    I have my six 992 demonstrator's set up as eyedropper pens. I had to remove and glue on the barrel finial on two before I inked them. (checked for leaks with water first) No leaks after three months. No silicon grease, the included pre-installed rubber "O" rings on the section and the housing do their job. Even the four or five with cracked housings don't leak or burp ink when writing. 3.5ml of ink lasts a lot longer than the 0.5ml of a cartridge or converter, too. 👍

      I just inked this one up again yesterday for the first time in a while. I'd forgotten about the supplied o-ring.

    Thank You for the review James! I was about to track down and purchases Jinhao 992 medium nibs for the fine nib pens I ordered but having seen this is easily a F to Medium nib I'm staying with the provided nibs. Learned this after seeing your writing sample with Jinhao 992 fine and that size line is what I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing your findings!

    Great review. Its an amazing pen and the cost of the same aside, its a good looking good writing and a practical, daily carry pen.

    Have several of the translucent 992 pens and have just ordered pack of the opaque ones. Have so many of the Jinhao and find they have all been good, except for the 911 which has leaked 3 out of 5.

  • @jamesaritchie1
    @jamesaritchie1 Před 4 lety +9

    Very, very good review.
    It's funny, I love expensive pens, primarily the Namiki Maki-e and Chinkin pens, along with Scribo, Visconti, and a couple of other companies, but I love these 992 pens, and I think I've bought more than sixty. I've also bought just about every model of pen Jinhao makes. The 599 pens were, to me, complete duds, but just about all the others have been great. I really like the 750, the dragon pens, and the 8802 and 950 that have ceramic barrels.
    I've had several manucturers tell me that the 450 and 750 would easily be fifty to sixty dollar pens if made in the west, and the ceramic barrel pens could easily go from seventy-five to a hundred dollars, depending on the model. My experience says they're right about this. Which means it's more than worth the cost of putting a new nib on a Jinhao.
    Some people I know, including one I know really, really, really well, have even put gold nibs of the Jinhao pens they like the most.
    I really do not understand my fascination with Jinhao pens, but I use half a dozen of them as often as I use my really expensive pens.
    Anyway, I use the 992 pens to test sample inks before buying a bottle, and before putting the inks into much more expensive pens. I also give them away, mostly to kids whose parents say they're old enough to try a fountain pen, but often even to adults. But I probably still have thirty-five or forty of them lying around, or in a pencil holder, or in a drawer. I really need to count them.
    I'm usually not an eyedropper fan, but I finally decided to try them as eyedroppers about six weeks ago. I filled the barrel of two without making any modifications, and on two others I put a thin layer of transparent E6000 glue on the outside of the pen around where the plug is. And that is a plug at the end of the pen. It's in under a lot of pressure, enough to often cause pressure cracks around it, so most people who want to make eyedroppers from these pens put glue down inside the barrel, or pull the plug and put it back int, along with a liberal dose of plastic glue.
    But so far, I think the E6000 on the outside is doing the job. I've treated the two pens with the glue horribly rough for the last six weeks, bouncing them around in a backpack and a pen case, dropping them, and just not being nice at all. So far, neither has cracked, leaked, of stopped working. Nor has either burped, though I don't allow the ink level to get much below the halfway mark before refilling.
    I never thought it would happen, but these eyedropper 992s are pretty much the only fountain pens I've used in the last six weeks. It's actually been fun, and I've had no problems at all.
    I will say he fine nib is actually thinner than several European opens I own, though I touch wider than the Japanese fines I own. But Japanese fine is usually like our extra fine. But I purchased only one six pack of pens with fine nibs, so my experience may differ from yours. I still have two of the fine nibs, just to make comparisons with other pens
    I will also say I find the medium nib to write smoother, with better consistency, and with absolutely reliable ink flow. The medium also seems to go a good deal longer between cleanings than does the fine. That is, at least, the impression I have, and something I just realized a few weeks ago.
    Right now, you can get six of these pens from Amazon for $11.99. If you have Prime, it's free one day delivery in ,most areas.

      Ditto. I’ve bought a few dozen and give them away to anyone who shows an instance. The newer ones have dual gold-silver nibs that make them look classy (opaque ones, not the demonstrators).

      It`s a great entry for anyone wanting to try a fountain pen, or to people who never considered trying one as well.
      I started with a Lamy Safari, but haven`t gained an attraction for luxury pens, what I HAVE gained is a fascination and love for Jinhao`s and Wing Sung`s hehe.
      My favorite pen per now is actually a Baoer 3035, doubt many people will have heard of it, but it`s a smooth and enjoable pen, costing a whopping 3-4 dollars 😁

    I have a medium (or perhaps broad) Jinhao 992, and I don't love it, but--I'm also not super "used" to fountain pens, so maybe it's just me. Ink isn't super consistent, but seeing how positively the finer nib sizes are being treated makes me think it's less of an issue with other models.

    I just received mine today. It is quite good, considered a price in Thailand is only $0.75. I don't expect it to be high quality acrylic or anything like that, I just want a pen that I could toss around in my bag. Really good value pen I think everybody should have one.

    I really wanted these to be good. I bought a five pack and while I haven't inked every one of them. I've done 2-3 and they all write poorly for me. Lots of skipping and just dry and scratchy. It's disappointing because the 450/750 and 51s were all excellent. My Jinhao 51a is easily my favorite pen. It's so smooth and never skips even after sitting for months. Maybe I got some duds. Knowing me though I'll probably pick up a couple of the demonstrator colors and try them again. Ya never know lol.

    Thought I would ask if your 992 has experienced any cracking. Mine cracked around the cap finial a couple of
    years ago. I did apply an epoxy glue, which had held, though I rarely write with this pen. The nib is surprisingly
    a smooth writer for the cost. I only wish the material used in manufacturing would have been a bit more durable.

  • @blipstirlingboy3019
    @blipstirlingboy3019 Před 4 lety

    I think that the purpose of the odd ending of the barrel is to reduce the risk of cracking at the end?? I dont know but i think thats what it is because some plastic pens break at the tip without doing anything

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 Před 4 lety +1

      Just the opposite. That odd ending is a plug necessary because of the way the pens are molded, and it actually causes pressure cracks in the barrel around it. Jinhao may have gotten the message, however, because the new 992 pens, those made in the last six months, don't seem to crack nearly as often as the older ones did. I think they may have reduced the diameter of the plug slightly, just enough to take off most of the pressure.
      At any rate, it's still a good idea to put a little glob of glue down inside the barrel, or even to removed the plug and add some strong plastic glue before you press the plug back in, if you want to use the pen as an eyedropper. If you don't, then those pressure cracks may look bad, but they really don't harm the pen. Anyway, as I said, they may have solved the problem.
      I use a thin layer of plastic glue on the outside, and after six weeks of very rough handling, the pens are still doing fine as eyedroppers.

    Thinking of getting this for my first fountain pen, I have been pondering the Pilot Kakuno, but price is a wee bit steep if you consider that it does not include the converter.

    • @marcosmartins2537
      @marcosmartins2537 Před 3 lety

      It is a great pen indeed. I have one and I bought the con-40 converter, but if you are willing to take the chances, Jinhao will definitelly not let you down. The 992 and the x750 are a joy to write with. If I knew about them before, kakuno would not have been my first fountain pen.

    • @aegystierone8505
      @aegystierone8505 Před 3 lety +1

      @@marcosmartins2537 I have both now lol. My honest opinion is that I would have preferred the Kakuno to be my first fountain pen, it is a very well tuned pen and the nib writes with the ideal balance of smoothness and feedback, this along with a comfortable grip.
      The 992 is still a great pen nonetheless although it takes some tuning with the nib and exploring for the best ink to pair with it.

    • @SilverSeaOT7
      @SilverSeaOT7 Před 3 lety +1

      I’m going to order these 992s because of the consistently positive ratings (and let’s be honest-the price) but the Kakuno has amazingly smooth nibs! Amazon has had them as low as $9 each. The nib alone is worth that.

      It's a flow/air flow issue, so the first place I'd start is to flush it out and clean it. Sometimes there is a just a bit of debri from manufacturing (and it can be very tiny) that will cause a bit of a clog. 9 times out of 10, this fixes the issue for me.
