    I am over 70 and just getting into Ebiking. First thing I noticed was the pressure on my hands, shoulders, and on my butt. So first mod was as you have done, raising the handlebars as high as the cabling would allow, and second was to put the biggest seat on the bike that I could find. Got vids showing that on YT as well, and thank you for sharing your experiences, we all benefit!

    Excellent idea!
    I usually install a setback seat post and 10-12 inch riser handlebars to get that 'pedal- forward position' for comfort. That normally requires recabling the brakes and shifters along with wiring for the display and so forth.
    I may have to see if this works for me, providing I can get the seat low enough and the proper setback.

    Just from personal experience with installing a stem riser, I would suggest iaking off one of the original stem spacers (that sit under the stem) and test the fit of the stem riser. I found that I had to replace one of the original 20mm spacers with an 8mm spacer. You want as good of a fit in this high stress point as possible.

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 3 lety

      Mechanically I would say yes. But I am uncertain how the steering dynamics would be affected.
      An alternative would be to use some suspension to move the seat forward and an adjustable stem to bring the handle bars back.

    Excellent, like all of your videos. I've watched several, and especially the one in which you talk about all of the mods you've made. I'm interested in the Cruiser and the one thing I noticed you didn't change were the mechanical disc brakes. Does that mean you're satisfied with them and didn't feel the need to switch to hydraulic?

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 3 lety +2

      I like that they are easy to work on. Once you get through the break-in period, you don’t have to adjust them as much. And they work fine for my area. (relatively flat)
      Full hydraulic brakes are very different to maintain. There is less adjustment and if there is a problem you will likely be dealing with bleeding the oil or something along those lines.
      Hydraulic calipers would be a compromise. I might try them in the future, but the mechanicals are doing their job for now.

    How often do you have to tighten/adjust the new stem? I'm curious because I really need to raise my handlebars, but the Amazon reviews for this item mention it shifting position quite a bit while riding and needs to be adjusted on the fly. What has been your experience with this stem and reliability and being secure?

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 2 lety

      My personal experience is great. I haven’t had to adjust or tighten it at all. The adjustable stem has light detents with the angle adjustment. If you make sure they are properly seated I don’t think you will have any issues. If it gets tightened with the detents aligned improperly then you could have an issue.
      I will often pull up on the handles bars with some force to reduce the pressure on the front tire when hitting bumps and haven’t had it loosen up at all.
      Hope this helps!

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před rokem

      Good morning. It is likely that you don’t have enough spacers under the adjustable stem. The system is predicated on having that 1/8” sub flush gap I spoke of in the video. So you need to make sure that the fork cylinder that comes up thru the head tube is sub flush of the adjustable stem before installing the top bolt.

      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 3 lety

      I haven’t had an error 30, so no first hand experience. I do know it’s a communication error. Which leads me to believe that somehow you may have loosened a connector. I would check all the connections you can get to. Be sure to pull them straight apart, DON’T twist. And push them straight together after you line up the small tabs inside. Be careful not to bend over the pins inside.
      Hope this helps!

    It looks like your final picture of the larger adjustable stem is on the bike the opposite way. I take it you can put these on either way and if it is drifting too far forward you can turn it around and make it come closer to you. One way it gets farther from you and the other it gets closer, but straight up is the same both ways.

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 3 lety

      Again, I don’t know how the steering dynamics would be affected if you put on that stem backwards. It is meant to be installed so it bends down away from the rider. I don’t know where you are seeing it installed backwards, but after reviewing my video the images I show have it installed correctly.

    • @TinkeringTurtle
      @TinkeringTurtle  Před 3 lety

      I looked at the video again, and I think you are referring to the two bolts that attach the adjustable stem to the steering tube. on the stem I used they were on the back closer to the rider. On the one you chose, the bolts are on the front of the bike away from the rider. That is just a difference in where they put the bolts. The Stem is still supposed to be installed so that it leans forward away from the rider. The location of the two bolts do not necessarily dictate the orientation of the stem.

      There isn’t a mechanical reason that you can’t do that, that I’m aware of. It should still be strong. It may feel weird while steering, I’m not sure.
      Something to consider, when you put on the adjustable stem the correct way, because the head tube is slanted back towards the rider, when you raise the stem or angle the adjustable stem the handle bars do come back towards the rider.
