How I've Equipped My Old Town Trip 10 DLX Kayak

  • A brief video showing how I've used the accessories from my previous videos (and some new ones) and some of the things you should bring along with you to make your trip better. Again, these videos are geared towards beginners, like me, to give you ideas how you may want to to customize your kayak for your own comfort and ease of use. If I've somehow inspired you to take the plunge, I want to say PLEASE be careful! It's a kayak but it's also a boat and you should treat it as such. My best advice is to WEAR A LIFE JACKET and familiarize yourself with your kayak in small lakes or ponds before moving on to larger lakes or salt water. If you're not sure, rent a kayak on a smaller lake first to see if it's for you. Be safe and have fun!
    A special THANKS to my adorable wife Laura for providing me with the intro for this video!

      @@BenFourman hope to see more videos in the future! I have a friend who wants to sell me the same kayak. I’ve never been fishing on one and looking to get one. He wants $400 for it so figure it’s cheaper Then spending $1500 on one just to see if I like it. I definitely like all the upgrades on yours and I’m the type of guy that would be doing the same thing upgrading it

    I found this video very helpful. Just got my Old Town Trip 10 and now have a long shopping list of accessories. As a woman, the pee cup needs some modifications. You guys have it so easy. Thank you for putting the video)s) together!

      +Christine Powers +Christine Powers THANKS for watching Christine! Sorry I took so long to respond. For some reason I'm not getting comment notifications like I should. I have a bunch of videos I've done that are 90% finished but I've had some things come up lately so I've been slow to get them up but I hope to do another accessories video highlighting the ones I find real useful and the ones that I find unnecessary. LOL on your pee cup woes. Almost makes me feel guilty. Have fun with your Trip 10 and be safe!

    That pee cup is definitely one of the most useful things lol. On long kayak trips I've had to poor out perfectly good water just to have a bottle to go in :( Those attachments are great, I'm gonna start adding some leashes for my stuff too here pretty soon.

    Guys...One comment...I know I went pretty fast with the video and descriptions here because sometimes people get bored with long videos. If there's something you keep missing that you're curious about, pause the video at the point you need to to get a good look. I do it all the time. If that doesn't help, ask me. • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 6 lety

      THANKS Joshua, and THANKS for watching and commenting. You may get a really small one in those spaces. It depends on what you're putting in them. You won't be able to fit one to put fish in but if you're just bringing a small one to carry a couple sandwiches and snacks it might fit. The rear hatch is a little tough to reach if you have short arms like me. This is an old video and I have since bought a Vibe Sea Ghost 130 sit on top and this has plenty of space that is much easier to access. It's bigger and heavier so it doesn't turn like the Old Town but it was a trade off I was willing to make. I love both kayaks BTW.

    Great videos Ben! how did you set up your scotty rod holder? I am in the process of buying one, but I wasn't sure where to place it as the side didn't seem like a good area to put it on. I was thinking of putting it on the deck. I haven't done much to my kayak as it is my first and don't wanna put a lot of holes on it yet.

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 4 lety

      It's adjustable and pretty good for a kayak. One caveat though is if you plan on fishing for more than a couple hours your butt and back will be killing you. I fixed that by buying one of those gel seat cushions. I got mine at Costco (not sure if they still have them). I was able to go 4 and 5 hours with minimal discomfort. Good luck and THANKS for watching!!

  • @littlebitofeverything652

    im trying to figure out how did you mount your scotty rod holder because im trying to figure out where i want mine and 3 slots in the front are to small for the holder base...

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 8 lety

      I put a Scotty rail behind me on the edge of the lip perpendicular to the seat back. I put the gear head in it and snap the rod holder in. The way it sits it's a little tough to get the rod out of the holder sometimes but it works for now. If I can figure out a way to get you a pic of it I will.

      Ben's Reel World Fishing I actually did a little looking around and it seems as if the dry hatch cover in the back is supposed to have a flap on it to keep it bolted to the kayak. I guess the Dicks I bought it from cut the flap off the hatch cover, perhaps it was broken or something. I think I prefer it this way, it's just a crappy thing to do on their part but whatever.

    • @BenFourman

      just thought i'd let you know... I asked Old Town Customer Service the same thing, when they got back to me I told them the same thing I told you. I also asked if mine was supposed to come with an anchor, cause Dick's Sporting Goods told me it wasn't. Without them even asking if I wanted it, they sent me a NEW hatch cover and a NEW anchor kit! They didn't ask for a picture, they didn't ask for proof of purchase, NO QUESTIONS ASKED! HUGE props to Old Town

  • @littlebitofeverything652

    so what is the difference between old town vapor 10 and old town trip deluxe 10 is it just the back hatch that is seal tight on deluxe and on vapor its not is that all ??

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 8 lety

      +Nemanja serbian_channel THANKS for watching and for the question!!! From what I can tell it looks like the only difference is, like you said, the Trip 10 has the locking storage. The locking storage is great to have because you can keep some light stuff in the back of the kayak and secure it inside while you're transporting the kayak on a roof or trailer. You can also store more in the back while kayaking and keep it pretty dry. People (and myself) have had issues with the seals but I don't put anything back there that I don't want to get wet anyway. The downside is it's tough (for me anyway) to get the lid unlocked while you're kayaking, if you haven't unlocked it before casting off, and the well is deeper so it's tougher to get heavier stuff like tackle from the back while you're on the water. Also, if you leave the lid open on a windy day it acts like a sail and may affect your tracking. It is easy to remove and that solves that problem. If I had to do my purchase over again, it's still tough to say if I'd prefer one over the other based on my experience with the Trip 10. I think either would be a great purchase.

      I have the trip 10 with locking storage. It does not last. I have had it for less than a month and that rubber piece that holds it when you open has already gotten torn.

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 8 lety

      +Mika Rla'Yang I've had mine over a year and it's still fine. Did you store it in the sun? I took mine off for a month or so when I knew I would be leaving it open most of the time. One problem I did have is the seal between that compartment and the main "cabin" has been broken twice, probably from storing the anchor back there and flipping the yak on the roof.

      THANKS for watching and commenting Creek!!! I use a Driftsun Auto Inflate now that I got from Amazon. The one I was wearing at the time I shot this video was a fishing vest I bought at Dick's Sporting Goods. I'm not sure of the manufacturer. I'll have to take a look at it and reply to my own post for you. It's a great vest but I wanted something less restrictive while in the kayak.

    Im 320lbs any ideas if I will have issues?

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 8 lety

      +KYfishguy THANKS for watching and commenting! To answer your question...that depends. Each kayak has a weight limit which is usually stated somewhere in the materials they give you with it and on the kayak itself. The Old Town Trip 10 I use has a maximum range of 275-325 lbs. The Sun Dolphin I sent back had a 250 lb max weight limit. This includes your weight and anything you're going to bring onboard with you. It could also depend if you are short and very overweight (like me) or just tall and big. If you're not real tall, your center of gravity will be lower so it won't effect the stability much but it will make it difficult (but not impossible) to get in and out of your kayak. If you're taller and more agile, you may want to consider a more stable kayak where your center of gravity isn't really a factor. Along with this, it will also be easier to get in and out of. Also consider what PFD (or life jacket) is best for you. Take into consideration what health limitations or needs you may have, if any. All this being said, I am 56 (I'll be 57 in a couple weeks) years old and around 5'7" tall and weigh around 215 pounds. I'm about 50-60 pounds overweight and I manage OK so I don't want to discourage you. You really need to do some research and see which kayak is best for you. Watch more CZcams videos, especially those on safety and getting in and out of your kayak, and get as much information as you can from the people you are considering buying your kayak from. The good news is somewhere out there there is a kayak for you. Good luck!!!

    Pee cup? My buddy uses a piss sponge. I told him he is the most disgusting person I've met. Do have a good time making fun of him tho. Use rivots instead of screws. Less cuts.

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 6 lety

      THANKS for watching and commenting!!! Piss sponge LOL. Glad I never thought of that one. I've seen the rivet suggestion and I appreciate it. The one advantage to using screws is if you mount something and over time it seems useless or better served in a different location, you have to rip the rivet out of the kayak. No? I guess the solution to that is to start with a screw and if you like it where it is, replace the screws with rivets. I use the shortest screw I can get away with and, if I'm using a longer screw, it's going somewhere where my skin isn't LOL. But I WILL take your suggestion under advisement and replace my screws with rivets. A lot of my screws are rusting anyway and in need of replacement. THANKS again!!!

    • @BenFourman
      @BenFourman  Před 9 lety

      Hope I didn't sound snippy. THANK you so much for the comments. I just bought a bait caster a couple weeks ago for the first time and am still learning it. Always used spinning reels and my wife's push button (because sometimes I just don't feel like putting on another bait when I lose one). I've taken the bait caster out 3 times and spent more time fixing tangles than fishing but I think I'm getting there. The two guys I yak fish with are the experts in the fishing department. I'm still learning. Spending 4 days in the Adirondacks yak fishing starting this weekend (video forthcoming...and I'll try a different intro LOL) so this will be the big test for me and a bait caster. THANKS again for explaining your dislike, watching my videos, and your comments and questions! BTW my friends started a new channel and it's Macho Yak TV.
