Your tips are good. As a retired high school teacher of 30 years, I've seen more than my share of English teacher burnouts due to the burdens of grading assignments. Though my focus was mainly Social Science, I had already used a few of your ideas in slightly different ways. Will direct some of my old student teachers here as well as other teaching peeps...

Amen Laura! With my kids, sometimes I grade 'the attempt' or 'the improvement' over 'the accuracy'. And I already know it's a lost cause with the reading at night. So instead of intense bellringers, we play Kahoot! as an informal assessment and be done with it. Enough already

I’ve been a science teach for 25 yrs and I had to make some adjust to get my family life back
1- select what you will grade
2- test all concepts but do not grade all these concepts
3- 5 min quiz with one word answers thst student could grade by exchanging papers
4- label diagrams should the parts of hearts or lung
5- collect more grades than is needed
6- when I test a concept and too many kids fail I curve the grades mainly on end of the year exam

I've shortened the quizzer grading down even further. I simply walk down the aisles, collecting their slips (I cut paper into fourths), turning them up or down in my hand based on correct or incorrect. They watch the direction of their paper and know in two minutes if they've gotten their points. Easy!

But want a student want to know Then why they missed it? Cause some drama?
I use similar grading hacks in my science classes. For my reading assignments I give 3 question quizzes (3Qsquared) and they need to get 2 right for 100%. If they get all 3 right they get a bonus point. Super quick to grade and it keeps them honest about the reading. Unless its a lab, most of my homework is graded for completion, not accuracy. I tell my students that its ok to get questions wrong on the homework as long as you attempt them. I agree that it is not possible to grade everything, but choosing different student work intermittently keeps them on their toes because they never know what could be graded. ;)

Love this video and your hacks! You are my go-to TPT guru for all things American Lit. I tried your one-question quizzers for Of Mice and Men and my students loved them just as much as I did - so easy to grade! I love the Crazy Essay Week idea - so good to help kids practice, but also give them a chance to do some editing/revising and not kill me. You're amazing. Keep the tips coming!

Nicole Frohnapfel Thanks, Nicole. Yes, I try hard to quickly get to the point but do still catch myself rambling sometimes. Those videos that make us sit through 10 minutes of fluff to get to 30 seconds of useful content drive me nuts. If I ever start showing you what I ate for breakfast or talking about my trip to the dentist, please slap me.
One question quizzers have changed my life! My kids almost think of them as a game. I make three different versions: easy, medium, and hard, so they sometimes get away easy and sometimes not.
My kids get surprisingly excited about quizzers, too, booked4theweek! It's such a small thing but makes some of them so happy. Glad these are working for ya! :)

As a student a some teachers grade homework on accuracy. I have a teacher who asks for about 6-7 assignments which we have to turn in a week but she doesn’t update grades for 3-4 weeks and on the last sunday she grades for 10 hours so she can get everything done. I believe there is time and place on grading homework assignment on accuracy but having us students trade papers with a partner and grade that way or grade 2 problems out of 5 is a good way to grade on accuracy

I used to read on websites on the internet when I was a kid to see how teachers think when grading so I could improve my grades as a student. It worked. Just wanted to experience that again.

Matthew Ryan Ross Glad you’re here with me! For speeches, I still use a rubric and score as the kids present. By the end of each class period, the kids who presented that day get my feedback and comments. The power lies in a good rubric, for sure.

This is my 15th year and I understand burnout. This past year I gained 90 dual credit students for a total of 150 advanced kiddos. All of my classes are writing intensive. I loveeee my classes, but spending my Saturdays grading essay after essay honestly just made me pretty bitter, especially when I'm paid the same as someone who clocks out at 3:25 M-F. Before school starts this year, I want to incorporate even more hacks and reclaim my weekends!

Have you worked with Standards Based Grading? And block schedules? Any tips if you have would be welcomed.
Happily (I'm guessing), Sarah, I haven't yet had to wrangle with Standards Based Grading, so I don't have much advice there. Block scheduling, though, has been an interesting and most good adjustment as I moved from teaching in Calif. to Idaho. I'm a math teacher, I grade most homework on completion and simply discuss the most common errors in class. Math homework should be about practice and assessments on how well they have learned it

Do you give completion credit for the 2 essays (in crazy essay week) that you don't grade? My kids would say "so I did it for nothing?" Then, I feel frustrated that they don't understand the concept of practice and also like a bad teacher because I am not grading it.
Stacey Edzwald Yup, Stacey, you've got it. They all get the daily writing completion points for giving a good-faith effort on the Mon. through Wed. first-round drafts. Without that, my kids would definitely ease off the gas, too.
I am thinking about Crazy Essay week. Are they text-based essays or do you just give them a prompt?
Career-changing new teacher, here, with a question for anyone who may have a good answer. I agree that teachers can't and shouldn't grade everything. But what do you do with student work that doesn't get graded? Do you just toss it? Do you give it a point value for participation and return it? Do you do a little bit of both? And finally, do you ever have students approach you and say, for example, "you never returned XYZ assignment" and if so, how do you handle that?
I know the above is a loaded question but any feedback anyone could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Brandon Zurvalec Great questions, Brandon, and welcome to this side of the teacher’s desk. I do a little bit of both. In 20 years of teaching, no student has ever asked for a paper like that, but if it did happen I would probably tell that student that the assignments were sub-par overall as a class and I decided not to include them in the grade book because it was clear to me that I needed to re-teach that skill set. Again, this hasn’t ever happened, but it is good to have a plan. Again, welcome! So glad you found me.

The Quizzer sounds awesome, but how would you deal with the chronically late or absent student. They're likely to get the answer from other students via text.
Hey, LeNard, great question! This is so easy to navigate. I just give those kids who need a make-up quizzer a different question altogether. Once you get used to the routine, it's easy to find four or five questions per chapter to use as potential quizzers. I'd never ask the same question to that late kid - this teacher wasn't born yesterday! ;)
I wish I could change our assessments!! On a team we do everything lock and step- but I teach geography.

Um Ibrahim Hi there! A rubric is a pre-determined scoring sheet that helps make the grading criteria clear for both the student and instructor. If you enter “rubric” into Google, I’m sure you’ll find lots of options. Happy hunting!

What is an SSR?
Great question, Kristin! SSR stands for Sustained Silent Reading. It's a strategy to help students build text stamina and, hopefully, a lifelong love of reading as a source of entertainment and information.
