The simplicity design has some charm, not going to lie. But I'm only saying this as a commenter from 2024 looking at boxart from the 80s. I don't think any of these boxart would have gotten my attention back in the days.
Not gonna lie, when I saw the thumbnail, my first thought was it's from AVGN channel. Gotta love that old Christmas series of him blasting poor vg artworks, rewatching it now and then. And boy, who had came up with that MS checkered boxes idea? It looks something that belongs to school, not to after it.
The title is confusing...it says worst, but you lead off with Pro Wrestling, which is clearly among the finest pieces of video game art ever created. How else is one expected to put one's self in a headlock, if not by removing one's own head?
The Sega Master System, though a beloved console, had its fair share of poorly designed box arts. Here are some of the most notoriously bad ones!
paperboy and vigilante were fine
Agree

paperboy is not that bad
About on par with the cover for the NES verison.
I dunno, Outrun is kinda cool

I actually find It a good strategy because we literally don't know what to expect from the games, can we imagine Sonic covers designed like those? XD
Black Belt is appalling, like how was this ugly foot green lit? Now I'm curious to know If there's a story behind all these terrible covers.

Some of these are such low effort
It's strange that I don't recall drawing these box arts. 😅
Anyway, the console was great despite the lack of effort in these designs.
black belt
That took literally 9 second to draw
On the other hand, the covers from Japan are masterpieces
I could listen to this song all day! Also, the box art didn't look that bad _at the time_. Looking back now, however, those are horrible.
I like these...simple yet effective :)
Zillion is awesome
Paperboy is good. Game and cover. And about the list, pure Master System rule: if the cover is lame, the game inside is awesome.
Paper boy isn't too bad. Compared to all the others on this list its a work of art. Vigilante is the next best one.
They look British.
(I'm British)

Its laughable but at least it didnt get you hopes up. Im looking at you deadly towers on the nes 😂
Atrocious
No wonder the Master System failed miserably against the NES......
If you judge the console from the game cover...
