- Pouring rain so hard with no overpass or open boxcar for rainy weather protection until I later found a open plug door boxcar to seek shelter in but by then time I located it until the rain stopped, go figure! haha!

Sucks im just now finding out about this guy one day after his passing. He was a local to me!! I could have helped him being a local to Kingsport myself. I knew right where he was at on that hill by domtar. Crazy that all this time i missed out on knowing him. I really like his channel so far

Rube Clayton sure is a good ole friend Shoestring. I got a kick out of him. Being from Kentucky myself, I love to hear country boys talk and their sweet hearts. Awful glad that he came and picked you up, so you could get a good, long time of sleep and rest. It was cool listening to him talk about you two knowing one another so long, and seeing his tattoos. Shoestring is the true GODFATHER of hoboing. I ride but nowhere near shoestring. He knows more about yards and catchouts than any other "rider" I know. Thank you to Shoestring and Rube for this video! What a couple of amazing guys. Makes me think of my Papaw, who retired from driving a truck and was obsessed with trains. He hung out down at "the railroad" every day, just talking with workers and watching the trains come and go. He was one of a kind; the perfect grandfather, and I miss him every day. He was known as "Red Dog", and if you were lucky enough to have met him you'd never forget him. He would have loved this channel.

I give you a lot of credit for braving the elements to make these riding videos. I did 43 years in railroad service conducting and braking in all kinds of weather. Been wet, cold, hot, etc but I enjoyed it never the less. You take care, glad that you're feeling better.

Man let me tell you, if ever I needed someone to plug for me, say in court, or anywhere, it'd be this man Rube!!!! Once he gotta going on Ole Mark being the king of the rails, man, there was no stopping him, them words was coming out so fast and true, my ears got outa breath trying to keep up with him!! I used to live in Eugene, Oregon and we had a big yard there and I met many great people who rode the rails. As a teenager we got into a boxcar pushing up to the hub just for fun and that was our right of passage. But we never rode the rails but we loved all the men who did ❤️

When you talk about how being by the tracks is your heaven, I get that 100%. There's a sense of peace and contentment to be found while waiting with one's thoughts for a ride down the line.

Great Video, Hobo History. Ya''ll ought to make a documentary of the old riders and share with the people today, what is was like say back in the 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, to 1990's. There was a guy or guys up here in Seattle that'd ride trains. I don't know why but they'd start small fires in the boxcars. One day my wife and I were waiting on a train pass when we saw one burning, small plooms of smoke coming out of the door. This happened for a year or more. Many theories were that the folks riding the train would light them for heat. It was eventually suspected as pure arson. Small fires hundreds of miles apart but closer to Seattle & Portland. Then it all eventually stopped, just like that.
Anyhow stay safe Shoestring.
@Dan Bell just pure badness I guess. I personally didn't and still don't believe the theory that it was for heat. There never seemed to have been significant damage reported that I can recall but still. Cardboard and all wood burning in the corner of a boxcar is pretty suspicious.
Random boxcars burned up. Smoking and charred debris from what I remember.
Ya say was it only box cars that was burned?
@@glenvillesmall8684 As far as I remember yes. These trains would pull in with a random boxcar smouldering. It was around 2009 or thereabouts. Pretty sure it was always opened boxcars.
Just stopped. No more mention of it again.
Next best thing to being there. Surround sound watching this video. I live next to the CSX near Corbin, KY and a heavy came by rumbling and shaking the house as Shoestring’s video was rolling.
Have you travelled through Corbin much? The yard here is a ghost town compared to its former years.
For those that are looking for southern culture, it does not get any more pure than Rube.
