- Black Desert Online otherwise known as BDO is a buy to play open world sandbox MMORPG on PC recently released in the west for North America and Europe, since release I've played this MMO almost exclusively to try and form a full and objective opinion about the game.
Black Desert is a very complex MMO that takes a long time to learn as a new player, it boasts true action combat, an in depth crafting system and mass scale PVP however lacks in game cosmetics, a decent beginners tutorial and a fleshed out PVE endgame, This video is a summary of my thoughts about the BDO after 420 hours of play time, I've already covered this game in a first impressions video, journey to level cap and a top 50, this video is a culmination of everything I've experienced so far.

+SiopeR It is true that armor cosmetics do not change all that much without cash shop but they do change. For example all the set items, or even just green rarity items, will make you look different, some have only minor changes while others may seem like another outfit. In my own opinion the character creator makes up for the lack of armor cosmetics to some extent though.

+TheKSH991 Buy to play mmos are fine, but not when youre also faced with f2p problems like being inconvenienced for not spending money on cash shop. Cosmetics fine, server transfers fine, name change kinda meh on social aspect but still fine.
Cash shop if you want to have 1 in such game should be so unobtrusive that you might miss it if you arent perceptive enough.

I thought perhaps if I minimized the game it would take less resources. Then this option to send to tray came up. Man I was so happy. Electricity bill saved!

i dont want anyone having super easy access to a skill reset..that just lowers the value of your good initial build. that being said, you get skill resets for certain levels/achievements anyways

endgame consists of grinding mobs, grinding stuff so npcs can grind for you, building boats to kill whales, and paying real money to change your armor. couldn't really see that being any fun at all.

+Gaute Animation Holy shiet THIS. I LOVED the first days in FFXI when it was released, holy shiet took me a half day to just get out of town to die right away and get lost again XD. Community was soo important, most games for now are solely for the simpleminded, which is an insult to us gamers.

I love how you say the ghillie suit isn't P2W in your opinion, but you *had* to buy one to keep level pegging in PVP. Other than that, good review.
I mean, Mabinogi was, back in the day, the complete oposite to a "Theme park" MMO, and it had a story and a strong PVE content with multiple dungeons and loot options, and open class system. I don't really think an MMO just for being a Sandbox is justified to not have a good story or engaging and challenging PVE, i think if this game had those things, this could perfectly be the perfect MMO.
Quick question. are you over 60fps ingame while recording? what program do you use to record? Fraps? i can never get my quality as clear as yours! any advice would help so much. - new subscriber
+crazitomali I think the game's locked at 60 fps, it's never been above that, I use Nvidia shadowplay to record, fraps hurts frame rate too much

You might have the bug where the game changes your refresh-rate and if you got Vsync on (either in game or via Nvidia/AMD control panels), that would do it.
..but it is simply a bug - the game has no framerate lock at all. My i7-6700K + GTX970 gets me above 60 easily, with "high end mode" turned on (Before anyone start ranting about that option; it gives you higher render distance and less pop-ins - I love that!).
Might even be shadowplay doing it, if that's set for some framerate.
Just use OBS for recording, if you're gonna be streaming as well anyway - no reason for 2 apps to do what 1 app can do.
If you already use Shadowplay, there's a setting for OBS to use the Shadowplay encoder as well (wont get the features of Shadowplay, but it will use the encoder, meaning less strain on your system), with more options for customizability as well.

after playing it for 6 days trial i can confirm that its a grindfest and becomes very dull after a few days
and i had to slap a friend of mine for telling me "its just like the witcher but as an mmo you should totally get it"

I was very much opposed to BDO until my friends bought me a copy (one of them then quit the game lol), but I'm having a blast roleplaying a lone goat herder living on a mountain doing alchemy and cooking. My boyfriend got drawn into specifically beer brewing.

Why exactly are you salty about what other people choose to spend their money on?
The character creation made me buy this game. Still have fun with it, while waiting for my new graphics card.
I've had the game for 2 years. I am still having fun making my characters.
I was part of the second closed beta. I uninstalled after an hour or two, because it felt SO much like a free-to-play game. UI hurt my eyes, animations felt weird (have you tried climbing something?), and the tutorial was basically this:
Black spirit-thingy says: "Hehe! These guys are dumb. Go kill them!"
Then you go kill them.
Black spirit thingy says: "Good job! Go kill those guys!"
On and on, untill you're told to go to a fort and get a quests there from some frustratingly awkward and disgusting characters. Then you do some other weird stuff that was like a skill-tutorial, if I remember correctly. Then you just start parkouring around the place out of boredom. That was my experience, at least.
6 minutes in and no one said 'first'. GJ boil.

My honest review of Black Desert Online:
I've played every single MMO I can find. From good old Ultima Online to the mainstream World of Warcraft to Blade & Soul, Wild Star, Archeage, Tera...
But Black Desert Online is without a doubt the most premium feeling MMO I have ever played in my life. From the graphics quality, to the animation, to the realism of NPCs. Everything about it feels just awesome. I can't afford to play the NA version just yet but I spent all day yesterday setting up the Japanese version and I love it.
+Oliver Tectus Premium is a stretch ...I mean have you heard the atrocious voice acting >_< I mean you can get great graphics quality, animations and realism quite easily...but if you cant even get proper voice actors/actresses, it cant be premium >_< Like the npcs look amazing but then when they talk to you ...its like..."say what now???"

What i dont like about this game is just few things
1. Grind to lvl up
2. No big PvE raids
3. Lore is bad
Everything else is fine idc about ganders costumes just give me somthing to do on END GAME. One more thing that bother me is that in future can turn in P2W like every other Assain mmo

I hate the fact that you always look the same if you don`t put money into it. It`s fucking stupid. If they have to do it, then atleast give us some options to optimize our clothes in the character creation....
I also hate that the classes are age locked. The male wizzard is always old and the female wizard sounds like she is 11. Fucking annoying. Same goes for tamer, she sounds and looks waaaay to young for my taste...

I dont like to feel like a god when i'm playing an mmo, i want to be an simple warrior or wizard, not a god.
and if i wanted to grind i might aswell play diablo or Path of Exile.
Wow, not being able to choose from a decent number of cosmetics, armor sets and neat clothing is a deal breaker for me. It's just not acceptable in an mmorpg, I need that level of customization. It's part of the fantasy and roleplaying aspect as well as offering different options for builds (if they have different stats). Lazy developers, shame on them.

I felt the same initially. But there is so much more in this game than getting armor and fighting things.
If you’re into RPing that you have some kind of Profession, check out the life skills. You can cook, trade, fish, produce, train and breed horses. (And some other things I forgot about).
You can get your own house that’s actually located in a village, city or rural area. It’s actually IN the world and can walk straight into it.
I will want to get a nice outfit at some point. But for now I’m satisfied with being a dedicated horse breeder and trainer!

Small caveat. It's not "true action combat", because the game still decides if you get hit based on evade % chance. I don't know how many times I've clearly dodged something in the game only to get damaged anyway. The game "decides" for you if you got hit or not.
To me, the combat makes the game more immersive as you aren't just clicking buttons. Combos add to that feeling that you are actually fighting. The family thing is also kick-ass as all of the toons in your stable contribute, such as getting good knowledge of a creature on one character ahead of another visiting that zone. This also covers the contribution point system that influences city upgrade (building purchases, energy investment and worker contracts), nodes (energy investment into both drops in the zone and specific worker nodes for better stuff) and renting stuff (farm plots, muskets, flutes, storage chests and other equipment).
This sounds like the ultimate game, I hope it does well and doesnt go free then die like the others. I dont have the time or rig for this atm

Not casual, you do need to learn to play it, it's just not worth to do and learn so much in a game and receive so little progression.
I feel like if they made purely pvp game it would be better in that aspect and if they made better pve(dungeons/better looking equippable items/removed cash shop/better rng) it would be a better mmo but it does neither.
Maybe in a distant future it will be a great mmo.

Thank you for making this video! I learned a lot about BDO from what you said here. I started playing BDO about a month ago after watching yours and others "top MMO's of 2017" videos. I have been immersed in the world content and as you mentioned, they don't teach new players about how to play the game. It was a nice refresher to see this video and to learn about many facets of the game that I have not explored. Now that I know this, I will spend some time watching the game guides you mentioned because even though I have only had 3 deaths by level 53, I clearly have not mastered my character the way you have in this video. I'm not a person that hates when people compares wow with this game. And says that certain things is better.
But it is really annoying when streamers (not including Peon) is playing Black desert and always saying that Wow is worse. * cough * KungenTV * cough *. I Don't care if you are saying that. But you are playing BDO not wow.
The whole game is about exploring an alternate fantasy world, the game doesn't breastfeed you as it wants you to 'explore' and find things out for yourself. Yeah it could do a better job of giving you the basics but its not hard to pick up! For all those people saying the only content is pvp, there is so much other stuff you can do in this game, I personally have spent hours just connecting nodes to create a trade empire. Yes the best way to level up is by killing monsters, but isn't that how a hero would get stronger and more powerful anyway if you think about it, by earning knowledge about creatures etc and killing them. The game is very much designed around gaining knowledge and exploration (hence the no fast travel), like Peon said he rushed to lvl 50 and quite a few people pointed out he had hardly any energy and contribution, energy and contribution go a long way in this game, so there's a lot more to it than most people think before they hate blast it for being an 'endless grind'. Just go on and have fun, in whichever way is fun for you, some people it will be grinding to 50 and doing pvp, some people it will be setting up a trade empire etc. It's probably the best looking mmo out there at the moment and it has a lot of great features other than just 'grinding' that we haven't seen in an mmo before. The game is only going to get improved and better over time and learning all the new stuff is part of the fun right?

One important question. I don't want to play this game like a regular MMO. I don't want to do PvP or PvE (beside what's required for my goal) etc etc . I'd like to be a full dedicated trader. Can you do it here? is this game deep enough for this kind of idea?
For example ArcheAge has a really dept trading mechanic, is Black Desert at least at the same level? Can it provide enough content ?

+TheDorianTube No you can't, don't believe the BS people will spew. There are level locked areas and you can't trade directly from point A to point B, you have to connect the dots in between (A->C->D etc.) and in order to do that you need to unlock the various villages/cities in between. Once you've unlocked them THEN you have to connect them using a resource called Contribution Points (CP), max is ~300 (I think they increased it recently, not sure you have to check).
To call this game a sandbox is a downright lie. You can't just go out and do whatever you want like EVE, Mortal, Albion, DayZ, etc. (true sandbox games). You are restricted not only in levels but also in "knowledge" and "energy" which are directly connected. The more knowledge you gain the higher your max energy is, the more energy you have the more activities you can do. However, the only way to gain knowledge is by talking to the majority of npcs and kill monsters. This all circles back to level locked areas.
If you try to do whatever you want you'll see that you have too few CP and energy to do anything, so what does the game force you to do instead? Go grind, then go to each village, then talk to every npc you can, then run back and connect nodes... it's an endless list of objectives that sidetracks you from your main goal which is the direct opposite of a sandbox game.
Either way, don't believe everything I say or anyone else for that matter, I encourage you to look up the information online to confirm or disprove anything you see. People who've already bought into the game have been brainwashed by Daum cause they got screwed out of their money, I'd be wary of what they tell you.

You've helped out a lot. After trying Destiny 2 and realizing online games aren't as horrible as we once believed (mildly asocial), We've been looking for another one to try. BDO caught our attention but we weren't sure about it. After your review we can go in with eyes wide open! Preciate it!
I dont care about the ghillie suit, but when you say "I feel forced to use it to be on a level playing field". That tells me its definitely pay to win. No matter how small the advantage is.
Its was in right from day one, so its something people should be concerned about for the future.

You say the ghillie suit is an excuse... yet you still wear it
in PvP combat? So is it an advantage or not? I know it’s an advantage because I’ve
seen people 360 and still not figure where they’re being blitzed from so the
attacker can get in a few extra shots. In a game where you can blitz kill
someone, the ghillie suit is a pretty solid mechanical buff. Small buffs give
people the edge when people are basically going to be stuck around the same +15
power wall initially while they hope the Black Spirit doesn’t eat their enhancement
stones.
You paid for the game, but you’re not continually paying for
the game. Yet the game has continuing costs. Those costs will prompt for some
more in game buff and mechanic changes for cash and then we’ll see when the
cash shop finally reaches that acceptable threshold of ticking people off for
selling blatant advantages for cash.
Even a .0001% buff is an advantage. It shouldn’t be there, not in a competitive game, but we’re not paying monthly for this game. The glossing over of the cash shop is the same thing people did for Archeage until Trion/XLGames started dropping some real surprises. This should be headed off quickly. I really don’t want another MMO turned to garbage by another Korean company not realizing that even the appearance of P2W can be the difference between a deal breaker and a license to print money..

Don't worry, you don't wear the suit and I'll keep wearing it. We don't have to be desperate. we notice how players react when they're getting blitzed with and without the suit on.
There's no tab targeting to save anyone so it's pretty hilarious to watch someone swatting air while multiple ghillies dance around them.

+Lward96 Yeah, it's a first world problem for sure. It's just that their really isn't a whole lot of end game for this thing so the company should probably do what they can nix anything that can make the PvP seem skewed based on the cash shop for the western market.
The combination of the suit plus the fact that many of the character models outside of the Berserker looking similar seems to account for when I see people just slamming a chosen target then getting turned around and not being able to reacquire their target.

Gender is cause of the lore and storyline, there's a village full of women only valkerie, why the fuck would there be a male version lol
I think basic biology should help you figure out why a village full of women would cause problems, unless they've covered how they deal with that

GW2 is also a game that is not WoW clone, has it's own direction, and it's has lots of features alike Black Desert, yet you never mention that.
+narkar they are different beasts. Guild wars is still a theme park MMO with good PvP section of the game.
Black desert is a world that feels alive, people are running around everywhere of all levels. Where Theme parks worlds are dead and only used by leveling people. BDO, archeage and other MMOs like them has a heavy focus on a breathing and living world, where guilds matters and politics, alliances and things like that are formed.
+The Gombie oh please... last time i listened someone say.. that an MMO looks like Alive.. that keeps changing.. etc.. it ended up to be "half" true but never how they say. Blackdesert ironically won't make much fame like wow etc.. for the simple thing that isn't a Userfrendly game, well this is mostly becouse they throw you inside with 1000 of things.. and a really crappy tutorial sistem. Just like ESO many people in the USA left the game becouse isn't userfrendly.... i personally did have this sensation after joining blackdesert beta.. after 2 h trying to understand how the hell can i see my friends i was like.. nop im done. And never touched Blackdesert anymore. (i play a lot of MMO so im not new in this field)

I don't care if it doesn't make fame, nor if its good or not. I played the beta and i'm not going to buy it, I simply don't have the time. I never stated that it is good or the best. It's okay, but different.
But i won't deny the world feels lived in vs the empty leveling zones of theme park MMOs. The objective and day to day is so much different, and alot more social.

After having watched good ol' Nixxiom's video on Black Desert Online I was hyped af, your Honest Thoughts Video pretty much sculpted my hype into sincere excitement and understanding that this game is very in depth and will not be picnic. Now to save up enough money to trade my potatoe with.

I believe that you should get 1 hour of entertainment for every dollar spent (I know, crazy) is this worth the money mate? I've been wanting to play an mmo since I quit wow but they all seem to be very similar and stale.

+David ll Depends on how much you like a game and how your overall experience was. A better margin would be to compare an entertaining evening with your friends or watching an awesome movie in the cinema and relate the costs to it.
A regular movie is about 2 hours and costs about 8 euro in my country. By that margin you pay about 4 Euro per Hour. If we relate this on 60 Euro/Dollar PC Games you should get about 15 hours of playtime out of it. There are of course games that grants a lot more but often for the quality of experience.
An example is Fallout 4. You can play it for about 200 hours until you saw everything and experienced every encounter possible in the game, which mean the hour of gameplay costs you about 30 cent, but also a lot of stuff feels pretty generic after the 50 hour gameplay mark.

+Shogun_ lol yeah, I don't hate it but it feels like every release is the same as the last, thus the appeal faded rapidly after modern warfare. I always try to give every game a chance but the CoD games have over stayed their welcome, and I feel like other game developers are trying to jump in the bandwagon and make uninspired generic shooters, that's why we are saturated in fps games nowadays. No hate though

you do realise it pretty much IS a themepark mmo right? a true sandbox is something like EVE online. In this game there are clear scripted objectives for whereever your interest lies. its not as streamlined as for an example world of warcraft, but it is not completely sandbox, not at all
