RIP Melanie 💔 I grew up up listening that song.
My mum used to try to hit the high notes in jest and we’d all laugh when it came on the radio. So much fun .
Condolences to her family, friends and all the fans. The music lives on.
RIP Melanie 🎼🎸❤️💔😪
Astonishingly I can STILL hit the high notes ha ha ha. Loved this song.
Did you ever see the animation they made for it? I think it was on a variety show. Sony and share or Carol Burnett or something.
I can’t believe this is how I’ve learned of her passing RIP Melanie!
RIP Melanie. Haven’t heard this song in decades but knew the lyrics automatically.
RIP Melanie! One of only 3 women to solo perform at Woodstock '69
Melanie and Joan Baez but I don't consider Janis Joplin a solo singer, she had a backing band during her set. So did Grace Slick etc.
@@eightinches3671She was definitely a solo singer, but maybe not a solo artist. It’s of no real consequence though, her backing band was just there to provide the music over which she sang. It wasn’t even BBHC, so for all intents and purposes I think we can count her along the solo female singers.
@@allbottledup9513Which band was with Janis at Woodstock? Full Tilt Boogie Band?
RIP
Thanks for sparking up my transistor radio Christmas morning 1971.
I even got new skates that Christmas!
A magical memory forever vivified by your song.
❤❤❤
RIP Melanie 🫂🤍
She’s been a family friend of ours, wonderful woman with wonderful talent.
The angels just gained a great member to the choir🕊️
I’m actually named after her. My mom adored Candles in the Rain. Just found out she passed away. Maybe she’d honor me with being a new guide. ❤️
My heart hurts today learning of Melanie passing away. Such a huge loss in the world.
RIP Melanie
my aunt always loved this song. She’d always play it in the car and sing along to it in the most joyful, silly way. She died a few days ago, and this song just makes me feel so much safer. It’s crazy how much a song can cheer you up.
Sorry for your loss, your aunts probably singing and listening to the song with you from heaven
This song just immediately makes me feel alright
Hello Its me My kid sister said it took her 1 full year to learn Irish Dance. She did get to dance in ST. Pats Parade.
R.I.P. Melanie! You're the best singer and songwriter, you sang "Brand New Key", " People In The Front Row", "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", etc. Hopefully you sang Brand New Key in heaven. Rest in peace Melanie!
I name my daughter after her when I her singing Brand New Key in 1971 been a fan ever since then
@@martiemutsch7461 January 23rd of 2024 since she passed away. 😔
RIP. Another of the classic generation of rock is gone.
Rest In Heavenly Peace Melanie . This news is particularly sad for me & probably many other poeple. You were a joyous part of my childhood that made life really happy . A song my mother sang with us as children .
It’s a sad day but your music lives on.
✌🏼🎼🎸😪💔
When this was on Kids in the Hall recently I honestly thought this was a parody song for the sketch, and nope. A very real song that was a hit in a decade that predates me being alive. And it's actually pretty catchy.
Melanie was a great artist - have a listen to this in case you are interested: czcams.com/video/IZ52lk9wjZI/video.html it's called Candles in the Rain and it's her tribute to Woodstock. I absolutely loved the Kids in the Hall sketch since I was so familiar with her music.
RIP Melanie. You will be missed.
RIP Melanie. My older sister has your albums, and we all listened non-stops. One of my favorite songs from an amazing artist.
My parents named me Melanie, all because they loved this song and how happy it made them.
I grew up to be a roller derby player so the song kind of fits.
That's a good reason to name you Melanie!
I had a colleague years whose parents named her Connie because they liked Connie Francis.
At least Connie and Melanie are sensible names.
Hi Melanie I too named my darling daughter Melanie after her she is 47 now & still to this day I dance round the kitchen to the album x beautiful name 🌸
One of my second cousins was a Roller Derby skater... Used to love watching this on Saturday nights!!
The music is a masterpiece
The piano is perfect
The background vocals are incredible
The maracas and bongos just hit the spot
And her singing is the best part about it
I found this to be a surprisingly difficult song to perform well, but everyone loves it. We did a cover of this & I had to modify the last part since her vocal range is higher than mine (or at least, higher than what I can sing well in a live setting)
"Some people say I done all right for a girl", yes Melanie, you did. And with that line, you inspired more women musicians than you knew to rock harder, write more. Thanks Sister Muse.
She had a hell of a voice. The way she could belt out the lyrics in Lay Down still amazes me
Hay, I was gonna say that too, true classic words "done alright for a girl" it says so much of the irony of life.
My sincere condolences to Melanie's family and those close to her. I'm 83 and always enjoyed her music. My husband met her when she traveled through VT several years ago.
Watching Kids in the Hall, and I honestly hadn't ever heard this song before....Looked it up to see if it was legit and now it's stuck in my head 😆
@@apples_281 I did too lol! It sounds like something that would be playing in the background of the game Fallout.
I don’t know what this “kids in the hall” is I just know it from my dad playing it all the time when I was young
A simplistic song with an upbeat tune. Melanie RIP.
so sad I was hoping I didn't know this song cause I saw she passed but I know it of course. :( Pretty name btw Ruby. Lifes so short.
I remember my mom playing this in the very early 80’s (80-81) when. I was a very little boy. Brings back a whole lot of memories
My dad passed a couple years ago, and this was his favorite song. When I'm drunk, I come here and listen and cry. He wasn't the best dad in the world but he suffered from addiction. I blew him off the last couple of years he was alive and ignored his calls and what not. I'd do anything to go back and talk to him more. I miss him so much. So much.
YOU CAN STILL LISTEN TO A FAMILY MEMBER,A FRIEND OR A NEIGHBOR. TO MAKE IT UP..
Sorry for your pain. I did the same thing with my father: told him I hated him when he was dying. I meant it for the way he treated my mother, but I also love him very much.
Did you make your dad an addict? No, of course not: he made his choices and choices have consequences. That is what life is about. You couldn’t have changed him and his behaviors would have affected you had you not made the choice to move forward with your own life. As a parent, I can tell you I would never hold a grudge against my son for something like what happened with you. Don’t cry...sing along LOUDLY and remember what good memories of your dad you have. 🤗
My mom died yesterday, her name was Melanie, and she loved this song. Rest In Peace. 1970-2021
So sorry for your loss....my condolences to you and your family...Rest in peace Melanie
My SINCEREST prayers and condolences. Haven't heard this in years but I remember when it came out! Please remember all the good times with your mom and the more you think about her the easier it will eventually become but it takes time! So sorry for your loss.
So sorry! She was younger than me! Please think of waht Melanie says in her song "The Saddest Thing": "I'll just say thank you life for having been."
I'm sorry for your loss. It becomes easier to cope with as time goes on, but it doesn't mean that she means anything less to you or you to her.
She should have been a much bigger star. But with only three very well known songs, she left a serious legacy. The voice and talent will live on forever. We will miss you Melanie!
She was a pretty big star in her time. She was forgotten, though, because in those days all popular music had to be 'serious', and she had a playful streak, even in sad songs like 'Look What They've Done to my Song.'
RIP Melanie. Gone too soon. I've always loved this song.
Dave Foley is a comedy genius.
That Shakespeare sketch was some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. 🤣🤣🤘🤘
Was this a Kids in the Hall sketch? I've been googling, haven't found it yet
This song fits perfect for a compilation of people getting hurt
@@buttermilkoreos8913 i already thought you know it, but i wanted to make sure...
@@janbellemann5691 It's alright, lmao I'm just glad somebody knew what I was referencing
R.I.P Melanie. My dad and I love your song Lay Down (Candles in The Rain). We'll miss you, Melanie.
RIP to someone who filled so many peoples lives with beautiful music and an even more beautiful soul
I'd like to thank Kids in the Hall for making sure that the chorus would be on loop in my head until 3am. 🤣🤣
Dave Foley did a 4th Wall magick ritual to curse literally all of us
The only cure is to inflict it on someone else. To prepare them for the after times.
No fallout/bomb shelter is complete without a vinyl 45 of this song.
Don't forget to scratch it, so it won't even play the full song, only the refrain.
I was born in 1956, I know all about those old steel skates 👍🏻 And I also listened to Melanie back in those days 🤗
Thank you for remaining a part of my lifes musical background. Rest In Peace Melanie.. ❤
The new season in kids in the hall brought me here. This song is awesome! 🖤
A big shout out to MotorMouth in the Morning for introducing me to this song. I'm sorry to hear that he went off air. I wish him best of luck taking care of his new twins and family through these challenging times.
His infectious personality really sets the mood. Top notch post apocalyptic content. 🤘
@@MaxRockatansky853 - If Mad Max himself is blaring it on his war wagon speakers, you know he's gotta be good!
I head a clip this morning. It was the last thing I heard before going for a 20 mile run with no headphones. That’s a long time with this song stuck in your head.
My mother use to sing this song to me when I was small. It's mother's day weekend and I'm just trying to remember her with this song ❤
My biology teacher. Played this on her guitar at the end of class one day, with a soft beautiful voice.. it was straight out of a movie scene. It was during that last few minutes of class, the bell rang and most kids left but those who appreciated it stayed back to listen. ill remember this forever because of that day
My daughter just got a pair of roller skates! Ive been singing this song for a week now! Had to play this lovely tune for her ,she thought I made it up! Lol. She loves it!!!!!
How on earth do you explain to your daughter how roller skates used to have keys??? I'm old af and I used to roller skate when I was a kid and I still don't remember roller skate keys or understand what or why or how that was a thing?! (But I definitely remember this song, it is one of my fave songs of all time.)
Do you know what roller skates and a key are a metaphor for? And you’re singing it to your daughter?
This song makes me feel like going out and doing stupid shit that I probably shouldn’t do.
Great childhood memories singing this song! R.I.P. Melanie ❤
Such a fun song from a much simpler time. ❤
if it wasn't for Maddie Poppe many younger people would have never had the chance to listen to this wonderful 1971 #1 hit by Melanie. Thanks Maddie & Melanie.
That's because they don't know how to seek out good music and just listen to whatever MTV and American Idol shove down their throats.
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. I love her song Brand New Key. Your mom will always be remembered. May she rest in peace with our Lord and King
The way she cycles through like four different vocal styles on the first phrase of the chorus alone is pretty uncanny. What a wonderful natural voice.
My mom use to sing this song to me when I was a kid. She was such a character. I had the best childhood ever, thanks Mom!💗
In the early 90s my father and I used to go for back road rides on Saturday nights and listen to oldies. I always enjoyed this one and he would turn it up for me. My father passed away 8 years ago of cancer and this song always reminds me of him and puts a smile on my face, remembering the easier times.
RIP Melanie! For me & many others as well, this song was a fun part of my childhood. I came across it when I got a bunch of my aunt's old records & immediately fell on love with it! Her voice is so unique! She will be missed! 💖
Ever since I heard the sad news last week, I can't get this very catchy tune out of my head. Nicely done, dear lady, and RIP.
1971;Me,listening to this amazing song,on a transistor radio(in hospital with a severely broken arm)..It got me through a 1-month hospital stint,at age 10.Thank you,Melanie.❤👍I was dreaming the entire month,of roller skating(in my key skates),to this song.;)
1 month to a 10 year old is like 10 years to an adult. That's a long time in the hospital for a little kid. That must have been some serious stuff hard on your whole family.
@@jiveturkey9993...Thank you for your kind reply, jiveturkey9993..It was definitely a "worse case scenario." My arm & elbow break, was one that docs had never seen. It was a "1st," and my elbow [multi-breaks in], made its way into a medical journal, in 1970. It took at least 6 doctors (from various countries), to fix ((as best was possible)), the multiple breaks in my arm. They did so, however, after the/my, "manipulation," set, I was released & sent home, only to be re-admitted 3 days later, for a "re-breaking & re-setting," of my arm.😢 Absolute trauma, to my 9 year old brain and the 8 months of physical therapy I went through, was torture. :/ To this day, I'm a distrustful loner, ((at 61)). If not for my faith in The Lord (since childhood), I doubt I'd still be here today.🙏 😇 🙏
this young lady can sing anything she puts her mind to, she was only 22 at the time.
24 actually she was born in February of 1947 and this song was released in October of 1971.
I found this song within the past 3 months. My Nana recognized it when I asked if she knew it. I love music and this is already one of those songs that has brought me a lot of joy. I randomly decided to look at more pictures of Melanie and found out that she died 3 days ago. It brought tears to my eyes. I’m thankful for the music.
If you like that there's a lot of 1970s music you should hear. Best decade for rock
Rest in peace beautiful girl.
You have a brand new key that will open up heaven for you now. 🙏
The kids in the hall show brought me here.
She gives me Loretta Lynn vibes. ❤️
Sometimes I come here to cry.
My uncle was a binge drinker. When he would throw one he would blast this song on repeat. He was an amazing guitar picker. I miss covering these songs with him ❤️
RIP Melanie absolute legend forever in our hearts. ❤
Thank you Melanie for spreading joy over the world. For me that 's the
sence of music.
Nowaday's musicians

Many people doesn't realize Melanie Safka was at Woodstock, she's an original hippie from the 60's. IMO, even though she was called a poor man's Janis Joplin, she had that special quiver to her voice that brings out the heart and soul. No one can sing this song like Melanie, but I will say Maddy Poppy does a great job from American Idol, and I'm sure she would agree there is only one Melanie.

This is a sticky song....I think....stone, sticky, song.....x.... X
This song was way ahead of its time
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio in autumn 1971. I had just been discharged perhaps only a few days before from a pediatric hospital where I had initially been diagnosed with a fatal illness and had not expected to see that wonderful autumn; the exuberance and joy of this song matched how I felt when I got home and it has ever since been a favorite.
I haven't felt so old in a long time. When I was a young child I fell in love with Melonies beautiful voice. As I matured I fell in love with her wonderful lyrics. Now at 66 years of age, the tears flow freely as I write this. Heaven has a new angel. I almost feel that I cant wait to join the great voices of my youth.
This song just floods my soul with beautiful childhood memories.
Life's constantly changing...I remember when:
1. Gas was 19.9 cents/ gallon
2. There were only 3 TV stations
3. All photos were black and white
4. A man's word was his bond
I also remember the 19.9¢ gasoline when there was a price war. And 10¢ of it was the road tax. Our dollar is wrecked.

Melanie making bank from all of the royalities. First Boogie Nights, then Family Guy and now Kids In The Hall. Best runner sketch of the new season for sure. Hope Motormouth is doing okay wherever he is in his bunker.
My Mamma told me years ago, this song reminded her of Dad, just thought I'd play it now their together ❤
On Christmas day, 1971, Melanie had another number 1 hit. The first one was Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) from June 1970. Look what they've Done to my song, Ma, and this. It was a clever little ditty with well written lyrics. Bouncy and bright, just like her. It was a year and a half of success for Melanie!
RIP Melanie - loved this song, it came out while I was at high school
I love the look on dave foley's face.

Rest easy Melanie, prayers to her family. We loved your mom. 1/24/24.
As far as I know, Melanie had three children, a son named Beau and two daughters (whose names I don't know). Beau also was a musician (guitar) and performer, and he toured with Melanie in later years.
This song may be over 50 years old but it will always remain a classic 🥲😊
I haven’t listened to this song in probably 20 years. The minute she started singing so was I. The lyrics just popped in my head. I consider this happy music. You listen and are immediately in a better mood
I seriously thought this song was released in the 2000s or something...I've heard it many times and never bothered to look it up. 1971, that's awesome!

We listened to this hundreds of times on KFRC 610 AM- SF, California. Dr. Donald D. Rose. Great song. Great DJ. RIP
I remember my grandmother sang this to me about twenty years ago and she asked me if I had ever heard it and I said I don't think so then about a week later we heard it on a show we were watching we just looked at each other and laughed 😂

We spoke a few times and we were 2nd cousins. I first met you in the eighties at a family reunion(was to young to know you then), and a few times after. My Mom spoke highly of you and always blasted "Brand New RollerSkates" on Friday Nights while she got wasted THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES RIP
If I were to create a list of the greatest forgotten songs or greatest forgotten music artists of the Classic Rock Era, I think that Melanie and this song (Brand New Key) would be near the very top of that list. Whatever happened to Melanie? Though the song is a folk rock melody, it crossed over on to the mainstream DJ plays back in the 1970s. Why have I not heard this song in years--decades??? If memory serves me correct, this song made it all the way to #1 or #2 on the Top 40 in America back in 1972. Perhaps one of today's music stars could grab some attention by "re-doing" this song, but then again, I don't know how anyone can improve upon a perfect track like this?
What happened to melanie? She got very old. She still recording. But her voice changed. She's beautiful inside and out no matter how old she is.
I remember this song going to school in the old Sardine (our nickname for our old school bus). Gawd, now I'm 56.
1971 I was 15 yrs old and this song always made me happy.
I was only 3! Wish I was 10 years older so that I could really experience the 70s to its fullest!!
Right around 1971 I believe I heard this on my am transistor radio I was 11 years old. Had a crush on a girl that had a crush on me and we didn't tell each other until we were in our late teens. Met her in 1967. Still talk to her this to this day she's the one that sent me this song. Total flashbacks of the old neighborhood thanks Heidi.
I feel better listening to this because it reminds me of happy summer nights playing in the sand and listening to the seagulls, waves and music playing in my grandma's tent

9 years old in NJ in 1971, I remember hearing this on the radio on 77 WABC. Special times, my friends.
For those who may not know, the old style roller skates needed a key for making adjustments .(sorry, I'll go now) .
I didnt really understand the song 😂 it makes sense now thankyou
Don't go man,you're ok :D
i dunno, melanie never mentioned that in all the interviews she gave about this song. she did mention it wasnt a reference to anything specific, more about her drive and focus after her father was teaching her how to rollerskate and how she'd always fall when she realized he wasnt holding her. she remarked the freudian imagery of keys and dicks was pretty well-established, but just came to her ex nihilo.
Also keys are a thing in music
Sadly! I also know! I wore out more saddle shoes, ( gawd I LOATHED those shoes, narrow feet so mom wouldn't allow anything else, except for church, I solved the issue by becoming a bare-footed hippie...) I couldn't wait to get out of school to put on my roller skates in spring, summer, fall, do you also recall FOUR DISTINCT SEASONS! I miss them. Winter, my other joy, my toboggan! Didn't wax my surf board, nope, in early September I was polishing up that "greatest invention since the wheel" . Those were the daze huh?! Nice to meet another Melanie fan. Namaste Z.
