    Differences between two 2017 Escapes:
    For the 2017 2.0 L. the oil pan bolt is a 15mm and with the 1.5L it is 13mm. The oil for the 2.0 L is 5.7 qts of 5W-30 and for the 1.5L it is 4.3 qts of 5W-20.
    Also the oil life reset is reached by the graphic display controlled on the steering wheel left side on the 2.0L that I own and the 1.5 has the gas/brake pedal combo as described at the end of the above vid..They both use the same Motorcraft FL-910-S

We also had to put water in the coolant system, which you shouldn't have to do with a new car like that. The problem as we were told was some sort of water leak into the heads. After researching, it's a DEFECT in that engine and Ford replaced it but they apparently aren't making that public because a total recall would have monstrous financial repercussions.

    fiend4mojitos said below that the 2.0 turbos have a much-easier-to-access oil filter. I cannot emphasize enough how true that is! Taking the huge cover off from underneath the engine & transaxle (via 7 #27 torx head screws) is actually the hardest part. With the cover off, the filter and drain plug are right there! Very easy job.

    Nine fasteners hold the lower cover in place. Seven are #27 Torx screws and two are 7 mm bolts. The oil filter cap wrench is a 74.5 mm X 14 flute with 3/8 in drive. It is very difficult to remove the oil filter without the cap wrench. A 76 mm will work but is a little large. The video shows both cap and band type wrenches. The band type is hard to use because hoses are in the way. I used a Motorcraft FL-910-S filter and Motorcraft 5W20 Synthetic Blend oil. Note when removing and reinstalling the lower cover there are two places that the cover hooks on to the vehicle frame. This holds the cover in place while the fasteners are replaced. 2017 Escape 1.5 EcoBoost.

      If you need an oil filter wrench you are putting your oil filters on too tight.

    • @bilbobaggins8337
      @bilbobaggins8337 Před 5 lety +2

      @@clemire83 You can't get to the Oil filter to loosen or tighten it enough by hand with at least one of these engine sizes. If it's not tight enough a significant amount of oil will drain onto the lower cover pan before you may ever notice that the oil level is low. A proper wrench is needed even for the first oil change as the factory torque is fairly tight.

    Jim The engine is a 1.5 L ecoBoost, It takes 4.3 qt's (with filter change) of 5W20 oil. The 2.0 uses 5.7 qt's (with oil filter) of 5w30 oil. You mis-quoted the amount of oil by stating the amount needed for the 2.0 instead of the 1.5. If you put in 5+ qt's you over filled the engine.

      I was thinking about this as well... 0.7q low should not get your close to the high mark on the dipstick unless you left a lot of old oil in. I was also remembering that when you run the engine you have to let it sit a while to let all of the oil drain back down to the pan to get an accurate oil level reading.

    Thanks for video Jim. I would like to know why Ford puts a fibre cover underneath the engine and also over the engine. Never heard of such a thing. I have a 2016 Edge, and I have removed the cover that was over the engine - it just probably keeps the engine running hotter. I appreciate you not putting a full oil amount in the engine after a change. This is what my Ford dealer did - put six quarts in like it calls for, and the oil dip stick now has the level a quarter inch above maximum level. The service mgr says it will not hurt it to be above the max level. The level should be between the two X's on the stick, and not over maximum. I have changed my own oil for 60 years, and never put in the full amount - always checked it and added some to make it right. Can you please e mail me with your comments.

      I believe the covers underneath and on top reduce cabin noise. I've owned a 2015 Escape and now a 2017. The 2017 model is a lot quieter on the road.

      This is probably resolved after two years, but I would have had removed the excess oil and never gone back. It's experiences like this that sadly fit right into the stereotype of service techs at dealerships. No point in arguing with someone who gives that advice, but they don't know how an engine works if they don't think extra oil is a problem. Otherwise, you would just fill oil up until it overflows. For as long as it took for them to try and excuse the problem they could have just said they were sorry, made a mistake, and fixed it.

    When resetting my oil life I forgot two little things. 1) Do NOT start engine. 2) Add new oil to engine first. Sooooo....after only 18 seconds with the gas pedal flat-to-the-floor it may have reset. but I am not sure, as the engine kicked a rod and put a big hole in the oil pan. Luckly I saved the money of that expensive syn-oil that certainly would all have been on the floor by that time. Instead, the oil was safely still in the jug setting on the work bench. lol.. just kidding......so the hood and doors must be closed for this to work? Come on car manufactures. Why are there over 200 different oil-life-reset procedures depending on make, model and year? And why do NONE of the car makers have the reset process in their owner's manuals? Also, how can it cost $1000.00 to change a $20.00 headlight bulb? And why is the battery hidden deep inside the front fender of my wife's Chrysler 300? This can not be by chance.

    The engineers that designed this thing needs to have their asses kicked. Battery location bad, oil change pain in the ass, carbon buildup on intake valves, Ford says you need to replace the head. It's every bad automotive design all rolled into one.

    That's pretty stupid to put a shield over where you need to access to change the oil and it obviously wears out, our Ford Escape only has 30,000 miles and that shit is flapping in the wind when we drive down the road. Grrr..

    What a shit job by ford to put the oil filter in that location, very disappointed as i have a 2017 ford edge and I hope this not the case; I don't understand why "engineers," do this. They are not dumb, but this is a dumb location. Man I miss the old reliable 3.5 V6.
