I haven't seen anyone else talk about it, so I gonna say it; the fact that they refer to it as the "replacement" level is proof enough that these big businesses don't see working-class people as people. They could have said something like "sustainable", but the wording makes it seems like people are just objects to be thrown out and replaced when they cannot work anymore due to old age, personal issues, etc.

    • @comradewindowsill4253
      @comradewindowsill4253 Před rokem

eh, replacement and sustainable actually would mean two different things in this context. replacement level just means that people are giving birth often enough that the next generation will have as many people in it as this one, 'replacing' their parents. this is common terminology in the study of any population, human or not.
whether or not that amount is 'sustainable', however, is an interesting question. ecologically speaking, our current population really isn't sustainable so long as it keeps consuming in the same way; I know little of economics, so I won't try to claim any authority on this matter, but climate change does have, and is having, an effect on economics, because the current economic philosophy is that of constant growth to maximize the profitability of the planet, to the exclusion of nearly all other considerations, including exhaustion of natural resources and longterm damage to our planet's habitability. unfortunately, one way or another, those things WILL become considerations for everyone, whether we like it or not.
but, well, that aside, you're kinda right: while the term 'replacement level' isn't fundamentally anti-human in itself, these articles full of their dire warnings about not reaching replacement level absolutely are. they like to scaremonger by conflating population shrinkage with an extinction spiral-- if they're still trying to look scientific, that is. this isn't really a credible threat: while, yes, a declining birth rate can lead to extinction under certain circumstances, we're much closer, currently, to going extinct by overpopulating until we've consumed all available resources and begin starving to death, than we are to dying out because of low birth rates.
of course, the real, ugly truth is, they're not afraid of our species going extinct; they're afraid of one of two things-- losing money, or immigrants. the first, because losing working population is going to mean, one, a workforce who can afford to be more choosy, because they're less replacable (heh), and two, shrinkage in consumers and producers, which all adds up to less profits. that being said, the thing that happens when a population is unable or unwilling to work certain jobs, is that a less choosy population starts fill those roles; immigrants. and then begins a whole nother narrative about 'replacement', but that's not worth getting into in an already long comment lol

It is so incredibly positive and sad at the same time. If I was an actor and the director wanted me to cry in a certain scene and I couldn't do it, I would tell them to play me this song. It's like an instant onion cutting effect. Basically the lyrics are like a memory flashback of your whole life, or what you would wish it to be. @aqwkingchampion13 Před rokem

So, this came out like a wall of text, and is only tangentially related due to the last point made, so I apologize for that. For context, this is in the central US.
I checked to see the ‘two bedroom rent on minimum wage’ for where I live, and there were only two options that showed up, so it’s a very small sample size. Minimum wage was calculated at 1160 with a 4 week month, 40 hr/wk, and no taxes.
One was $600, 2 bed 1 bath, technically on the ‘wrong side of the tracks’, but only 6 blocks (one block being crossing the tracks) away from a restaurant, a pharmacy, the library, the courthouse, a gas station, an atm, and the hospital. House itself didn’t look too shabby either.
The other was $1100, 3 bed 2 bath, in a fairly nice looking neighborhood, but towards the outskirts of town, down the highway from a few gas stations, and bit bit further than that you have some restaurants, the college campus (not a main campus, just a branch from a bigger university, not even as big as the high school here), a couple of banks and the movie theater. The closest of the things I mentioned being about 1 mile (20 blocks) from the house.
Of course the second house itself is better than the first one, but for ease of accessibility to anything useful, I feel that the much more reasonable $600 house would actually be the better choice, and with the minimum wage I outlined, not only would you be able to afford the house, but you would qualify for EBT/foodstamps, meaning that you have a (somewhat) decent place to live and something to eat.
Further, in my experience, taxes take about 13% of your raw income from your paychecks, meaning that you’d get about $1000 of your pay each month, completely removing the more expensive house from the options, but allowing you to still get the cheaper house while leaving you $400 for everything else, including any food the EBT doesn’t cover.
Where this may fall apart, however, is utilities, because they can be quite pricey, and the website I used doesn’t say whether they are included in the rent or not. If not, that takes about $200 out of your ‘wiggle room’ as I like to call it.

That said, location also matters because I live in what I like to call the biggest little town in the middle of nowhere. A livable wage may be more attainable here than other places (just the fact we have one location as opposed to the seeming more probable situation of having none) entirely because it’s the middle of nowhere.

For the debit/credit wrap-up thing, while I don't think they'd be able to give you times (since transactions don't go through immediately) they might be able to summarize the sources automatically. It might not be clear at first if the account has a weird name though, and it wouldn't be able to differentiate between locations, so that might just ruin the point of doing it in the first place.

14:30 can confirm, that's how it works in Germany too. If I did not take all of my vacation days, the staff department is required to send me a letter a few months in advance to remind me that I still have some. Unused vacation days will expire at the end of the year and they are obligated to make sure this doesn't happen because I didn't know better.

13:34 Robin - My boyfriend and I have known each other for the better part of our lives. 23 years this year, to be exact. We have a helluva story, like a lot of other people in this world. The short version is, we were high school sweethearts, stayed together for several years, got a place together after graduation, my narcissistic mother refusing me to see my father when we thought he was going to pass away because she didn't like my boyfriend because he wouldn't bow down to her narcissistic ways, causing him and I to break up because he didn't want to be the reason I couldn't say goodbye to my dad, got back together almost 3 years later (by this time, he'd had a kid who was 9 months old) and it wasn't the right time for either of us, so we broke up again. I met my kids' father 6 months later. We'd went on to spend 7 years apart while we went through our own journey's that we needed to go on. Then, he got a divorce about a year before I did... He and I went through really bad, abusive marriages. While the abuse was different between him and I, it's still abuse. Mine was physical, mental/emotional, verbal, and then financial when he became brave enough in the last 2 years, and for my BF, he dealt with verbal and mental/emotional. We found our way back to each other a year after that, and we've been together almost 6 years now. He's my rock, the only one that I trust with my life, and the only one that I have to count on. I lost my family within 2 years, I don't have friends that I can count on, it's just us. We've gone through hell and back together, going through a lot of adversary. Dealing with problematic homes since the landlords care only if they receive rent and not making sure that their home is actually habitable. Still today, we're dealing with bullshit. I found out that the apartment building I'm in was built in the 60's, and the water pipes are connected together instead of separately for each unit. The 3rd floor apartment could put grease down the sink and it's ME that will end up dealing with the clogged draining, causing water to rise up and flood my kitchen. I have videos and pictures of when that happened, causing me to lose access to over half of my cabinets now and losing many, many kitchen appliances and items (cookware, bakeware, etc.) that I'm STILL trying to get back. Well, we found out that the a/c unit's condensation drainage pipes are also connected... A blockage from, honestly who knows what, caused the 3rd floor down to the 1st floor (my apartment) to keep the pipe from draining correctly, resulting in a complete flooding of my apartment. I called the landlord and told him that this pipe was literally GUSHING water, and he said that "a/c's do that sometimes" and he would send the maintenance man over, who was on-site. It took him 40 minutes to respond. When he came in, his eyes went wide and he said it was the WORST he's EVER seen this happen. It flooded my apartment with so much water, I lost 80% of my items. My bed, clothes, electronics, things that were my family's that I'll NEVER get back because they've passed away, and much more. My bedroom closet shares the wall that is where the a/c/ unit is. We've been trying to clean up the water out of the carpets since Wednesday, and it's almost Sunday. It was so bad, half of my bedroom is still water-logged carpet - and it keeps spreading because we just can't seem to get it all up. This is just the most recent thing that's happened. We had a previous apartment that was a big, beautiful 3-bedroom home. For an apartment, it was huge. We were paying so much money for this place... then we couldn't use most of it. Rain would pour into my son's room, so we had to move him. Then, our girls' closet started having water pour into it because there was a leak coming from the upstairs apartment. Our girls lost so much because we had no idea until it happened. Then, we found out the real history of the place, the property management company, and what actually transpired to get where we were. We talked to the previous tenant when he came to pick up a package that had been delivered there instead of his new place. That still wasn't even the worst thing, imo, that we went through. We had to completely pack up what we could put into a single vehicle, and move to another state because of a terrible, terrible situation with our home. Throughout everything, we've stood together, held each other up, and kept going. I have a disability, and throughout that journey, he has stood beside me. In fact, there are times when I need his help to get to the bathroom, get dressed, etc. He's never once judged me, made me feel bad (we're 35 years old, and what's happening to me shouldn't be happening until I'm more like 60-70 years old). I love this man with all my heart, he's amazing. BUT, we CAN'T get married. I'll lose all of my benefits for myself and my children, insurance that is desperately needed, EBT, etc. He works his ass off day in and day out, making pretty good money, but we STILL can't afford everything on his salary. So, we HAVE to do what we have to do in order to make it. A lot of these videos speak so many truths for so many people. Our kids (we're a blended family, but we don't use the word step. We're just family) have asked us many, many times when we're going to get married. They're all for it! My two love their step-dad so much, and both have said so many times they wish that he was their father instead of what they got. Now that they're older, they understand that just because we aren't married, that doesn't mean we aren't a family and that our love isn't real. Their father and stepmother told them that because we weren't married, that means that he isn't family to them and that his love for my kids isn't real. They see what a real relationship is supposed to be like. Mommy isn't crying every night, and daddy isn't yelling/screaming, hitting, etc. That's what matters. We aren't unlike other people. Our story is similar to so many others. The details, the specifics, are different...but it's the same when it comes to making it, living life and trying to figure out how to survive. When a man goes to work every day - gone from the home for 12, 13, or even 14 hours - still isn't making enough to pay rent AND pay for food, clothing, etc., - that's the same. Way too many people are struggling because of how our world is. But is it going to change? Probably not. Will he and I ever get married? Probably not. That one little piece of paper, something that doesn't define our love, is what will be the thing that changes everything when we get older. What if something happened to me, and he isn't my husband, so who is next to be able to make that call, the decision, on my life? Legally, he won't be able to. Even though he's the one whose been there all those years. Life shouldn't have to be like that.

Maybe this won't mean much coming from a stranger on the internet, but having read your story I really wanted to tell you that you are an amazing person. I think our backgrounds probably are Immensely different, but I can understand and relate so much to your experiences. I grew up poor (still am too) so I know how it's to live struggling and worrying about a lot of stuff. I'd love to say "money doesn't matter!" or things like that, but the constant stress trying to survive shouldn't be underminded.
However I do think that, even struggling, a loving and supporting family will always be the best your kids can have. And I think you're an amazing parent to do that.
I will be wishing for the best to you and your family

bill gates has donated a lot for charity, however in his early years he was ultra monopolistic, there was a lawsuit over internet explorer, that's why it's now edge, and when windows used to run on top of DOS he ordered for windows to purposely give a meaningless error when attempting to run on anything other than MS-DOS. I wonder if the donations are to divert attention from his more current monopolistic affairs, like productivity software, or making it increasingly more tedious to to swap your default browser by separating every single option where possible in windows 11.

One of the things that really pisses me off is the people who pretend that rich people and poor people both have problems as if their problems are remotely comparable. As if being indecisive or not getting exactly what you wanted is anywhere near the same thing as struggling to get by while drowning in debt from a system that is designed to make you suffer for not being rich.
