    as a american rugby fan who's new to the game these videos really are great at explaining the intracicies of the breakdown and rugby in general. before this it just looked like a pile of dudes and random penalties...

      +Paul Buono indeed...as an Irish rugby fan (and former college player) the breakdown is one of the most technical aspects of the game...games are won and lost at the breakdown...not just the scrum!

    • @poiu77
      @poiu77 Před 8 lety +1

      +Paul Buono do you prefer it to NFL?

    • @paulbuono5088
      @paulbuono5088 Před 8 lety +10

      +poiu77 Well what I prefer doesn't matter but I'll tell you that they're both actually quite different. NFL is almost played more like chess while Rugby is like soccer/basketball where it's free flowing and each player has to play both sides of the field (no separate offensive/defensive/special teams). And rugby is more traditional while NFL has been americanized for entertainment value (time outs/2minute warnings/kneeling the ball & running out of bounds) and exciting endings. So in a sense NFL is more impressive because you have each player with a very specialized role which allows for more spectacular plays (which is what americans want), but rugby, which has also gone rule/point changes, is more pure and maybe even grittier.

      Funny as a Kiwi the thing about that game that i remember most wasn't the terrible tackle on Brian or Danny Grewcock being suspended for biting Mealamu, but how the Lions played so poorly.

    • @vonteflon
      @vonteflon Před 9 lety +5

      A note here says you've edited this comment, yet it's still wrong... If he had hands on the ground he'd be "off his feet", but as the first defender at the breakdown as long he's trying to rip the ball he's fine.

    • @CalYumMarra
      @CalYumMarra Před 9 lety +3

      He said he was using the downed player as leverage while attacking the ball which is perfectly ok. Usually players will only get penalised if they have a knee on the ground or are obviously using the player to support their weight, which Brian is not doing, he is simply angling his lower leg in such a way that he has a stronger position in the ruck.

    • @leighfrench7380
      @leighfrench7380 Před 9 lety +1

      Neocarty is correct. I am a 7 and also a referee, I do both every weekend.
      If you use a player, the ball or the floor to support you weight you are "off your feet", as referees we have been told to interpret it in the following way:
      "Imagine, if the player/ball was taken away would the defending player fall forward on to his hands?"
      if the answer is yes then 'off the feet' is the decision that can be made. If we all ask ourselves the question I have outlined we might all have different answers and that's why the laws are 'interpreted'.
      Also Law 16.3 (e) says the head/shoulders should not be below the hips. FREE KICK (Which BOD did here by tucking the head) ............ but this very, very rarely gets given although its a safety issue. (I'm sure I miss a lot of these, but we are also trying to balance fairness and letting the game flow at club level.
      Now as a 7, we all do what BOD has done here and see if we can get away with it. If the ref allows you to you carry on doing it for the rest of the game.
      At the end of the day he was quite a good player so we will let him do what he wants ;)

    • @vonteflon
      @vonteflon Před 9 lety +2

      Leigh French, I like the tone of your message and appreciate your combined ref/openside experience. But I have to take issue with this bit:
      " "Imagine, if the player/ball was taken away would the defending player fall forward on to his hands?"
      if the answer is yes then 'off the feet' is the decision that can be made. "
      But BOD goes out of his way to illustrate here that he is ripping the ball upwards, showing the ref a clear intention to grab the ball and *not* just lean on it. If he's yanking the ball upwards then no, he clearly is supporting his own weight and certainly wouldn't fall over if the ball were not there.
      I understand that the refs' decisions will always be open to subjective interpretation, but this particular point is factual physics.
