  • "September in the Rain" is a popular song about nostalgia by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, published in 1937. The song was introduced by James Melton in the film Melody for Two. It has become a standard, having been recorded by many artists since.
    In January 1st 1962, the Beatles recorded a rock and roll interpretation during their Decca audition. The Beatles - and Paul McCartney in particular - were familiar with show tunes and soundtrack songs, and often incorporated beat versions into their early repertoire.
    Here I´ve intended to show a possible rendition with the same gear they used to play in 1961/62.
    - Rickenbacker 325 Capri (John)
    - Hofner 500/1 61 bass (Paul)
    - Gretsch 6128 Duojet (George)

    Hey, love your channel man, been subscribed for awhile. I have a few of the guitars you have, Hamburg-period big for me. This song is one of my favorite covers of their pre-fame days. Having trouble working out some of these chords though, I think I've got a few of them, but it's difficult because looking at the screen obviously looking from front, you have to turn it round a bit. Any chance you could break down the chords on this? Finger positions?

    nice key change in the middle. A question I've had about their learning/playing these fairly complex songs they covered: they likely didn't have sheet music to go off of, so they picked these up by ear? Easy to do with 3-4 chord songs, but a song like this has changes that have to be discerned and figured out. Comments?

      Yesterday, I sat down and watched this video for 3 hours straight at various speeds: 75%, 50%, and even 25% and I finally got all the chords and guitar licks down. It's a tricky song. I always get perturbed when folks write-off the early Beatles as fluff music.

  • @ManWithNoExpression
    @ManWithNoExpression Před 4 lety +5

    Awesome, I've been hoping you'd do this one for a while! I wonder which version of the song they learned it from. I always imagined it was the Dinah Washington version for some reason, but I guess Frank Sinatra also had a version around that time.
    There's not many songs where George would have used that major 6th chord shape that you do on the D6, so it's interesting to see it here. Also nice to see Paul's impromptu bass ending on your cover. Great job!

    • @johnnhoj6749
      @johnnhoj6749 Před 4 lety +3

      I think this emphasizes how crucial to the Beatles sound was their openness to earlier musical forms. Without their, particularly McCartney's, appreciation of the likes of show tunes, jazz, crooners, classical music etc then their range when it came to writing their own songs would have been far narrower. Many other artists never went wider than simple rock and roll 3 or 4 chord tunes and many that did range further afield did so under the second-hand influence of The Beatles.

    Magnificent!! George is on another level altogether. John seems to be just playing a second bass line -- but why would he have to detune his whole guitar for that? Also, I never noticed the missing beat near the end of this song before. It seems to be present in some recordings, but not all: czcams.com/video/0UUMAvddl2E/video.html. So I guess it was just a defect introduced by a bootleg of a bootleg of the actual Decca tapes.

    James gulieio well darling: well darling is a song recorded in 1960 with Stu stuclife (bass), John Lennon (Rythm), Paul McCartney (lead). It's in a blues tune, which is High E string to D, B string to A, G string to F, D string to C, A string to G, and Low E string to D, then once in that tune the chords and order is this, E7 to A7 back to E7 then B7 then A7 and back to E7 (E7, A7,E7,B7,A7,E7) the solo goes (number means fret and letter means string) 2D 0G 2G B1G2/B3G4 (/ means slide) 0G 2D and repeat now there are some parts I haven't learned yet but I'm talking to my guitar teacher for help, it's also in a E minor pentatonic scale, oh and the start of it (well darling) is 2D 0G 2G/4G, 3B, 4E (high E) and then you slide that shape down each fret from that

It would be interesting to see how you would perform Falling in Love Again, for me this is not the easiest song in their repertoire. P.S And by the way, it’s funny that George plays a part that looks more like jazz.
