  • Gear review: Satellite Communication Bivy Stick ⤵️
    I only recommend products I use myself (A D). The @bivy has been a key part of my safety while hiking and camping out of service for the last few months. The Bivy Stick does not have a screen on the device itself but works alongside their mobile app, so to utilize all the features you will need a phone. I film everything on my phone so this was ideal for me to save money vs. buying a device that has a screen. Features:
    🆘 SOS button: this works even if your phone breaks or battery dies. Hold the button on the device for 3 seconds and Global Rescue will be notified with your exact location and send a local rescue team.
    💬 MESSAGING: All plans give you unlimited check in messages to pre-set contact(s). On top of that, depending on which plan you choose, you can text as you would with your phone, out of cell service, to anyone.
    🗺️ MAPS: You can download a detailed map of an area with trails
    🌦️ WEATHER FORECASTS: It shows upcoming weather in the area which is really important to me for snow and rain
    🪶 LIGHTWEIGHT: it’s really lightweight at only 3.35 oz. For comparison Garmin InReach mini is 3.5 oz and Zoleo is 5.3 oz.
    💵 COST: The Bivy Stick is one of the more affordable options out there. $300 for the device and the monthly subscription has no activation fee so you can cancel for the months not in use. The lowest plan is $15/month. For comparison, the Garmin InReach Mini 2 is $450 right now + the monthly plan.
    🔋 BATTERY LIFE: I put my phone in airplane mode to preserve the charge. I always bring a power bank to charge my phone at the end of the day and every 4 days I charge the Bivy if I have 24/7 tracking on.
    🇺🇸 And it’s made in the USA

    You never know what can happen. It's better to have it and not need it vs needing it and not having it. Looks like it does all sorts of stuff too. Be safe and enjoy.

    I just finished EMT school and my professor worked as a flight medic for many years. She said that if you have the money getting helicopter insurance is worth the investment(for those in the US without free healthcare). Most of the time if you need a med helicopter transport health insurance won’t cover it. With helicopter insurance, it covers you if you need a helicopter ride to a hospital so you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket. It’s around $100 a year for coverage and for hiking remotely like this where if you get injured you’re most likely going to be transported via helicopter I would say it’s a good thing to have.

      @JacquelineUnderwood Před rokem +8

      @@STPEH1the insurance isn’t necessary when medical costs don’t cost an arm, leg, and your firstborn child if they aren’t covered by insurance (which is only mildly less expensive at an arm and a leg)

    I think something like isn’t even an extra but a necessity. Kids, young people who do a lot of outdoor travels, tell your parents about this because we will gladly buy you it and pay for the monthly fees. Most of us just don’t know what’s available like this that could literally save our kids life.

    I had a Bivy stick and wanted to love it, but it wasn't reliable for me. I either had the darnedest time connecting to a satellite, or when I did have a signal, my contacts wouldn't get my message for hours and hours. My sister once thought I had been hiking on Mt St Helens until 1am, and I had sent her a message that I made camp at 7pm. 😬 It also randomly activated Global Rescue twice when I was kayaking and not touching it, although the response from Global Rescue was immediate, and they were very professional and efficient when speaking to my husband 😅 I ended up getting an inreach and it's always worked perfectly. I used the emergency feature once when I pulled a muscle on Rainier and couldn't finish my planned route, and the garmin folks got a park ranger to meet me without issue. I'm relieved I had the garmin and not the bivy stick that day 😕

    Hi, first time follower but avid climber, tramper and camper. I carry a Garmin GPS SOS 67i. Great little unit for location, and texting when nothing else work. For peace of mind I subscribe to Garmin insurance for high altitude pickup. All features bundled into a small unit. Pays to check it out.

    Many of us remember that camping ALWAYS meant you were on your own. Cell phones and satcoms really haven't been around very long.
    Carrying someone out on a litter while one runner went ahead to bring help was why camping just 40 years ago, meant you went out in a part of four to six.

    Solo hiking and camping with no cell service is not dangerous. You young people have no concept of what danger is. Working the log drive in the 1920s was dangerous. Trapping alone in the Klondike in the 1980s was dangerous. Hiking and camping alone anywhere in Canada in the 21st century is not dangerous.
