What RUINED Dead Rising?

- You know, it's surprises me that I haven't talked about dead rising up until now because it wasn't the first 7th gen game I played, but it was definitely the first one I heard about. Once one of Capcom's hottest new intellectual property, now just a relic of a previous age. So what happened? How did a groundbreaking, hot selling franchise fall so far, and eventually be forgotten? How did Dead Rising die? Well join me today as we take a look at what ruined dead rising.

I think looking at the DR1 story as just a "consumerism = bad" theme is a little reductive. I like the idea of it being a theme of "how much can man push mother nature before she pushes back". Santa Cabeza was described as being "blessed with nature" and was entirely destroyed by the US govt and swept under the rug purely because man pushed a little too far with their experiments on cattle.
In general I felt the overview of DR 1's narrative on this focused on the surface level, I personally love it for what it is. Besides it's not metal gear, the story serves the premise well and the sequel feels like it disregarded some stuff from 1 in favor of doing it's own thing entirely which created a bit of disconnect between entries moreso than the passing of development to a mostly different team did.
@chandllerburse737The US government was conducting experiments in a more natural untouched part of the world because they wanted to take advantage of the local wasp's unique characteristics.
They were trying to play god for their own means, fucked it up, killed everyone to cover up their mess, and someone who not only cared deeply about his home and people but the earth as a whole saw it as a crime that the US needed to answer for.
The earth cannot realistically fight back in this case, but Carlito had many reasons to do what he did and justify it in his mind and one of them was definitely the idea that governments abuse and take advantage of things in nature in unnatural ways to achieve their own selfish goals for problems they create.
@chandllerburse737 Carlito caused the outbreak because the US govt covered up their own accidents and claimed drug traffickers led to Santa Cabeza's destruction. Isabella spells that part out. Consumerism isn't really the issue, it's greed and gluttony that are the issue. The 2 mandatory psycho fights are corrupt food purveyors that will go to extreme lengths to keep their business going for a reason.
The story is one of my favorites and I find it horrifically dark especially after Day 2
@chandllerburse737 Is it not possible for Carlito to act as an agent for Mother Nature?

Nothing felt better in Dead Rising 1 than unlocking the REAL Mega Blaster. Made the game go from daunting to easy. However, unlocking it was a real pain in the read, but man, when you did it, it truly felt like a reward. I miss games that gave you some off-the-wall crazy rewards that you really felt like you worked for.
Wasn't that the achievement where you had to drive back and forth through the parking lot to kill over 50k zombies?
@@JohnKowalskyDrive Yes, and it was tedious and awful, but you know what? When I unlocked that Mega Blaster, it felt like it was worth it! LOL
@@jringlebhow about unlocking the actual laser sword which was damn near impossible back then for me because of the red ring of death on my Xbox but damn did it feel good to use both shame they didn’t keep those for DR2
What gets me about the newer games is that the bosses lose some of the humanity that was present in older fights. Characters like Cliff, Ted and Adam make you feel for them. Cliff was a Vietnam vet who regressed to his old war days after seeing his granddaughter die. Ted is someone who was taken advantage off and insulted his entire life, so when everything went to shit the only thing he could do is take care of the one thing in his life that made him happy, being Snowflake. Adam was a performer for children who watched his audience get torn to shreds, and all he wanted was to keep the ride going because it repelled the zombies. They felt real, for all the ridiculous mechanics and costumes, you could sympathize with alot of these people and understand why they went insane the way they did. You can imagine so many of them as just normal people before their outbreaks.
But even in DRM 3 that starts to wane out. Having the 7 deadly sins as bosses is a neat idea, but instead of taking the place of Brandon or Randy as the psychos who were clearly awful before the outbreak, they replace the heartfelt ones that made Dead Rising feel special and real. Outside of maybe Jherri and Wong, the psychopaths in this game all feel like they were terrible from the beginning. They don't feel like real people. Even the ones you can sympathize with act like caricatures of the sin they represent. Then the rest of the games bosses are just awful people as well.
Dead Rising 4 doesn't even try outside of one line saying Scare King was a schoolteacher which props for trying with one of them I guess.
I feel like that if they were to phase out sympathetic bosses, throw in some actually physically monstrous stuff like in RE to provide more variety to it. Like imagine fighting a Tyrant in Dead Rising.
I never liked the 7 deadly sins idea. Between DR1&2 we get roughly 20+ Psychopaths. So for DR3 only having 7 made it feel lackluster.
@@austinreed7343Imagine Mr. X in DEADRISING! 🤯😱
@@frankkennedy6388 You know DR3 has psychopaths other than the 7 deadly sin right?
Even with the survivors it was like this. Leah from the first game watched her baby get ripped apart by zombies while she cried and screamed. Dead Rising really make you stop giving a shit about survivors after 3.
Dead Rising 4 is like a Netflix adaptation

All you had to say was "zombies on a cruise ship" and my mind started racing. A game where you're trapped on a zombie infested super-cruise ship (think Titanic but more video-gamey). The electronics are destroyed and the passengers and crew are either (un)dead or trapped (survivors to save).
You can't call for help and you're chugging towards Major CIty. Throughout the game you're choosing tasks against the time limit, trying to fix the radio to call for help or get the ship in running order so you can steer away from the city, or even go full sacrificial hero and try to find a way to sink the ship yourself (bam, multiple endings and replayability). The survivors you can find and save will be able to help reaching certain goals that line up with their way of thinking.
It could be so fun, and very tense since most of it would be in tight hallways and rooms.
RE Gaiden and Revelations already did it. Capcom loved that idea so much they used it twice.
Thrice, actually. Dead Aim, too.
Unlock shortcuts, by de-activating the emergency system that shuts of the elevators, giving you a way to directly connect two floors.
Maybe the conspiracy this time could be about how the cruise ship was secretly involved in weapons and drug trafficking (happened in the real world, and could be used as explanation why there is one area with a ton of weapons to unlock) and this time they were secretly trying to bring zombie bees over the border, only for a leek to happen.
The reason why we must wait 3 days for emergency services to arrive, is that it is standard protocol to plan the liberation of Z-infested areas or that there has been some sort of sabotage of the emergency systems by the captain to cover up the crime and get his private getaway plan going.
This might work
so resident evil revelations....lol
I personally love the Off The Record version of Chuck. Shows the “what if” of us not getting enough Zombrex and overall gives me the vibe of one of the boss battles from the first game.
44:40 your theory is say is half right. As detailed in Matt McMuscle’s video covering Dead Rising 4, Capcom Vancouver was getting fatigued of doing Dead Rising games and nothing else yearning for something new to work on. However, Capcom kept turning down every pitch that wasn’t a Dead Rising game (such as a reboot of Dino Crisis). So when the team knew they’d have to make DR4 they decided to take the franchise in a whole new direction modeling the structure and tone after The Last of Us.
The problem is they hadn’t asked Capcom’s permission to take this direction, fearing thetd be shot down. So they decided they'd just change course and were hoping they’d be forgiven later… Capcom wasn't forgiving.
Capcom essentially told the Vancouver team to start from scratch while keeping the 2016 deadline meaning they had a very crunched development, and had to use whatever they could patchwork from the old version to make the deadline
1. Capcom did not approve of CV's other pitches because they were either way too ambitious and expensive for what the company had already proved themselves capable of or the other Capcom titles they pitched ideas for seemed like a bad call. They wanted to make ANOTHER Resident Evil action game after 6, which capcom wanted to let simmer as they considered a new direction for the series to eventually give us 7, and also they suggested a dino crisis game yes. However given Capcom themselves had no consistent identity for the series in mind since every previous game was so different they figured handing the IP off to CV wouldn't provide fruitful results.
Former CV staff have gone on record to say a majority of CV's failings were on IT'S management and they didn't blame Capcom JPN being weary on letting the company do whatever they want since they did waste a lot of money Capcom was already budgeting for them.
2. As for the Last of Us inspiration, that was not a natural direction the devs decided on it was heavily influenced by Microsoft wanting a direct competitor with what Sony were doing and saw dead rising as their toy to play with.
@@Shift_Salt I forgot about Microsoft’s hand in the whole thing sorry about that
@@skibot9974 that's fine, some details are inevitably going to fall to the wayside but yeah in general the reason CV fell were because of it's own management. Yes capcom contributed by being super hands off when they shouldn't have, but the fact many at CV were just schmoozing whichever companies would give them more money shows they didn't have the best intentions for the series, the company, or those working under them.
@@Shift_Salt It's worth mentioning that Capcom nearly launched RE 7 as a live-service game with microtransactions.
This is pretty spot on, the team really wanted to branch out. Then Microsoft started to get heavily involved in Dead Rising 3 and wanted the game to be darker and more mature to compete with the Last of Us. Microsoft wanted Dead Rising 4 to go even further in that direction and pretty much completely strip away Dead Risings identity and just turn it into a TLOU clone. When Capcom JPN finally saw this direction they flipped and so the team had to quickly cobble together the Dead Rising 4 that we got. This kinda proves that Microsoft never understood what made Dead Rising so appealing to its fans.
I will never get tired of the corny one liners from Frank and Chuck.
It has the same vibe as old school RE4 with Leon.
So a couple of ideas I had for future DR:
1. Instead of a literal time limit, it could have a sort of functional limit by not respawning items. Once you've picked up a particular weapon or food in a given spot, it's gone. This can add a more risk/reward factor to combo weapons as you're essentially sacrificing 2 items in exchange for one.
2. Instead of a single sandbox environment, there could be a road trip type of plot where the protagonist is traveling across country, stopping at different cities. This could bring back some form of linear game design philosophy depending on how each town is designed.
1) Is basically infinite mode from DR1. I think the time pressure is crucial to the series and what they should've tried is making the narrative non linear and not requiring as strict a sequence- i.e. there should've been multiple paths and multiple versions of the same "event" based on when it was encountered. Force people to split and miss leads/abandon survivors on a 1st playthrough, but on a new game plus it can be 100%'d. They just have to be sure to communicate this in tooltips on loading screens and the tutorial section. Some "scheduling" mode could've been nice, too by estimating player travel times when selecting objectives in the map (would help knowing when to reload a save). Allow people to save route markers for pickups, preferred paths to reduce time in the ui.
2) The differently themed sections of the mall are meant to be that "variety", but if they really wanted to rationalize different motifs... I don't think a road trip is necessarily a big enough leap. It'd be really ambitious, but awesome if they could pull off a multi-protag narrative that jumps around the world, showcasing how responses to the outbreak differ across nations and the layouts of the crowded entertainment, commerce sectors across the world could be a lot more extreme and still make "sense" (i.e. america could have the pentagon mall, china could have a sectioned off block of street vendors and mixed retail/residential space like Sleeping Dogs, etc.
One thing they absolutely need to bring back are the actual Psychopath bosses, not just slightly buffed enemies with slightly better weapons.
The story gets absolutely wild at 0:58 💀

Immediate brain dead moment when u called the dead rising original writing as bad
This franchise deserves a comeback
I think we’ll have to wait for the bad taste to be washed out of people’s mouths from 3 & 4, though reviving some other IPs that Dead Rising was seen as “stealing attention from” would help the bad taste go away faster. Of course, in a new Vs. Game, some representation is possible but it’s probably more in the tier of something like Breath of Fire, Power Stone, or even Captain Commando in terms of priority. An idea I had for a revival, which people would probably not like, would be a hard reboot with a much darker tone but the same gameplay, set firmly in the same universe as Resident Evil, giving us more enemy variety than zombies and the odd maniacs. Imagine Frank West fighting Lickers and Tyrants…
So does Viewtiful Joe but we know it’s not going happen

That series at least didn’t leave a bad taste in people’s mouths.
What a surprise a remaster is coming.
Dr1's story is amazing. ESPECIALLY the dialogue. Its not meant to be great, it's meant to be a b tier zombie movie. Its an infection caused by bees, genetically modified in a lab to help with beef production. Get into the cheese of it all.
Never expected you to make a Dead Rising content, hope you'll make more
I grew up playing the Dead Rising games, it broke my heart seeing its downfall. I played the first game when I was 6, probably shouldn't have been playing it, but it became one of my favorite games ever. This game series caused me to meet an amazing friend online and eventually see them irl years later, all because he asked me to play DR2 one day. This franchise means so much to me, I wish Capcom would reboot the series someday.
How you feeling today mate?😊
@Nebulous_Luna Today was insane, I can't believe it actually happened lol. So excited to play the remaster when it comes out 😄
So ignoring DR 4 and the generally sad ending to the series, i think it's pretty admirable that the first 3 were unique in their own way and carried along certain core elements of the franchise. The fact that each one had it's own "feeling" and style is pretty cool. But man this video unlocked the memory of playing Dead Rising 1 on my crappy TV and not knowing what the hell any of the text said, on top of that seeing so many zombies on screen at once blew me away!
DR needs a soft reboot. I’ve always thought a DR set on a cruise ship would be amazing. you’ve got shopping malls , dining halls, casinos, hotels, kitchens and the engine room. There’s so much potential! Weather could even play a factor, rough seas, heavy rain, wind. It writes itself!

I must remind you that it almost started as a Last of Us-inspired game, but CV did not want to make more DR games before & after DR3...
Capcom tends to lock away it's franchises and almost never looks back. It happened with Darkstalkers, it happened with Megaman (of which needed a lot of encouragement and an aniversary, before being locked back up in the capcom vault), it happened with Street Fighter until 2008. Don't expect anything from Dead Rising any time soon.

Love your content man, keep up the great work.
What’s funny is that I just started replaying the series a few days before this vid came out😂😂it’s like whenever we start to think about a game that hasn’t been talked about in awhile someone makes a vid on it
The lack of real frank west and missing the timer were my biggest issues with DR4. DR 1-3 at least had some coherence
Just finished a replay of 1. One of my favorite games ever. Side note, the queen collection bit is a breeze of you make a NECTAR effect smoothie with only orange juice. Makes a queen appear upon drinking and ups spawn rates. Smoothie mechanic is introduced day 1 where you find Kent the photographer. In the kitchen of that restaurant is the first smoothie info card you find introducing you to the mechanic
I wanted to comment on this too when this video first released. The smoothie mechanics are pretty busted in the first 2 games. You can make most of the boss fights in 2 pathetically easy by making painkillers. Then again he did admit it was his first time playing these games to the end.

Dead Rising is still my favorite video game of all time with my favorite Video game protagonist of all time, the simple everyman who’s covered wars… Frank West. I love the simplicity of what is presented but how deep it goes within the simplicity. The characters, story, gameplay, VA, music, psychopath bosses, and general mechanics just work great for me.
I did have issues with the survivors when I was younger but nowadays they’re easy to guide and help. I don’t think Otis is annoying because you don’t have to answer the radio in the middle of a crowd of Zombies, find a safe place and then answer it, still don’t understand how hard that is. I once relied on OP weapons to guide me through like Adam’s chainsaw but now I just like to have fun with the malls simple weapons given, and I once couldn’t even get through the second case but nowadays it’s one of my favorite stories to go through.
I still feel the general reputation for DR is how funny it is but that’s surface level, yes you can be a servbot wearing women’s clothes wacking zombies with a mall bench but the game is genuinely dark once you get into it with some plot elements that rival reality for me. One of my favorite things about it is how Frank goes from some snark looking for a scoop to realizing the severity of the situation so well that by the first nights end he’s more focused on what happened there and saving the people inside, the story basically takes a backseat to this crazy situation. By day 3 so much has happened and the situation is dire with the military that he doesn’t even raise his camera to take any pictures, at that point he has what he needs and is ready to get the hell out! Consumerism is simple but like the rest of the game I think it really goes deeper if you care
The sequels may have added fan favorite things like Combo weapons, funnier things to do, Co-op, mini games, and what was originally more universal for people to play but nothing beats the original for me. Off the Record was my favorite for some time but overtime I began poking holes in both DR2 and OTR I didn’t like; from the story, most of the characters, the scaled back gameplay, simplified zombies, blurry textures, lame gore, meh villains (TK is cool), and the mostly bland psychopaths it just doesn’t hit has good as the first for me. Here we stand opposite and that’s fine but I find DR2 extremely cliche in terms of story. I like framed stories but the concept here transfer well to me compared to OTR
It’s not a bad game by far and I still love playing it to this day but for me compared to the first it is not on the same level. To make this long comment short I never had many issues with DR3 and actually liked most of what the game had to offer besides the Psychopaths being jerks more than their name, very little challenge to it, and a meh set of villains for the story.
DR4 is not only a bad rushed betrayal of a game just like another fourth title in an originally beloved series (SR) but the main issue with that game for me is how Boring it is. I’ve never been more bored in a zombie game let alone third person action game like I was in DR4 hanging out with imposter West and his awful writing and bad VA. Personally sometimes I wish Blue Castle games just never touched the series and Capcom either left it at the first or continued to make it in house. Yes they did probably expose the series to a wider audience but the second it was exposed it began to fail
Many want the series to make a comeback or something but I’m happy with it being over and done with. Even with my issues with how the two sequels dealt with things I still enjoy them and I’ll always have the solid first game to return to like I do almost every single year. A full remake maybe for the 20th anniversary made in house by capcom would be cool but as it stands, it functions on modern generations for me to keep with me most likely forever so I’m content and happy with it.
the stories in these games are interesting when you bear in mind that they're japanese developers satirizing america. there's novelty, fun, and even some value in seeing your culture viewed from the perspective of another
I wonder how they would've handled Canadian culture...which I think both Canada & Japan have similar cultures...
Really cool video! But just to clarify, Case Zero and Case West are backwards compatible on Xbox One and Series S/X, so thankfully they're not trapped on the 360.
I personally believe Dead Rising should come back someday. Capcom just needs to learn from the mistakes that were made in Dead Rising 4.
fun fact: Capcom and many other Japanese companies gave their IPs to western developers or changed their formula inorder to apeal more to overseas fans. It was mainly due to negetive reaction they got from western game journolist and game reviewers who would mock japanese games for bein "wierd wacky japanese game" most notably the G4 "japan skit{" and Phill Fish mocking japanese game developers in a panel (right in their face)
I think that is the case for God Hand, but another reason why was that CAPCOM’s games in general weren’t selling well, with Shadow of Rome, Dead Rising’s precursor, bombed.
Keiji Inafune was hotly upset by the failure in the first place…
Though the “Weird Japanese” shlock wasn’t in CAPCOM’s mind since most of their games were Western-inspired…
I do think they could try again, this time being much more strict on the devs. Would be a good way to churn out more C-tier and below games.

One of DR4s biggest nails in the coffin for me was the obnoxious Christmas setting. The whole game being christmas themed makes it so weird to see outside of december.
Upon watching the ending of DR1 for the first time, my only thoughts was as follows: "What happens next?" It certainly made it all confusing and somewhat ominous with a red message that appears at that point. I was hyped for the sequel instantly. I had to be patient of course. And when it happened, when DR2 was shown to the world, my desire to know more intensified. I devoured these two games more than I can admit.
I loved the first one. Liked the 2nd. 3rd was playable. 4th... bought it, but played 5 mins & was over it.

What I liked about dead rising 2 is that it creates a perfect balance between making the gameplay fun and giving you choices that reflect later on during the game, i remember stumbling across the ted and his tiger, at first i beat both of them but on my second playthrough i had no idea you could tame his tiger
Dead Rising 1 has a lot of that too, Kent and Paul are good examples of how you handle the scenario changes it. And even smaller things like with Jo killing her hostages one by one if you leave the area without fighting her immediately.
Hell yeah!!!!! I was craving one of your background vids to enjoy while working today!! Thanks brother
The biggest contribution to DR4 turning out as bad as it was is that the devs had to restart development. From my understanding, the dev studio had been making a completely different game when they were supposed to be making DR4, and were doing it without Capcom's approval. Apparently they were sick of just making the same game over and over again. I think they were hoping that Capcom would sign off on their new ideas when they found out, but that's not how things panned out. Instead, Capcom made them scrap the entirety of the game they were making instead of DR4, and ordered them to start over making DR4 without giving them any additional time or resources to finish it. Which is why so much was missing from the game: they didn't have the time or budget. There's a video on it called "Dead Rising 4 - What Happened?" from a channel called Matt McMuscles that I learned all this from. It's worth checking out if you're interested in more details on the game.
One small critique with the video. If you are doing a whole video on a certain series I don’t think it would have been that big of a deal to spoil the endings to the last 2 games. Just my opinion
Yeah, he showed chuck in 3 and Annie being revealed as Katey was the big twist of the game, so it makes no sense for him to blur it out. Also most people that watched this are fans of the series anyway, so it's very strange of him to do that.
I can't lie, I was actually looking forward to Dead Rising 4 when it was first announced. The fact had Frank West in Willamette again, and being able to explore the whole city, rather than just the mall had me stoked. It's a shame the game came out as a disappointment.
Frank's back
Though there’s still a 10% chance this kills the franchise for good.
@@austinreed7343 I don't care , mainly because ....its not like capcom knew what they were doing with it , inafune didn't even know that's why he handed it off the blue castle who made two entertaining(keyword , entertaining not good or great or amazing quality just entertaining ) sequels and when it came time to make a 4th , the crew that was stlll there dropped the ball so hard that the ball is dug into the earth , I view this as just "hey let's re do frank's first adventure " I don't expect them to make 5 or something or redo 4 ,I at very most would think they'd like to redo 2 and 3 just so people can play those again on modern hardware using controls that didn't feel dated when the game came out(one of my core problems with DR as a franchise ) but otherwise ...I'm cool with this zombie remaining dead .
Rebecca didn't deserve to die. Rebecca and the protagonist interact the most, the scene is also more, a variety of outside to help the protagonist, is really beautiful. Stacey never leaves the safe house, doesn't advance the plot, looks normal, if you have to die, Stacey should die. Rebecca risked everything, and even if you don't let her be with the main character, you can't kill her. otr inside is also used as a money tool, the plot does not count
Dead rising on a cruise ship I have literally thought of for years, I would love that, being completely isolated in the ocean and you have to survive for however many days until you reach land, a ton of colorful and silly things to do and use on the boat. Perfect setting
Dead Rising 3 was the start. Dead Rising 4 killed it and the idiots behind it
Unfortunately, the "idiots" did not want to make more DR games...as they want to helm forgotten legacy titles, as well as brand-new IPs...
Bruh I was just looking into getting the dead rising remasters at the end of last month and now you drop a video about the series? Man some coincidences lol.
DR3 is best played in Nightmare mode. Still nowhere near as challenging as previous games but it is possible to come close to death sometimes. Especially fun in co-op, you can hit and knock your friends over but do no damage, even when using explosives. I saved my friend from being eaten by zombies with grenade spam, the blasts got him far enough away from danger to quickly heal. It's also really fun going to that boxing gym and having kickboxing matches with your mates in the ring with a zombie crowd coming to watch
Intro hit me with a flashbang, that's crazy.
Hi, first, I want to say I love the video. Second, I know some things about this downfall, mainly as I learned and researched a lot about these games. Dead Rising 2 first began development at Capcom before Blue Castle Games joined the project, In fact, many of the characters, setting, and ideas first came from Capcom themselves. For example, Chuck Greene was made by Capcom but was initially known as Chuck Reid, a smokejumper in his mid-40s who, as opposed to in his early 30s like we see him in the final. This was changed to a motocross superstar as they felt Chuck being a smokejumper would make him too over the top and not make him feel like an everyman. There are other changes, such as it takes place 5 years after Dead Rising 1 in the final game, which was supposed to be 20 years. While Blue Castle didn't make many original ideas for Dead Rising 2, they did add to them, like the multiplayer was supposed to be in the first Dead Rising, and Capcom wanted it in the second game Blue Castle added a lot to that. They also created combo weapons inspired by a Canadian TV series called The Red Green Show, where people would use duct tape to fix or combine things. Capcom still helped develop the second game and DLCS as a co-developer. Case Zero was supposed to be a part of the main game but was cut for pacing issues and was used to help hype up the base game. Case West was made because the fans were sad about Frank West's absence, and they decided to fix that. It should also be noted those DLCS were made with a part of the game's budget and took at least six months each. Dead Rising 3 was supposed to be released in 2012 on Xbox 360 and PS3, but the game suffered technical issues. Microsoft came in to fund the project and give it another year if the game was released on Xbox One only. They also made a lot of changes to the game. They made them drop the DLCS of Frank West and Chuck Greene to focus on the main game. The DLCS would have had Frank team up with the army and Chuck, the police. Chuck's role was much more different as he was a hero continuing his character from 2, but that didn't happen due to the DLC being canceled. This led to the mob boss thing for Chuck, as Capcom still wanted him in the game. Microsoft also made more story and character changes, like how the truck driver Dick (2nd player) and Annie (Katey) were supposed to have bigger roles in the story, and Annie could have been playable too. Microsoft also had Capcom Vancouver provide many accessibility options to make the game accessible to newcomers and aimed at a larger audience. Which is why Dead Rising 3 and 4 were so easy. Dead Rising 4 was supposed to be a series reboot that would have been like TLOU, as Microsoft wanted a game like that. However, Capcom was never informed of the creation, so they hated it and forced them to restart. This brought back Frank West and made the combo mech suit the new big feature; they also had to make the game with the remaining time and budget of the DR X TLOU project, giving them only 18 months. Capcom and Microsoft removed the timer in 4 to make it more accessible. So this is a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff I know about the Dead Rising games; I hope one day we can get a remake of Dead Rising 1 and 2 and have the series rise again.
My favorite fun fact about dead riding 1: the manican torso is THE best weapon in the game
I remember it being really good on Carlito for the first encounter but pretty weak for everything else the fish in the park plaza was also really overpowered too
@@bloopblopglip I took down the stupid clown in 4 swings, never left home without one since lol
@@maniacmatt7340 whenever I fought Adam the clown I'd just shoot his poison balloons before he could release them for massive damage and than hit him with whatever melee I have till the Stun wears off I really like the Adam fight so I don't really cheese it ever the story fights are what I'm trying to get done as quickly as possible
Wait what
Id say it’s the best weapon until you get the mini chainsaw then it’s the second best weapon
16:44 Honestly, I love the combo weapons, but there's a glaring issue: The spiked bat and knife gloves are so easy to make as soon as you leave the safehouse. These two are very powerful, reliable to make, and otherwise make it easy to ignore the rest of the combo weapons.
I've thought on it, and I think they could have this fixed on any future ports: Have the payday loan shops have a platform where you can place up to 3 items at a time and pay a fee relative to the item. These 3 items will appear in the safehouse, just as you enter on the left to the stairs. This way, players can have a single combo weapon of their choice at hand, plus a third item for half another. Of course, you can only pick items that have a combo symbol. Maybe have a small mission where you save a looter and he puts in a good word for you to his buddies, unlocking the service for that playthrough.
Yeah, that’s an issue I have with 2 and why I think the original dead rising is probably the best. 2 added a lot of really fun and unique weapons (moose head, lance, etc.), but you almost never see people using them instead of just spiked bat, defiler, and knife gloves. Granted, 1 still had a problem similar with triple booking the small chainsaw, but at least there, newer players wouldn’t know to do that and would still use their surroundings. With 2, it’s the entire gimmick, so of course people are going to only use them when they see that they’re way better and easier to obtain than other weapons.
@@FilthyTea Also, the Small Chainsaw is locked behind a boss on the first night, so you have to go a decent time without and then earn it.
The part that sparked my thought was also while I was going through the game on Ps3; The gun that makes gas-zombies' heads explode actually appears from the start of the game in the maintainence tunnels to the North. Making the BFG for more than the last few minutes of the game was an interesting idea, and it seems a shame that for how little ammunition it has, that it can be such a chore to make it. Plus, it's kinda a homage to the first game having the Laser Sword and MegaBuster in the Security Room for new game plus; always thought the little square space as you enter the Emergency Shelter felt empty.
@@Chimeratech_O.D. yeah, when I first found out you can get the bfg early, I thought it was really neat. The first 2 games are really good about rewarding the player for exploration in general (hidden smgs, katana in Colombian Roastmasters, hidden zombrex, etc.). That’s kinda why I’m not a huge fan of 3, it really feels like the only reward you get for exploring in that game is one of the hundreds of collectibles that function the exact same.
man I'm happy found your channel these long form videos are great whenever i am doing other stuff , your voice is made for this .
The main reason dead rising 1 had the allegory of consumerism was an updated take on the allegory from Dawn of the dead though it is much more heavy handed I will admit
Id love a full on remake/maybe a reboot of dr1 by the original team and then a sequel by them, theres just something so special about Dr1, while 2 is great its just missing something, 3 was ok but had no replayablity and i never actually got around to playing 4
Reminder before the Xbox 360 storefront shuts down at the end of the month that Dead Rising 1, 2, and Off The Record are available for only $1.99 each
That Boeing joke was S-Tier
Soooo are we ever gonna address the whole “My sister dated a Klansman” story or we just gonna leave the thread dangling for a while?
There's really nothing to the story, I was nine at the time, and I just stopped seeing him around one day, and I didn't find out why until several years later.
@@TBP All I’m saying is that still sounds like a pretty sick concept to a thriller movie if you ever wanna sell the rights to it.

Just to clarify, at 20:50 you get context from a cutscene if you wait at the main menu for a few minutes just like DR 1. I don't know why they did that, they should have had it play when you hit new game. It does kind of fit I suppose considering these games have always been arcade like.
Sitting at the menu first time and seeing that dr1 cutscene with the mom and daughter had me shook.
@@kgfoster14 children rarely get killed in games, it's a very disturbing cutscene that sets the tone of the game.

This game introduced me to my passion for photography. Now a professional photographer.
If I had a nickle for every time
a franchise killer coincided with a low budget live action movie based on that game franchise, I'd have 2 nickles but it's still weird that it happened twice.
Both Dead Rising and Red Faction had movies released around the same time as the franchise killer.
Huh?
Bruh
Textboxes? There was a post credits cutscene ending for DR3 regarding Isabella that left things unresolved, but uncertain.
I'm talking about the main plot. The Isabella storyline was a side plot.
What a crappy review for the OG Dead Rising
Without the original Dead Rising we wouldn't have the best meme in the series i've covered wars you know
I thought the DLC costumes in DR4 were funny. Having Frank running around wearing Jill Valentine’s tube top and miniskirt gave me a few laughs
that final boss fight in the first dead rising still haunts me to this day.
If you do make a video about franchises that went off the rails with the 4th game, I’d like a follow up of franchises that didn’t fall to that curse.
Power armor in Dead rising 4 i wonder if capcom got that idea from fallout 4
I recognize the story may be stronger in 2, but I hold the gameplay changes that Off the Record introduced such as a sandbox mode in place of TiR and more plentiful money overall make it a generally more polished experience to me. And... well, I admit this is a personal thing: I feel bad being responsible for kids in any game, I cannot handle the stress of taking care of Katy. It's hard to explain...
There's something inside you
It's hard to explain
This is the game that made me buy a hdtv. I couldn't read anything and was getting so frustrated that I broke down and bought one. $300 for a fairly shitty 32 inch but man it made gaming so much better.
I saw someone make a comparison to Saints Row, and the comparison could not be more accurate. The first 2 games take their story relatively seriously, with most of the more comedic stuff coming from the gameplay, side objectives, and the player themselves, and then after that, the 3rd one is still decent but takes itself less seriously, and then finally, the series goes off the deep end, and dies.
You know what this game reminded me of? State of Emergency, a PS2 Rockstar game where you were part of this resistance against a corporation that has taken over your country, somehow, and you gotta go through the mall to different resistance bases doing tasks and fighting through this eternal riot going on in the mall. Weapons, health, all kinds of stuff you just find laying around and your main fight is with mall security who will swarm you And kill you making you go back to the start of the mission or whatever, very frustrating sometimes. Especially on timed ones cuz the rioters keep getting in your way even if you can avoid security. But if you mow em down that's bad too!
Yeah, I never understood why Frank is such a popular protagonist between the fandom. I actually think that Chuck is a better and more interesting protagonist
That “you’re on fire” line was raw as hell I don’t see the issue
tapping the stungun near any atm or slot machine make a decent chunk of cash come right out in both versions of DR2
There has been rumors that Dead Rising may be getting a remake ever since Dead Rising 4 flopped. Only to be strengthened by Resident Evil 2 Remake having Terence James Rotolo aka Frank West voice William Birkin. Since 2019 I've hoped to see Capcom finally announce it. Fingers still crossed.
I'm not sure if having played DR2 first would have prepared you for the most memorable moment of DR1...
YYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! HE AIN'T MY BOY BUT THE BROTHA IS HEAVY!
Dead rising 1-3 was gold. 4 was just Mid , this is why you don't please a new crowd because its going to flop
Easily Dead Rising 4.
I have seen people say DR 3 is their favorite even after playing all the other dead risings
I haven't seen a single person that has played every other game and unironically say "Yeah, dead rising 4 is my favorite".
The map imo was obnoxious to travel in 3 every single road has a blockade you have to navigate around it becomes tedious the Lockers remove any potential difficulty the game has the time limit is so lenient you can complete every side mission that comes up and still wait around for stuff to finally happen so many flaws with the game i never touched 4 so i have no opinion on it but if its as bad as 3 then im staying far away from it
Bait
What OP means by “easily DR4” is a response to the title of the video. They are saying they don’t like DR4.
@@onesaucynougat7471 oh I’m kinda slow lol
@@DeadX2 it’s alr I thought the same thing too at first.
I can sum up what happened in 3 words
Dead Rising Four
Longer version?
Dead Rising 4 was so bad that it got it’s creation studio, Capcom Vancouver, and Dead Rising 5, shut down
Capcom being greedy and wanting to sell the amount that western games sold which led to them outsourcing their games to western developers is what ruined Dead Rising.
As a devil may cry fan, listening to the part where you talk about the awkward call of duty was disheartening, I'm so sorry dead rising bros
We're Alright. The Dead Rising Remastermake looks really damn good
These writers confused Frank West with Johnny Cage in DR4.
You could totally remake or reboot this series. The survival aspect is the most important thing to implement. The games gradually got easier to the point where you are just playing in control and not enjoying it. My favourite thing about 1 and 2 was getting from point A to point B was actually a challenge in itself especially with no checkpoints!
DR4 marketing and was pushing "you will get to kill so many zombies, isn't that fun?
So pushing making it easy to access, specially by removing the timer
An coop based dead rising built for 2 player would be a fresh take in the franchise 👍
Deadrising 2 was the peak of the franchise. They took the weaponize anything and everything mechanic and multiplied it with the combo weapons.
Can't go wrong with the Wolverine boxing gloves

Know what? good luck reaching 100k! Have a sub! haven't heard of this game in ages and now I am very intrigued as to why.
Extremely specific nitpick, but why the hell did Dead Rising 3 used a serif font in it's UI? It has nothing to do with the series visual identity and tone.
It looks scary
Well that's a new term I haven't heard of: "Nadir" as opposed to the more commonly known term "Zenith" it seems they are literally the polar opposites of each other thanks for bringing up awareness to the term by saying it at 37:06
Playing dead rising 4 is like carrying 2 CRT’s up a set of stairs (I think that’s what those TV’s are called)
