- After being fired for being gay by the Michigan Catholic newspaper in Detroit, Brian debates the head of ex-gay ministries for Anita Bryant on popular Miami TV program
I want everyone who has watched this video to know how grateful I am that youmtook the time to do so, and that some of you even shared your reactions. I was just a kid when this was taped. I was in my late 20s, had been recently fired for being gay, and I found myself being asked to speak about gay issues. I ended up doungnit for forty years, but I never take for granted the gift of time people give me to talk about my experiences.
Brian you were (and probably still are) s'damn CUTE! : D
Aww! Thanks for sharing the vid.
John, i remember in the seventies, seeing anita Bryant interviewed by phil Donohue. When he brought up the subject of sexual orientation ( vs. Sexual behavior) you could see the fear in Bryant's eyes. Could it be that her subjectivly comparative sense of moral superiority was threatened? Any thoughts on my earlier comments in this thread?
I remember as a kid seeing anita bryant interviewed by phil Donohue. When he brought up the idea of homosexuality fundamentally being an orientation ( verses a behavior) there was a distinct fear in Bryant's eyes. Could it have been due to the fact that a more in depth, complex view of homosexuality threatened her subjectivly comparative sense of moral superiority?
How long do you have to “practice” before you become a professional?
I wonder how the ex-gay feels about Miss Bryant, who divorced her husband to remarry, while the first husband was alive. That same bible that he used to condemn homosexuality, condemns Miss Bryant as a adulteress! Just check out Romans 7:2&3. That would label Mr. Hasen as a hyopcrite, for choosing what SINS are okay, and which are not.
I tried to correct misspellings but was unable to do so. I've been educating others on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues for 40 years. It's been a gift to me to do so.
Brian McNaught is a fire-brand, a strong performance!
You can't give up being gay or "practice" bing gay. You are just gay just like people are just straight. same shit, leave it alone
"Practicing Homosexual" we don't Practice. We are not a Sports Team. We are Humans. The Heterosexuals I guess "Practice" their sexuality. The Best Part is when the "guy" said "He" and Brian said, "Or She" tried to sidestep it placing He as meaning both Men and Women. I Love how "Religion" still make Women second class.
Actually, the word "gay" became popular in the 1970s in the gay community. I agree with your mom that many heterosexual people didn't become comfortable with the issue until the 1990s.
I was born in 1970. When I was growing up, the word "gay" was NEVER said out loud in my house. My parents did their best to avoid the topic completely, but if it was unavoidable, they'd use the euphemism "that way," as in, "He's that way, ya know."
Times have definitely changed for the better.
I credit Justice Kennedy on the Supreme Court. He was a deep-red conservative in most ways, but his passion for travel brought him in contact with judges from around the world. He was close to judges on the European Court of Human Rights and the supreme courts of nations like South Africa, the United Kingdom, Austria, etc. These judges called Kennedy out for how backward in thinking the Rehnquist and Roberts courts were, so much so that US jurisprudence had lost the allure of American exceptionalism. Developing countries no longer PRESUMED the US judiciary and legislation were the best exemplars, especially on the topics of capital punishment and human rights.
In Romer v. Evans and Lawrence v. Texas, Kennedy joined the liberal justices to declare that gays were FULLY equal to straight people and could no longer be presumed criminals by their very existence -- something #TheReligiousWhite particularly enjoyed.
Lawrence v. Texas was especially invigorating for gays.
Then came Windsor v. United States, which declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional for violating the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the 14th Amendment.
And, finally, Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognized gays fundamental right to marry the person they choose.
Heck, in the 90s I wasn’t comfortable with myself and didn’t know why I was different or how I was different.
What ever happened with John Hasen? Brian McNaught seems to have had a successful life and relationship with his partner of 35 plus years.

Nope, the john hansen from the video passed away in 2003.
That queen John is just evil because the cute guy wont give him the time of day. If I hear the word homosexual one more time I am going to fall on the floor laughing.I am sure that John is in the gay bar now doing drag shows.
Yes, he is evil but I also feel empathy for him. He has absorbed the teachings of others- likely from an early age- that told him homosexuality was not a natural state of being. These teachings have undoubtedly caused him tremendous unhappiness.
I would love to know what he is doing now
he likely faded into the sunset after Miss Bryant went against biblical teachings, divorced her husband Bob Green, and remarried another man while Mr.Green was very much alive. He saw that ole Anita was just an everyday adulteress happily living and frolicking in her SINS all while condemning homosexuals. He may have even fell back into some long overdue Gay Lust!, You see with hypocrites like he & Anita, they never think that their sins will track them down.
Well now we the priests and nuns did act out their homosexuality
Thank you for uploading this Brian. This is my grandfather, John. I'm his granddaughter, a transgender and pansexual lady. He passed away in 2003 after a long battle with cancer when I was six.
Chris, there are an army of sacred souls, earthly and heavenly, who support you unconditionally. I admire and applaud your courage in affirming your true self.
You have the similar mental condition as your Grandfather, You can be as you like, but just don't be in delusion and c consider yourself "Christian"
@TheStrong32 It was in 1979.
you did very well - greetings from Germany
@@kai-uweeberle5590 Thank you.
The ‘practice of homosexuality’ is the practice of love.
he is a practicing homosexual.. practicing? nice...
"Practicing homosexual"
This person never said that their mother was comfortable with the issue; they said that their mother had not heard the word used in correlation to homosexuals until the 90s.
What happened with John Hansen (Hasen)? I did not find any info on the web. Not even google find him!! Is he alive? Is he still a "ex-gay" activist?

That "ex-gay" didn't want to admit that homosexuals can still have the desire without acting on it cause it would mean that he too is a homosexual. Fortunately for bias Christians, there's a biased translation of scripture to suite both tastes. The NIV 1st edition condemns "homosexuals". The second edition condemns "practicing homosexuals". So see, when you change scripture the first time, you feel less guilty when you change it the second time. It's not like the Greek ever mattered in the fi
This kid was soooo brave. Anita Bryants grand daughter is getting married. Never heard of her so I came to CZcams. OMG.
Thank you, Leah. I’m not totally sure where my confidence came from, but in my upcoming memoir I credit my family, faith, and maybe DNA. I’m now celebrating 50 years of full time work as an educator on LGBTQ issues. I’ve got gray hair but the fire is still there.
The "ex-gay" is upset because if homosexual is used in it's proper term to include anyone who has sexual desires for persons of the same gender, then he would have to conclude that he isn't actually "ex-gay". I wonder where this man is today! I would love to know how his life turned out!
Remember the Bible was written at a time when most of Europe was in the stone age.
lol @ "practicing homosexual". Like it's a career or smtg. A person is a "practicing podiatrist" or "practicing orthodontist..." Not a "practicing homosexual." It's called being your authentic self rather than living a lie & dragging some innocent straight person into your deception.
I’ve known as friend six Catholic religious Everyone practicing. Celibacy is not even realistic. Sexuality is expression of Love Flush these oddballs down and out.
I agree, Dick. It ought to be optional for those who feel the need for abstinence. Otherwise, celebrate sexuality as a possible wonderful means of expressing love and/or sharing intimacy.
A practicing homosexual. Well, you know what they say:
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice practice practice!
That was one of the worst digressions I'ver ever seen. From homosexuality to the proper use of pronouns. Wow.
I'm John Hansen with Dateline NBC, please take a seat and explain why you brought legos and pizza for a 12 year old boy! 👦 Okay, you're free to leave but cops will pummel your a$$ in the driveway on your way out!...lolz
John Hansen was making a good point about using the term him as a pronoun to mean all in the common langauge and Shirley Peters was not listening to him. Very unprofessional on her part.
As abhorrent as the garbage views and teachings of “John” are, I feel empathy for him. He is a self denying and self loathing gay man, which makes me incredibly sad. I’m sure that his internalization of such garbage has caused him tremendous unhappiness (and of course, he in turn has caused unhappiness in others). And I say that as just some middle aged white heterosexual guy in case that matters
Thanks, Tommy. You’re right. It always breaks my heart when I see a guy with his wife but his eyes glued on another guy in the restaurant. I never stayed in touch with John, but not long ago heard from his lesbian granddaughter that he finally came out before his death. You’re a perceptive man.
0:24 "A practicing homosexual"
This debate is poorly driven. Key questions are not asked, The "dignity" guy is dominating.... I dont think this has much value
(cont) in the first place, right?
@RodTalon00 No, it is hard to despair like that with today's technology, I am impressed
Does anyone know if shirley Spellerberg still hosts this show, or what she's doign today? I remember seeing her on Good Morning America a few times, she takes the role of such a good Christain here, but she is oen of the most full of hate people I have ever seen.
"A hamasexshual"
everyone here is saying the word homosexual and not the word gay, did that word not exist back then?
I am an ex gay
Sure Jan!
@@jzachery I am now bisexual and live it well :D
@@jzachery are you gay ?
for the purpose of clarification...little miss tubby on the left was the one who queried john's use of "his" ...then tried to blame him for taking issue with what SHE wanted to say!
listen again folks and hear for yorself
