  • The God Machine, from San Diego USA. Perform - Home - at the Astoria Theatre London, no audience present for this recording. B/cast on The Beat, May 8th 1993. Recorded by me using Nicam Hifi VHS VCR, tape used is Fuji SHG E180, recording at SP. Tape archive number 647
The God Machine was an alternative rock band, active in the first half of the 1990s. Its members were all from San Diego, California, but they all lived and performed mainly in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
The band consisted of three members, Robin Proper-Sheppard (guitar/vocals), Jimmy Fernandez (bass) and Ronald Austin aka Austin Lynn Austin (drums), and they first performed officially under the name The God Machine in 1991. They released an EP, Purity with the Eve record label, and were later given a recording contract with Fiction Records. They released two albums in their career, both with their trademark dark and industrial-sounding alternative rock, before Fernandez suddenly died from brain hemorrhage. Their single release of "Home", peaked at No. 65 in the UK Singles Chart in January 1993. Proper-Sheppard went on to form The Flower Shop Recordings label, and bands Sophia and The May Queens. In 2020, after nearly 3 decades, Austin formed and launched his own music project, Mercylane.

Strings snapping and fingers bleeding, they were mind blowing to watch and still today one of few bands I love to crank up to 11 for the neighbours when they piss me off!!

Excellent. I saw them live at the Jericho Tavern, Oxford back in the day and they were incredible. They were supported by Bivouac who were awesome also. Good times, the best times.

Thank you so much for posting this live version ! those videos are so rare !! I saw them twice in Switzerland (Dec 1992 and July 1993). They were such a great band. So ahead of their time. So much power, rage and then sadness in this music. I have been a hardcore fan since the beginning. I have everything from the Purity EP to the 2nd LP "one last laugh in a place of dying". If you ever find another live recording, I'll be mostly happy to watch and listen to it !

I was at this recording which took place at the Astoria in London. My wife was the booker and I would tag along and check out the bands. Everything was backing track except the vocals. These boys stood out not only because they had a unique sound and but also they were such a great lads. This sounds superb, just as I remember it.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to give us some background to the performances on The Beat. Do you know why they did that with all the bands, backing track and live vocals?

They only had a limited amount of time at the venue so I’m guessing it was down to that. But for me it worked! My wife became friends with some of the band members who performed - including Alex from Blur who she is still in touch with. She has a ton of photos mostly instamatic in her Dad’s loft back in England (we now live in the US) and some video. Need to drag it all out for world to see at some point.

@@deletebilderberg I hope you manage to get that video out and uploaded to CZcams before the tapes disintegrate. If you don't have the equipment to do it, you can send them to me and I'll upload with full credit to you.

You might want to change that to "my wife was the booking agent" or "my wife was in charge of booking" or "my wife booked the acts".

So weird.. can’t figure this out. The music sounds like it’s the studio tracks but it’s obviously a live vocal.. ? Bizarre .. but still awesome. Loved this band since the 90’s and this album is a masterpiece...
