Dali ship lost power before hitting Baltimore bridge, CCTV reveals

  • CCTV footage reveals the container ship which demolished the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore lost power moments before the fatal crash. Video taken as the ship approaches the bridge shows all lights on board go out, implying a total loss of power including to the engines. A short time later the lights came back on as a backup generator kicked in but the ship never regained engine power and was left adrift. In a last-ditch bid to avoid disaster, the crew dropped anchor to try and stop the vessel, and when that failed they sent out a mayday call allowing police to close the bridge to traffic and likely saving many lives. Six people are missing presumed dead in the wake of the crash, all of whom were maintenance workers fixing a pothole on the bridge at the time. #keybridge #maryland #baltimorebridge

The ship has redundant hand-steering controls and ruddering........ They could have dropped anchor to the Stern, then had manpower use ruddering to steer about and completely avoid this even with no power. Instead they decide to head straight for a supporting column.

How does a container ship, moving at speed in a straight line, suddenly make a sharp turn to the left. Even if the power failed, the weight of that container ship, would still steer it in a straight line for quite some time, it wouldn't suddenly make a sharp turn, it doesn't add up.

That is exactly what it would do .. the boat lost power, it’s momentum made it impossible to stop..they dropped anchor to try and prevent further drifting and engaged the reverse thrusters .. It was an unfortunate accident .. those in charge of the boat did everything they could in an impossible situation.. The fault lays with allowing a boat with know faulty power issues back out to sea.
