  • Chris Liebing is a DJ and producer from Frankfurt, Germany, who has established himself as one of the most influential and sought-after artists on the underground techno scene over the past 25 years.
    In this video, Chris explains what techno is and how it differs from mainstream dance music (EDM). To Chris, techno is not about playing the hits or “waiting for the drop.” Rather, he feels techno relies on a slow exposition of sounds that use tension, release, and contrast to take the listener on a journey.

    It is funny how humble Liebing is. He says he does not have the talent to play sets with only 2 turntables and he admires people who can. I listen to a lot of top DJs and Chris Liebing would be so bored to play like them, one song beat matched to the other. Chris composes LIVE, he has 4 to 6 channels going on at the same time. Acapella, beats, synth. He takes excerpts from different existing techno tracks and adds percussions and effect on the fly, inspired by the moment. He creates crescendos, drops and moods and can never repeat a set. He is a visionary leading the way. He is right there a live musician and a DJ. All he needs to do to improve I believe is hire artists to add more deep dark vocals on his beats because sometimes, for dancers like me who don't consume substances, it is a lot of beats... But he is still my favorite. Chapeau (hats off) Chris!

      I agree, I went to see Liebing one night where I decided to keep it to drinks only, was overwhelmed by the amount of beats going on. It was still good, but definitely a different experience, and exhausting. Keeping up with that man is quite the objective hehe

      Chris is the example himself of a sober DJ having a great time. This guy does so much live creation I don't see how someone who is not sober could operate such a control room. It looks like the cabin of a plane pilot! I also like that he does not do hearts with his fingers!

    Screwing up the beatmatching a bit makes techno more interesting. I'll always remember the bit in Jeff Mills Live at the Liquid Room CD where everything goes a bit wobbly and it still sounds good.

    it was great until DJ's decided to become remixers and co-producers on stage. When I hear people say hearing a DJ just playing records is boring I cringe. DJs are suppose to let the artists work shine without burping all over it. Oh well.

    • @alexehlke707
      @alexehlke707 Před 7 lety

      Techno DJing is a different game, and has involved this sort of manipulation since the 80s. Indeed, the tracks themselves are made to be tools, not to play straight.

    • @busywl69
      @busywl69 Před 7 lety +1

      with digital, of course. how can you not with all the tools they have now. but still it sucks for the original artists because know one is going to know your track, and if they do they might just get an isolated bassline loop or 1 minute of it with a bunch of other elements on top of it. How do they even do playlists today?
      The DJ is the uncredited co-producer now. Kind of like the un-commissioned addition to the band lol.

    • @alexehlke707
      @alexehlke707 Před 7 lety

      with vinyl even... just look at what jeff mills was doing early on, for an easy example

    • @busywl69
      @busywl69 Před 7 lety

      Jeff was one of the few and the proud that played that way back then in such a frenetic style. Not everyone could do that, nor did they want too. Pitch blending wasn't something every DJ could do with ease and many an artist had to become a DJ just to stay relevant and cash in on that easy money. You often got DJ mixes that were just blending the last minute of a track with the first minute of the next one in a long continuous mix. Those mixes are heavily appreciated because you get to hear the music as the artist originally intended, despite being in the mix.
      WIth sync you can do whatever you want. I love vinyl mixing and I love sync. Its what DJ plays that matters, and I like to hear most of the track in the mix the way the artist intended. Otherwise artists might as well make loop collections and loop packs. Its already happening more and more. Better grab some stems lol.

    I do respect him, but when he says "forget drops"...I can't help but get the feeling this is because he doesn't have the ability to make a drop, dubstep, electrohouse or otherwise. I do like the music though.
