As I’m watching, the first thing that came to mind is

“95% every human that we see was not born in a New York hospital!”
That wasn’t the case when we grew up.
New York was a magical city when it was populated with true New Yorkers.
True New Yorkers didn’t have to be born here.
But when they got here they had to become New Yorkers.
It was impossible to remain who you were in your previous town if you came to live here.

    • @liamcragin
      @liamcragin Pƙed 20 dny +2

For those who don’t know this is Midtown South. It’s a notoriously sketchy part of the city (and has been for as long as I remember) if you’re not street smart, especially late at night and of course it’s going to be empty at 2 am on a weekday when everybody is at home sleeping. This part of the city is all offices and retail - during the day it’s full of commuters and tourists but nobody lives there besides the homeless so it’s empty at night during the week. Most of New York is not like this and this neighborhood is wall to wall people during the day.

You have my appreciation for the work you do, making cities accessible to us, from the comfort of our computer area's. I have never been to NYC but have heard about it all my life. At 62 I am moving with my daughter from West Palm Beach, Florida to the suburbs outside of Chicago. I grew up in the Southeast of the USA. Learning about the North of the USA has been SO interesting to me. I look forward to experiencing the true change of seasons. Everything seems older in NYC as compared to South Florida. People love the idea of living near the ocean. I moved to Palm beach county back when the Miami Vice tv show was popular. I remember seeing on the weather channel that it was cooler there than in Alabama. What I have since learned is the power of HUMIDITY and SUN intensity which cannot be seen in pictures or on video. Experiencing the combination for 40 years has worn me down. Good luck to all the people moving to Florida. They're going to need it. Again, thank you for these video's. I thoroughly enjoy them and they are very educational!

I’m the type of guy that gets offended when you talk negative about my city.
    Too many memories.
New York is the city that taught other cities how to be cities.
(Lemme clap back a minute and set the record straight!)
If a New Yorker visited your little town he was viewed as a celebrity. (That guy is from New York. Oh wow!”)
No town, no country, no people had more clout than us.
The moment the Dutch landed here it was about business. Money!
“Money” allows other things to be created.
“A business man” from anywhere else who thought he was hot learned quickly that he was not when he came here.
“The entertainment industry” was born on these same streets.
When television was new, all the writers came from here. Why? They were New Yorkers.
    We know everything.
    We did everything first.
Talking bad about New York in 2024 is like talking about the guy that invented the wheel when he became an old man.
Most of the things young people think are “cool” today were invented by a New Yorker.
Pop music today is hip hop based. Hip Hop is a New York invention.
Keep walking straight for about 100 blocks, cross a bridge, make a right then a left

That’s where hip hop was born.
    The subway?
Millionaires and poor people used to use it together.
Nobody knows your business in New York so you can be whatever you want to be.
    We don’t care.
Every single day of my childhood was like a movie.
You couldn’t wait to go outside. When you were home you’d be missing something. Then you’d be pissed that you weren’t there.
We’re storytellers because we got more stories than anywhere on earth.
You can’t “out verbal” a true New Yorker.
People hated us because of you sucked, it was our job to let you know.
New Yorkers were not nice! Nice is fake.
    New Yorkers were kind!
If you ever were in trouble and needed help, it was your lucky day if a New Yorker was around you.
We knew how to do everything.
In the mind of a New Yorker, everybody else was stupid 😂.
People hated us and we knew why.
It’s a fast town so if you hold up the line, even an old lady would be like “cmon hurry up. What are you new? You can’t count or something?
Then others would chime in and we’d crack up laughing. But if you didn’t have enough money someone would give it to you.
    Rough but kind.
Best place in the world to be broke was NY.
Nobody looked down on a broke person. I’ve had amazing philosophical conversations with guys that lived in a cardboard box.
We never looked down on the poor.
    Everybody was an entertainer .
    Bold and high minded.
We had reason to be. We New Yorkers!
Not a town for the timid!
But if you were timid you could easily find your personality type.
I didn’t know what I was a part of till I went other places.
There’s no “other place” like NY.

It's as if you are floating above everyone else moving at a fast rate of speed, but slow enough for us to enjoy it and take in the sights. At times, it seems as if you will run into people and cars but it never happens. It's truly Amazing! lol

My town! Still love the memory of it.
The video starts on 30th street and 8th avenue then heads north.
8th avenue has been “seedy” since the early 60s.
I couldn’t find a clock but I knew its was late at night (or early in the morning. Same thing)
95% of the people you see were not born in a New York hospital.
So you’re not seeing true native New Yorkers.
But it’s midtown Manhattan. The first place most out of towners go.
I know people that came to visit for the weekend and wound up staying 40 years never returning home .
They got trapped by something and remained.
    Even people on their honeymoon.
I don’t see (memory associate) New York with what this video shows.
I got a story for just about every block shown in this video.
America was always two things. New York and everywhere else.

I'm not afraid of it or anything some of the other posters are mentioning regarding homelessness or dirty streets. I just think it looks dull. Incredibly boring compared to what it was 30 to 40 years ago. The nightlife seems Dead to me. At 3 AM in New York 30 years ago those streets would've been 10 times more crowded. Theree used to be after hours clubs and regular bars open till 4 AM people, forget that last call for most bars in York is not 2 a.m. it's 4 AM. I didn't see any of that in this video.
