  • Studio tour of my DIY 192 sq/ft small sound mixing and recording studio. I did every step from drawing to final paint myself. You can build your own studio too, it's not that hard and it will save you money.

    So similar to my situation. I converted an outbuilding (as opposed to purpose-building) but absolutely love the fact I can go out there whenever I need to and get stuff done. Without the hour’s commute, as you say. I also was passionate about having enough space to leave my drumkit set up too, even though I can’t play for shit! 😂

    This is awesome dude. I recon the rationale is really sound about building it. It also separates the 'work' from the other elements of one's life. Brill!

    Bravo! In England they call it a 'man cave'. 8 bit guy has one that will survive the power outages in Texas. 😅

    Love that reference to the UK at the end about gardens lol. Brilliant video and again, this has changed my thinking a little because I have been thinking about finding some commercial space in the next 12-18 months but I think you're right, you waste time on the travel and then the commercial rent so what's the point especially when majority of work is done remotely. Plus, I used to be a joiner before I changed careers and specialised in outdoor garden buildings. Would you say working in this type of space doesn't affect the work you receive? Like it wouldn't put certain directors off etc?

      I still rent out bigger spaces for productions with a proper budget.

    Nice studio build! As someone who has done a couple of garage studio conversions, I can appreciate the effort (and expense) that goes into it. I wonder though, did you consider starting with something like a Tough Shed as the starting point? I built a pool shed a few summers ago, and when my utility shed needed replacing, I decided to go with a pre-built. But I'm retired now, so have a little less incentive (and more cash) to build from the ground up. Congratulations on your new space, and keep up with the useful videos!

      Yes, but the price would have been much higher and the quality lower. I used good material (real plywood, not osb) and was able to frame it like a house.

  • @bshupp

    Sounds like you did not build it sound proof (room within a room)? If that's the case, do you have issues with exterior sound bleeding in when recording, or neighbors complaining about sound?

    • @ThomasBoykin
      @ThomasBoykin  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It’s more soundproof than a house due to the Rockwool insulation inside the walls. But not 100% soundproof. You can hear the drums if you are in the back yard, but they aren’t that loud. Neighbors are far enough away for it to be a non-issue.

    What SPL are the speakers set to? Do you plan on upgrading to Atmos?

    • @ThomasBoykin
      @ThomasBoykin  Před 3 měsíci +2

      82 for film and 79 for tv. I’ll probably add atmos in the next year

      @@ThomasBoykin It is super expensive.. I am waiting for the release of Avid EUCON API and we will be finally able to make our custom surfaces. I am planning to buy an S5 and make it internally compatible with the newest Pro Tools releases.
