  • Original WPIX Broadcast from Turner Field with Dave O'Brien and Tom Seaver. Recorded and Digitalized straight off the original recorded DVD Recorder/burner and has been recently restored (BluRay) and making its debut on the Phenia Film MLB archival channel.
Mets are looking for the first win of the season (0-5) and the Braves only one loss in the early 2005 season. Pedro Martinez (0-1) vs John Smoltz (0-1) what turned out to be another classic pitching battle as John Smolt pitches and impressive 7.1 innings with great control, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits with an outstanding 15 strike outs and walking 0. Martinez just the same with great control pitching a complete game going the complete 9 innings almost to perfection, allowing 1 run on only 2 Braves hits.
Braves have the 1-0 lead through 7 innings, Smoltz is relieved in the 8th, by left hander reliever Tom Martin then right hander Roman Colon as the Mets come up with 5 runs in the 8th including back to back HRs from Carlos Beltran (2) a 2-run shot (off Martin) and Cliff Floyd (2) solo HR (off Colon) as the Mets and new skipper Willie Randolph bounce back and win with the first game of the season.

    Sensational pitchers duel
Pedro = Complete game, one run, 2 hits, one walk, just 100 pitches. He had 9 strikeouts, it would have been more amazing if he had 10 strikeouts (but thats just me being picky with double-digit-strikeouts)
Smoltz = Almost 8 innings, 2 runs (a two run home run by Beltran in the 8th inning), no walks, 15 strikeouts (WOW). As for Smoltz, 2005 is his first season as a starter since being a full time bullpen pitcher starting in late 2001 (and what a sensational run it was for Smoltz as a closer).

Pedro was throwing hard early in his first season as a Met. Dialed it up to 95 mph at 24:00 and threw it right by LaRoche for the strikeout. He started throwing up to 94 mph consistently in the 4th, but maintained his command with his hardest pitches as he just missed the corner at 41:58 with a 94 mph fastball. At 59:34 Pedro had failed to put away Langerhans with 3 straight 93 mph fastballs so he finished him off by throwing one right by him at 94 mph. Pedro then starts off Smoltz at 1:00:11 by throwing a 94 mph fastball by him and then puts two more 94 mph fastballs on the corner at 1:00:25 and 1:00:33 to end the 5th inning with 4 straight 94 mph fastballs for strikes. At 26:36 Pedro did strikeout Joe Randa on 3 straight 95 mph fastballs after the Dunn home run to end the first in his debut, but consistently topped out at 94 after that. But Pedro was so tough because his best pitch was the changeup you see at 32:26 which was 15 mph below his top fastball at 80 mph. Pedro got a perfect 83 mph changeup over to Andruw at 43:16 which was so effective because it was between fastballs at 93 and 94 mph. Pedro's curve was arguably his 3rd best pitch, yet he picked up most of his strikeouts with it, including called strikeouts at 34:14 and 44:09 and 1:40:26 and he used it at 57:25 and 1:07:32 and 1:09:18 for swinging strikeouts. At 26:36 Pedro did hit 95 mph on 3 straight strikes to Joe Randa after the Dunn in home run in his debut but then consistently topped out at 94 mph after that.

Oh gosh, I forgot that Brian Jordan was back with the Braves in 2005. Giving memories of the Mets-Braves rivarly peak years of 1999-2001
Jordan hit a grand-slam against the Mets the game before on 04/09/05

This was baseball how its supposed to be a classic game with two aces going punch for punch

Hmmm, although I would say that Tim Hudson was the ace of the Braves in 2005

I miss this 2005 Mets team. Still my favorite Mets team under the Omar MInaya era. Should have made the postseason. Left so many winnable games on the table
I remember after the Mets won this game, starting the season 0-5, I knew that the 2005 Mets were gonna get on a roll, and they did, as they headed back to Shea to start the season.
    Jose Reyes had 3 hits.
Miguel Cairo with a couple of nice sacrifice bunts late in the game

I had been looking for this tape for ages. I broke my VHS cassette after accidentally stepping on it. I taped this game along with the Sunday Night baseball game where Johan Santana had a start. Smoltz and Pedro had vintage stuff.

I think this is the first season the Braves wore those "spring training" jerseys

At 15:27 Eric Gagne during those same 3 seasons from 2002-2004 was the most dominant closer ever, but you could put Smoltz up there with just about anyone else. At 37:54 Roger Clemens threw just about the hardest splitter I'm aware up to this point from 2000-2002 with the Yankees. I've seen him throw it as hard as 94 mph and regularly up to 91-93 mph with the Yankees without sacrificing the late movement. I've also seen Kevin Brown throw a 94 mph splitter with the Dodgers and he regularly threw his splitter up to around 93 mph with both the Padres and Dodgers. But it's remarkable that Smoltz returned to the rotation at this time with pretty much the same stuff he had during the mid to late 90s. You still see the 96 mph fastball, great splitter in the upper 80s, and the sharp breaking ball here. The main difference I believe is that he threw more of a hard slider in the 1990s.

Wow! I wanted to see! Pedro vs Smoltz! that's just a great pitching matchup! Thanks for the upload!💯
Do you have the Mets vs Marlins (5-27-2005) and Mets vs Braves (9-16-2005)?
Both games were well-pitched by Pedro.

1:25:00 Smoltz is taken out of the game, and in frustration, he intentionally touches the line. Pitchers tend to avoid the line since its considered bad luck to touch it, but since Smoltz was leaving in frustration, he didnt care for luck
