I review the Nikon F100 using Ilford HP5+ and Japan Camera Hunter StreetPan 400, developed in Kodak HC-110 and scanned with a Plustek 7600i with SilverFast 8.8

Here's a tip about using the DOF button. Following is an excerpt from Ken Rockwell's F100 review: "If you enjoy photographing people in public, invariably one day you will have someone pop by and ask you to photograph them just for the fun of it. If you'd prefer not to waste film on this, press and release the DOF button. It sounds exactly as if you've taken their picture."
I love your reviews Mike =]
I usually just say no.
That's a really cool feature wow!
This was my dream camera in high school (1999). It was, however, way too expensive back for me to buy. I had to wait 15 years to buy it for $150. Thank you digital :)
Hell yea! Getting one this week!
I've owned a F3 for a few years and it became my go-to SLR...until I bought a F100. What an incredible camera!
Great review by the way, couldn't agree more with what you said.
Nice job on this review Mike. Thank you.
This is one of my favourite setups :) The F100 is an incredible dependable and solid camera
liked the thoroughness describing the camera. I've had mine for about 20 years with no problems. Picked up a 2nd one (used) for a backup.
the matrix meter does a great job on slide film, which is the least forgiving type of film.
Great video. Just picked one of these up and looking forward to using it. I take my dogs to the Benicia Pier frequently an recognized some of the photos in the video.
Best review for the camera by far. Thanks for all the effort
Wow, I really appreciate that Barrie, it means a lot! Thank you so much for watching!
I m Nikonista for life, I have f100 , d300 , d750, z7 ... f100 is build like a tank shooting film with my G series lenses in 2020 it’s awesome, picture quality is amazing... Good old dark room days !!!!!
I just took my F100 out of the closet and I’m pretty rusty on it. But your comprehensive video took me through all holes 🕳️ in my memory 🧠 of it. A big THANKS 🙏 for putting this out. A major help to the moderate Alzheimer’s crowd 👳🏻♂️😅
Very good and clean review - thanks Mike!
I really appreciate you watching! Thank you!
excellent video. I'm bidding on one of these now on eBay.
Good review. Got me looking for one on Ebay.
Thank you so much for this. Couldn't decide between the Canon EOS 3 or the F100 and you sold me.
thanks for watching! Let me know what you think of the camera when you get it!
Great clear easy to follow review. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Great vid! I've been eyeing this camera for so long. =P
SUCH a capable machine. Fairly underpriced for what it is, too!
Thanks for sharing!
Super nice review, thank you!
Hey, thank you so much!
I liked your photos.
In my experience with it, the F100 is the most usable, practical Nikon SLR. It's range of feature exceeds my willingness to learn and adapt. I like mine so much that I bought a second camera in storage for the day that my first version breaks and cannot be repaired. Over more than 55 years I acquired more than a dozen Nikons and sold or gave away three. I think at 73 Ill be selling all except the 2 F100s, a mint Nikkormat FT3, and a minty FG (for risky business). Once again, JCH Street Pan proves that it's a 160 ISO film, not a 400.
A+ on the video... Thank You
Thanks so much, I appreciate the kind words!
I got one too a few months ago and I feel in love with this beast. Got the F100 with MB-15 and the Nikkor 50 1.4 D for about 75€ on eBay.
What's the name of the seller??
Nice thorough review, Mike. Since you say you only use the center AF point there is no appreciable difference between the F100 and the F90X/N90S in terms of functionality.
great point!
A nice review, however there are a couple of points any one buying the very nicely made camera should know. Firstly there were two model, the one in this review is the first version at around £895 appropriately new and there was a second version at around £1100 with a fixed battery box. The reason for this was that the cameras was very heavy on AA batteries and the version featured only lasted for around 4 cassettes of film! I know I bought one a few years ago s/h for about £125.
I love my F100 and the Matrix Meter is fantastic, especially for slide film, ie: Velvia in all of its ISO's speeds and Ektachrome. I would take this over any other 35mm automated camera and you get access to all of that fantastic Nikon glass from Fisheye all the way up virtual telescope-like long lenses. No other option at this price point can make this claim, in my opinion. Buy one, NOW!!
I wish you would have tried a few shots with the Spot Meter on the F100, to see how it would have handled that stump. I really enjoyed this video, keep up the excellent work !
Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate you watching! It's definitely a super-capable machine.
would have gotten 100,000 views by now had you shown close ups of each button/screen icon etc corresponding to each feature as you talk through them
What lens should use better for this camera nikkor 50 mm 1.8 G or D ?
I love my F100. I don’t understand how this camera can be had for much cheaper than the FM3a. The F100 is also weather sealed like the F5 too!
Teng Vang I think people nowadays tend to really value all-mechanical operation over battery-dependent tech. That’s my guess anyway!
The F100 is NOT weather sealed like the F5!!!
Mike: I remembered a long time ago people say Nikon's matrix metering is good/great for slides/positive films. Would you be kind enough to shoot some of the new Ektachrome 100 to show us if that still hold? Thank you.
I'd love to! I haven't gotten my hands on any Ektachrome yet but I definitely will at some point
Just got an F100 and my background is in much earlier 35mm SLRs, rangefinders and 120 consumer cameras (and I do have a Panasonic Lumix micro-four-thirds mirrorless). Thank you for your video -- lots of good info! Some questions -- did you use matrix metering on your shots? did you use any filters (color filters to tweak the "color" balance for BW film)? what did you use to scan your negatives (hardware/software?) and at what resolution? Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching! I used Matrix metering exclusively for everything I shot with the camera. I really wanted to put it to the test. I didn’t shoot with any color filters, just the bare lens. I scanned with a Plustek 7600i (basically the same as the (8200i) and I scanned at the maximum of 7200dpi so I could squeeze out as much detail as I could from the negative.
@@themikepadua -- Thanks! I plan on using mine for the first time next week on vacation at the beach (Ocean City, Maryland) -- I'll do comparison shots using the three different metering types. Will be "street", landscape and "portrait" going with family. Probably color (love Ektar 100) and various B&W film.
I love my F100. When I'm shooting B&W I use the spot meter and exposure for the shadows because I like high contrast B&W. If you use the averaging meter you get a middle gray which to me looks wiped out.
F100 is good, small and capable... I would say it is small F5 in some meaning. Just some got problem with the plastic rewind fork...it tended to break, what can be pretty annoying!
hi mike thanks for your videos. I'm really undecided between the Nikon F100 and the Nikon F6 which one do you recommend? or directly Mamiya 645. I would like to use it to make fashion. thanks gianluca
Thanks for watching! Honestly, I have never used an F6, but from what I know of it’s features, it doesn’t offer me an advantage over an F100. I have a tendency to use one focus point and have no use for ITTL; it I ever shoot with off camera strobes I’m setting the lights manually anyway. Good luck in your search!
How to change the aperture if using G lenses?
Does this camera have a 'point & shoot' mode? If not can you recommend a really good 35mm film camera that does? Thank you.
It definitely does: it’s the “P” setting which is Program. It makes all the decisions for you.
Whats great about the F100 is you can use all the modern lenses, to include VR. Unfortunately, Nikon used stupidly cheap plastic film back latches that are a known weakness. Recommend that anyone getting the camera monitor closely those latches and reinforce them if necessary. Otherwise, the F100 is a great camera.
TXLorenzo how do you reinforce the latches ?
Question? I have prime lens from nikon are does G version will fit on this f100 camera
G lenses work fine on the F100
i have a youngnuo lens used for nikon (youngnuo 50 f1.8) can i use them on nikon f60 body?
In theory it should but there's only one way to really find out.
@@themikepadua yah i did and it's not af lol
I like how thorough your reviews are. Do you have a Canon equivalent to the F100?
Nabhonil Sarkar I don’t have one but I definitely intend to get my hands on one!
@@themikepadua Do you know of any Canon models that are similar to the F100?
Probably a Canon EOS 3
@@themikepadua I bought my AE1 program near mint for about $200++ last year. Could you tell me why the EOS3 is also around that price range? It seems a lot more advanced than my AE1 program
My guess (and it's ONLY a guess based on my opinions) is that the EOS3 is approaching a very digital-like experience. Highly advanced, computer controlled, and handles like any of Canon's modern digital EOS cameras--whereas the AE-1 Program calls back to a more manual, mechanical feel and aesthetic.
I’ve had two f100’s and liked them very much, but both of them had a problem with the rubber covering in that after around 5 years of use the rubber became very sticky and soft. This got bad enough that I the cameras couldn’t be used without getting the residue all over your hands and other equipment. Has anyone else had this experience, and is there a fix?
Michael Buchmeier i have heard many folks having this problem. The most common solution I’ve heard is completely removing the coating with isopropyl alcohol. I haven’t done this myself but I assume it just leaves a smooth surface since the grip material is removed.
Do these things take AA batteries or do they only use old nikon batteries?
AA batteries
Hi, thanks for the review. jfyi the link in the description is not valid anymore
Thanks for the comment--yes unfortunately that seller is no longer active
will my n90s sense work on the f100?
Neil Spector yes!
Is there a way to leave the film leader out after a roll is finished?
that feature is not available as a custom function, however Nikon once offered a service that modified a Nikon F100 to do so. I'm not sure if they offer it anymore, though.
@@themikepadua called my domestic Nikon dealer. It's no longer possible. Bummer!
what did you use to scan the images?
Plustek 7600i using Silverfast
Mike Padua How do you like the Plustek? Looking to get a 8200i to replace the Pakon I sold.
@@FotosyMas. It's great but it definitely has it's pros and cons. The 7600i and the 8200i are actually the same exact hardware, just with different bundled software so you'd be getting the same scanner as me. It's biggest advantage is it's optical resolution. At max settings, 35mm frames are over 10k pixels on the long side and it resolves a TON of detail. It handles film with a really bad curl very well. It's also relatively inexpensive and can be found used for a good deal--mine was just over $100. The downsides are workflow, obviously: you have to advance each frame manually and scanning each frame takes a while. The lower resolutions are faster but it is no speed demon like the Pakon! I should also add that in terms of optics and color, it's better than ANY flatbed I've ever used.
Mike Padua Awesome! Thanks for the tips. My idea is to scan only the frames I intend to print 13x19 and for the rest I can still use my Epson V550.
@@FotosyMas. You'll be in great shape then, it will serve you well even for prints bigger than that.
what are we going to do when no one produces film for cameras any longer?
While this may be a possibility in the future, I have good news: companies are producing film now, with Kodak bringing back emulsions from the dead, and new companies entering the fray!
Бро, куда ты окуляр DK-15 дел?
any of you users had a problem with the back door? - I am just about to need the third one for my F100 - Nikon made the plastic door latch not the metal one like in F4 or f5... on top of that Nikon stopped selling the doors - on ebay there is plenty of F100 without the back door... It's hard to love that camera just for that reason ...
Not personally, but I've heard of this problem happening really frequently from a lot of people!
@@themikepadua I'm using rubber band for now to save the film, but I will need another door... www.photrio.com/forum/threads/nikon-f100-door-latch-broken-repair-myself-if-i-can-source-door.170704/
Maybe it's me Mike, but I clicked your link and it gives me an error!
It's been a couple years, so I think that seller is out of the game, unfortunately!
Great review but coming from Nikon all the way to Canon, the former did a great job at producing the more iconic and best cameras in the world like the f3 and f4. The controls of the cameras after those got all clumsy and all over the place... difficult to find buttons and switches here and there!... On the other hand nothing unsurpasses the ergonomics and the position of controls in every single Canon EOS camera ever produced from film to digital, they are just at the user's fingertips!

Nice review, great camera - I have one. But UGLY!
Richard G thanks for watching. Personally I think it’s a handsome camera-it’s just really big to me!
Ugly? No.
