Hello there, as a guy in Norway I can tell you why there ain't that much of nordic recipes in the book. It's because there ain't much that is grown here and the cuisine is very lacking as a consequence of that. Most people here in norway don't really eat "nordic cuisine" to be honest and I've had the same experience when I was in sweden and denmark. The last one has good pastry and baking culture though. But yeah, ain't much to see here in terms of food that is local.
I disagree. As a dutch man i love your fish and meat culture. Simple and tasty. Also love the bread with some butter and dutch cheese. Just like my own culture its basic rustic tasty filling and good for getting big and strong. We eat to survive, not survive just to eat.
I mean I agree and I totally disagree. You don't know how good simple food can be untill you have tried true swedish meatballs with lingon Berry jam and brown sauce. It's a food everyone has tried but few has tried the high quality one.
The addition of asian cuisine is probably no accident. In the post game, when you see Tyr, he's doing some Tai chi exercises or movements, or sitting in ways traditional to eastern cultures. The Devs hinted that the next God of War game is gonna go east, either to India for Hindu myth, China for the Tao/buddhist/confusionism blend that Journey to the West gave us, or Japan for shinto myth.
This series is SUCH a winner - there's so many novelty cookbooks out there that I just can't buy without hearing if the recipes are any good. Here's hoping this series sticks around for a LONG while!
I really appreciate you showing off results of attempts that are less than ideal! Cooking is about enjoyment and it's ok things something don't come out well.
yeah, that cheese filling was far too watered down. Next time, take that apple and lemon juice and reduce it by half gently on the stove to concentrate it and remove the excess moisture. You can also just use a single tablespoon of frozen apple juice concentrate and 1 tbsp of lemon juice and a pinch or two of lemon zest. This keeps your cheese filling firm. I'd also recommend using the leftover dough to layer on top of the original dough and build up the "wall" around the filling. Just brush the edges down with butter and apply your dough sheet strips.
I love cookbooks, especially novelty ones; I read them like normal books and I spent hours pouring over the art. It's nice to get a review of which gaming cookbooks have good art/flavor text before I buy them with the added bonus of getting a review of the recipes too!! Thanks so much for these!
After traveling to New York to make friends with turtles, almost loosing my sanity in innsmouth to a shouggoulash, barely surviving an Island full of prehistoric killer-geckos and visiting the four Nations... I'm going to the nine realms for more recipes!
Maaaan I was seriously hoping you'd cook those really cool looking potatoes in the cookbook! The hasselbackpoteters! They look so amazing. They do seem basic though so maybe not too fun to cook
They definitely look amazing! I put it up as one of the options in my Patreon poll but nobody voted for it so I was thinking maybe folks won't be that interested
I've made them several times, they're amazing, and are traditional nordic food. They're pretty easy to make, and if you do it right, it's like the best parts of french fries and a baked potato mixed together.
I feel like using the Dwarven season blend on wild game, slow cook it until it is fork tender, and make the juices in to a nice thick gravy somehow. Or even make the seasoning into a glaze by adding some melted butter and maybe a bit of brown sugar.
What I'm wondering, out of all the cultures they chose (to represent the Nine Realms, I guess) - they ignored greek recipes? When Kratos, the main character of the series, is greek? Edit: Revoking that statement, as there seem to be greek recipes, I just didn't notice them.
Probably because they used the lore from the recent games to theme the book. It's mainly been Norse mythology displayed in the last couple games. I would've loved to see some Greek recipes too though.
When you say you suck at baking all I can think of is the Adventure Time quote "Sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something."
2:03 if the cookbook is a journaling of all of the foods Tyr tried while traveling then it’s not really gonna be what Kratos and Atreus are eating lol so that explains why there’s different influences besides Norse, it’s from different REALMS
1:58 I was really surprised to see Aish Baladi being one of the recipes in the cookbook seeing how its the name of bread here in Egypt lol, not sure if this was a hint for the new games, or just the cookbook adding middle eastern type dishes as you said, but anyways really cool to see it randomly like that lol.

I would have loved to have seen some nice fusion work as well between Greek and Nordic food as well. I guess I can only dream.
Hey Miso! Great video as always. This book looks super interesting. For the goat cheese tarts, I probably would've popped the tarts with the filling only in the fridge for a couple hours to firm it up a bit. I also wonder if the pressure from brushing the honey butter on the apples caused some of the spillage as well, so maybe tossing the apples in the honey butter before putting them on top would've worked better? Though, that would get pretty sticky to work with, so another idea would be to heat the honey butter so it's easier to drizzle/pour on top of the already placed apple slices. Not sure which would work better 🤔
I agree this feels like the setting to focus on Greek and East Mediterranean dishes with maybe a slight touch on asian dishes before going into Nordic and Germanic inspired dishes. If anything it's a spice guide for more exotic meats like quails and lamb which more people should try out if they want more advanced cooking ideas.
I never would have expected God of War to have a cookbook and such a good one at that. All of the recipes look delicious and that Freakin Gratitude in particular had me salivating.

Loved God Of War Ragnarok, so I might pick this up! I've been wanting to cook more food from Scandinavian culture and cultures from the surrounding area anyways, so two birds, one stone! I wonder if there are Egyptian recipes in there, too. If the book is based on Tyr's travels, he did travel outside of the Norse mythos into the mythos of places like East Asia, North Africa and (of course) Greece - so it could explain some of the Eastern dishes being presented. I'll just have to get the book myself and chew through it.

You should try the stranger things unofficial cookbook if you have the time. I know it's not a game but I figure a themed cookbook nonetheless. Happy new year and can't wait to see what you cook
My friends and I are trying to go through a variety of fowl for fun (or, I really want us to do it while they humour me), we have already done chicken, and last time we did turkey, and I was initially planning on us doing the Final Fantasy XIV Cookbook's duck next, when we find time in our lives to do it and find some duck. I am half tempted to try the quail if only because I cannot remember evern having tried it (usually chicken and grouse are what we find here), and if nothing else, the size would make it an experience, and whatever we cannot get from the bones, I can use to make stock. I would have found it interesting if the cookbook tried to go deep into the food of the Nordics, but I would worry that it would sort of be like with the Game of Thrones and Avatar: The Last Airbender cookbooks, that the food would not necessarily be anything tasty, and what would be tasty would require ingredients difficult to find. Besides, I get the impression that the God of War games do not try to go for any realism; they researched the Norse mythology, took what they liked and warped it to fit with what they wanted to tell in their games, so in a way, this cookbook picking what it likes and then going a bit everywhere with the various recipes works within the context of the duology. I say it with caution, though, since I have not consumed the games myself and only heard secondhanded about them.
@@MisoHungrie You know the funny thing? I purchased the Horizon cookbook by the same author (haven't played the games, but I love the author because she makes every recipe an unhinged adventure trying to find some of the ingredients, haha!), and my sister and I noticed how there seemed to be more Nordic recipes there, or at least food we both recognized from special occations or childhood, so perhaps she got inspired. That book also had quail, that was half the reason I got the book, because while I was in the capital, I found a store that sold it, and I was able to get it home still frozen!
I'd really like to see you try to make the Mississippi quantum pie from fallout3. the lady who makes it ask you for three ingredients. nuka cola quantum flour and vodka I doubt that's enough to make a pie. feel free to fill in the gaps.
"I can't imagine Kratos and friends chowing down on bahn mis and shishito peppers and soba noodles..." ...Trust me. Eventually, Kratos and Sun Wukong are gonna come to fisticuffs. >w>
Hmm, I’m not an expert but, can you perhaps modify the tarts by putting the pastry dough in a cupcake liner and adding your cheese in there instead? Or does it need to actually be flat?
I feel like there was a step that was missed in the puff pastry dessert. I don't understand why the instructions asked you to make that second smaller ring on the inside of the dough. Maybe you were supposed to fold the sides up like a pie crust?
I think the various different cultures is meant to either represent the 9 realms as having various different cultures or the fact that Tyr traveled the world

@@MisoHungrie gonna try it next week cross fingers :) thank you!
You should try the stranger things unofficial cookbook if you have the time. I know it's not a game but I figure a themed cookbook nonetheless. Happy new year and can't wait to see what you cook
I'll check it out. Happy New Year to you as well and I hope you have a great 2023!
I really wanna try the sausage they had
Fantastic video! 🤣
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m gonna start collecting video game cool books and aspire to be a master chef in the gaming world.
I literally was just playing this game! 😂
You should make the perk a colas from cod zombies
A cookbook? Kratos specifically told Sindri that he does not need a snack
🤣
Well these aren't snakes there meals
Poultry tasting with friends sounds fun! And you're bang on about the GOW cookbook. Good insights.
I wanna make that recipe in the cookbook! It looks really cool
"I can't imagine Kratos and friends chowing down on bahn mis and shishito peppers and soba noodles..."
...Trust me. Eventually, Kratos and Sun Wukong are gonna come to fisticuffs. >w>
Rosenthal's books always seem to be a big hit. I wonder what the feasibility of reaching out to her for an interview may be.
Are there many baking recipes? I have a friend who likes GoW and baking and I was wondering if I should get her this book as a gift in the future
Yup, solid amount of baking recipes in the book imo. I think it would make for a great gift!
@@MisoHungrie thank you!

I think the various different cultures is meant to either represent the 9 realms as having various different cultures or the fact that Tyr traveled the world
earth is midgard (srry for the misspelling I'm tired)
nice
Please tell me "Tyr's Passable Dirt Soup" was a recipe in the book
Unfortunately that didn't make it 🤷♂️
