मुताबिक़, भारत की लगभग चालीस प्रतिशत वयस्क आबादी यूट्यूब से जुड़ी हुई है और लगभग पचास करोड़ लोग किसी न किसी रूप में यूट्यूब का इस्तेमाल करते हैं, जो किसी भी अन्य देश से बहुत ज़्यादा है.
यूट्यूब के बढ़ते प्रसार-प्रभाव के बीच ऐसे बहुत सारे यूट्यूबर्स भी सामने आये हैं, जो राजनीतिक मुद्दों पर पब्लिक ऑपिनियन के नाम पर नफ़रती बयानों वाले प्लांटेड वॉक्स पॉप वीडियो बनाने लगे हैं. ऐसे वीडियोज़ में नियमित नज़र आने वाले अधिकतर बहसबाज़ अक्सर उन्हीं मुहावरों, तर्कों और रूपकों को दोहराते हैं जो भाजपा के नेता और प्रवक्ता पहले सेट कर चुके होते हैं. जो कहीं न कहीं भाजपा सरकार की हिन्दूवादी नीतियों को मज़बूत करते हैं. ये यूट्यूबर्स ऐसे वीडियोज़ और क्लिकबेट के लिए धार्मिक तौर पर भड़काऊ शब्दों वाले रंग-बिरंगे थंबनेल लगाकर अपने लाखों सब्सक्राइबर्स वाले चैनलों पर डालते रहते हैं, जिनके व्यूज़ करोड़ों में जाते हैं.
हालांकि, अब देश के कई राज्यों और भाषाओं में यह ट्रेंड शुरू हो गया है, लेकिन पिछले कुछ सालों में दिल्ली के जंतर-मंतर, कनॉट प्लेस, इंडिया गेट और चांदनी चौक जैसी व्यस्त सार्वजनिक जगहें ऐसे वीडियोज़ बनाने वाले यूट्यूबर्स और नियमित बहसबाज़ों का बड़ा अड्डा बन गया है. इंटरनेशनल सेंटर फॉर जर्नलिस्ट्स (आईसीएफ़जे) के ‘डिसआर्मिंग डिसइन्फ़ॉर्मेशन’ प्रोग्राम के तहत न्यूज़लॉन्ड्री की सहयोग से बनी यह वीडियो स्टोरी लोकतंत्र में सार्वजनिक बहस-मुबाहिसों को हाईजैक करने की कोशिश करने वाले दिल्ली के इस नफरती नेटवर्क की जांच-पड़ताल और भंडाफोड़ करती है.
