    It never ceases to amaze me that when I watch a video of things I already know how much little tips and tricks are brought back to the fore front of my mind. Thanks for jarring the ol' memory box....needed that.

    I really loved adding the scrap wood at the bottom of the vertical pieces to hold the lower horizontal pieces. Really brilliant way to solve the problem of only having one set of hands. To guys like me who are hacks, these are really great insights to solutions I would have never thought of. Thank you!

    Just a note to say thank you for the inspiration and idea for the raised garage shelves. I tackled this project today (with some minor issues thanks to a combination of mathematics and my lack of carpentry skills). Although MY framing came out kind of janky, it's solid and will do the job. I'll finally be able to clear the garage floor and get rid of the ground shelves. I'm now subscribed to you and April Wilkerson ... I admire both of your skills, ideas and creativity. A big thank you from the mountains of western Maryland.

    @TdotRob Před 6 lety +1

    Jay, this inspired me so I built my own shelves off this design and it worked out great. Although in my case it wasn't as easy as it looks in the video and took me three weekends to complete. The first two and a half of those three weekends were cleaning out the garage enough to get the ladder up next to the wall. After that it got easier, though. By the time I got the shelves up I didn't need them as urgently as before I started, so I stopped at one wall and have a sheet of plywood and some 2x stock left over. It'll make a good start on a miter station. Best of all, I think my wife is even happier with the result than I am.

    Years ago.....I hung uni-strut 2’ off the wall. I cut up some scrap uni-strut about 4” long and ran a lag bolt into the rafters that were running perpendicular to the wall. I hung 1/2” threaded rod 3’ long and then hung the uni-strut from the threaded bolt. I placed the threaded rod every 4’. I bolted a 2x2 level across from the uni-strut and then screwed some self tapping screws to the uni-strut. It was easy to do by yourself plus the threaded rod made it easy to adjust.

    Great idea! I used your design in my garage. Only difference, I used 3/4" plywood cut to 4" strips for the uprights and made use of a bunch of used 2 X 4s that were left over from the construction of the garage addition. I had to paint them to cover the ugly. Thanks for the inspiration.

    What? No load testing? After your miter station drawer test, I was waiting to see you lie across the shelves. I like how you used 2x2's vs 2x4's. It reduces weight and bulk keeping the look minimalistic.

    I built these shelves in my garage except I modified the design to have 2 shelves on one wall and 3 shelves on another wall. Regardless of the number of shelves you build, I would HIGHLY recommend using 4" wood lag bolts to secure the 2x2 to the ceiling. Wood screws will just pull out with the weight. Also, rather than using 2x2's to strap to the ceiling, I used 2x4's to beef it up a bit

    • @dtrrtd774
      @dtrrtd774 Před 7 lety +2

      Commercial overhead storage kits use things like angle iron for the supports, with long lag screws to secure to the ceiling joists. The load limit is mostly from the ceiling joists, stated to be about 600 lbs for the heavy duty units. If the use of lumber is a worry, maybe use safety cable as backup just in case it somehow lets go, holding it up long enough to clear the area.

    Just completed three of these shelves following this video. Some personal learnings:
    1. Any benefits of ripping the 2x2 from the 2x4 are lost when you need to do it w a circular saw.
    2. Much easier when you are mounting perpendicular to your rafters. One of mine was parallel and I had to adjust for a deeper shelf.
    3. Make sure to use at least 3" screws to account for the drywall. (A no brainer, but I got mostly done w 2.5" before realizing I was trusting the shelves to not come crashing down on my car to only a quarter inch of the screw in the rafters.)

    Those Redwing handles on all those drawers are pretty sweet. But the shelves were great! Theres nothing better than putting wasted space to good use! Awesome video with very good editing!

    Nice work Jay. I did the same thing in my garage but I used chains hanging from eye bolts screwed into my rafters rather than the 2X4 hangers.

    "Close-enough" and "sort-of-accurate" are some of my favorite measuring techniques for quickie projects. Great video work and the tiny gems of humor really make the entire experience a lot of fun. Your editing in and of itself highlights the projects, too.Bravo!👍🏼

    Video well done. It was enjoyable to watch.......not a lot of wasted time rambling on and on over something obvious or watching repeated steps.

    Good idea and one I expect to duplicate in our garage. Looks like you could put a couple of hooks on the underside of the new shelf and hang you ladder on it. That would free up more shelf space on the top of your cabinets.
