    Hard to believe I’ve been a fan of Bon Jovi for 37 years now. First time I heard them I was 15.
    Everything that Jon has done after Richie left has had a Destination Anywhere feel to it. Sambora was a huge part of the best Bon Jovi songs.
    These guys together literally wrote the soundtrack to my life. To me they are the Rolling Stones of the 80’s-90’s

      Ken you are by far the best vocal teacher out there. Your version of separate ways by journey is the greatest I've ever heard and they are all great. Thank you so much for the videos and I will be getting your course pretty soon.

  • @keepthefaith-theconcerttribute

    Thanks Ken as a guy who has been tributing to Bon Jovi for 15 years now I wish I had seen this sooner. I emulate more of his live sound which is a lot less rasp and I go between head voice and chest voice depending on the power and tone required. We do everything though a half step down like they do live so kudos to you for still singing it in key. That's impressive!!! Really impressed with this. Not sure as to what level I would classify myself is a lead singer. I would like to think advanced with room for improvement as we get back out there next year. It's been a year plus since we have done anything and I haven't kept my vocals warm due to a very tough year with covid and people I lost. Cheers and keep doing what you are doing!!

    Jon Bon Jovi has always been my favourite singer and a true role model. I am such a great admirer of your work, too. Your analysis is complete to the last point. Livin On A Prayer is an unbelievably difficult song and it is only for trained and skillful professional singers which shows how great of a singer Jon was. He still is of course and I see that since This House Is Not For Sale he managed to finally recover and "reclaimed" some of his 80s high notes. Ken, I asked you in several other videos to try Gotthard's - Anytime, Anywhere. There are some blends in your voice that totally resemble the late Steve and it would be a great addition to your collection. Keep rocking!

    I don't really like that Jon vs Richie singing comparison, because it doesn't make any sense, not in the band. Richie wasn't interested in being the singer of Bon Jovi, he liked being the singer, but especially the guitarist, of his solo albums. In the band, he loved his role. That's it.
    And back to Jon, let's stop considering always the usual songs, the usual live shows... Jon was much more than that. His voice had many shades, because no matter how many vocally powerful singers were there, he had something almost no one else had: versatility. He could sing everything and always seem believable and at the same time do a great entertaining show. Listen to some different performances than than usual ones, go forward in time, for example in 97... His live performances were spectacular: brilliant and confident voice. An example: "Keep the Faith/Sympathy for the Devil" medley at Wembley Stadium, on August 16th, 1997.
    Jon Bon Jovi is much more than Prayer and Wanted.
    That said, we all surely agree that today there is a big problem and I don't know if it's due just to the natural loss of voice (and I agree with those who wrote that post-Richie depression did matter) or if there is a real health problem with his throat.
    I apologize for the length of the comment (and my spelling mistakes), but I really wanted on to express my (humble) opinion, because I am very sorry that Jon's vocal skills are minimized.
    Peace from Italy :)
    Claudia alias Jonny

    Thank you very much Ken for this video and for the anecdote of Jon and the wood in Russia hahaha.
    I agree with you that to be a great singer, is to have a package of several things and for me, Jon is it.
    Richie was also a fundamental part of the band, not only for his guitar skills, but for his backing vocals, for his contributions in lyrics and compositions etc, and as you also say, Jon's voice is not what it was years ago, and now is when he would need a good vocal support. Hopefully someday we can see them together again.
    Thank you very much again for this great video, you know this is my favorite band haha, and a big hug from Spain for you Ken.

    I think what makes Jon Bon Jovi interesting as a singer, for better or worse, is that his voice has changed over the years. Obviously, Jon's voice is not what it used to be. He started out as a rock singer with a "lion-like" voice, but over the years he sang with a more nasal tone, so he could have been a country singer, and now his voice has changed again to sound like a folk singer. In my opinion, his vocal peak was during the "Keep The Faith" era, but I also love the "Lost Highway" album, and there are songs on there where he didn't have to scream and sing with a softer tone because it fits the songs. Obviously the problem for him is that he still has to sing some of those old songs in concert 😀. He even has trouble singing some of the mid range songs nowadays, so I can't imagine him ever singing "Dry County", "I Believe" or "These Days" again. I think what really caused his voice to go downhill was Richie Sambora's departure. I'm sure there was a psychological aspect to it. There was a big change in his vocal sound after 2013.
    By the way: I wouldn't consider myself a singer, although a couple of singers I know personally have heard me sing and said it sounds decent, and I actually sang "Bad Name" once in karaoke and actually made it, but found that for me the limit is reached at the highest note in the chorus of "Bed Of Roses" 😁.

    I've been a #1 Bon Jovi fan since I was 4 years old and it's interesting how I've subconsciously taken his Jersey accent into my own voice as I've been trying to learn how to sing. I hear myself back and I think to myself "wow that's Jon coming through there" haha! Thanks for these tips!!
    Two points you brought up Ken I'd like to comment on - Jon's voice: he also blew out his voice repeatedly while touring in the late 80s AND he smoked cigarettes from '96 to ~2010. I don't know his personal vocal habits but I'm willing to bet cigarettes were a huge factor in ruining his voice.
    Secondly - I think a lot of Richie's resentment came from Jon putting so much faith and realiance on their producer/guitarist John Shanks. Richie wanted to rock harder and Jon wanted more commercial-friendly music (Jon's a big fan of $$$ and it's a shame). The albums since Have a Nice Day have all been going downhill and I blame Shanks. That's my two cents anyway lol

    Yes Ken, you are absolutely right! Jon had a total package! Bon Jovi has always been a great band live. I'm Polish but as a fan I have been to many of their concerts and they have always been awesome. My favourite ones were two nights in a row at old Wembley Stadium in London in August 2000. They played almost for3 hours because the shows were the last ever events organized there before knocking it down. What energy, what passion there was! Really amazing! So thank you for this video and your interesting remarks! I wish you would work with Jon to help him regain his charismatic voice! 🙏🙏🙏 You are defenitely the best vocal coach ever!👍 You've got no competition! Your versions of Living, Blaze Of Glory and Wanted are a knockout! You are such a genuine person with huge knowledge and passion to music. You deserve lots of respect. Thank you Ken! Ken, really enjoyed this one. It seems like you used what he has done and how he sings to provide a map on how to approach the craft. You make a great point about "tools" I think it holds true for any endeavor that first one must have "tools" to be able to use. Then one must know how to use those "tools" properly. A person with a hammer only in their took box won't be able to create something that is as complex and amazing as a person with a hammer, a few screwdrivers, a drill, a saw, a putty knife, a level, a chalking gun. But if you don't know how to use your tools what you create will not be as good as someone who does know how to use them. The techniques you talk about----I do not know if they are the tools are if they are how to use them---or both, but I get the idea.
    I liked that you brought up areas of being a successful singer that are beyond pure vocal ability. Excellent points you made!! You touched on song writing----I miss "the old days" where a lot more people wrote their own songs---I really believe it made a difference in how they performed. I don't know that Springstein could have ever became "the total package" as an entertainer if he had only done songs written by others.
    I do know if I ever tried to learn to sing, I could never succeed without having it demonstrated.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 3 lety

      People say "You should sound like you and no one else".
      I say. "Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone".
      But, we all have influences and it is the sum of those influences, and
      how we "re-present" them with our own style, that makes us great.
      In addition, If we pick a difficult cover song where the bar is set
      high, this is an excellent grading scale to see how well our singing
      technique is working. This is also true for learning in different styles as this increases our vocabulary and tool box for diverse singing and helps us find what we like or don't like to build our own unique voice.
      In all of my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken
      Tamplin and my students sound like themselves. But, we have a flavor of the original artist demonstrating their "style" safely when, often, the original artist lost their voice due to poor technique.

      @@kentamplin Thanks for the information! I have been amazed in the past for how many people some artists have influenced their career. I think that could be another indication of "success". In all the covers you do, I will say you are definitely you in your performance!

    Hi Ken, I state that David Coverdale and Ronnie James Dio are two singers that I really like in the hard / heavy rock genre. I love David's very beautiful vocal timbre and I love that Ronnie's big and powerful voice! But all this to tell you that when I listen to you like in this video I hear these influences come out of you (also from other singers in other songs).
    So, I smile because I like you a lot (!) because you demonstrate that you personalize what you sing! In fact, I agree with you that all the "baggage" of influences that each of us has, make us become ourselves and therefore original and, for me, this also applies to drummers, guitarists ect. For what concerns Bon Jovi for me he is another great singer but obviously I'm sorry that his voice hasn't been the same in a few years.
    I sincerely wish him to be able to do something.
    Thanks again Ken for this video.

    Good stuff, especially what you said in the last part of the video...From my point of view, anyone in the domaine of singing, whether amateur or professional, should start somewhere, and often that "somewhere" is a singer...We always try to simulate/imitate the voices of our faouvirte singers and little by little we begin to find our own tune...I started trying to sound like James Hetfield and ended up sounding like me (not sure if that phrase makes sense) thank you Ken.

      In all of my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin and my students still sound like themselves, but we have a flavor of the artist and is meant to demonstrate how their "style" can be achieved safely. This showcases range, vocal timber and style for different color and flavors for diverse singing.

    I think "Runaway" (their first hit) only hit #38 on the Top 40 in 1984. I know it would have been a bigger hit if it were released after they were red hot, because they had 3 number ones after that with "You give love a bad name," "Living on a Prayer," and "Bad Medicine."
    All of those songs are amazing. Man I miss MTV in the 80s.

    i would love your opinion on Jon Bon Jovi's voice on their performance when Bon Jovi was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" a few years ago. Jon's voice sounded extremely damaged in this performance. It like when he tries to go into total full voice his throat is trying to close up on him, almost like a mild vocal paralysis!This was more than a one time occasion, I've watched some live performances since then on CZcams and his voice sounds totally destroyed/changed. He does some tricks and maneuvers with his voice now to compensate for this vocal damage, but it really sounds like his original voice is gone for good! Your thoughts?

    • @a.b.317
      @a.b.317 Před 3 lety +1

      Too many years of bad personal habits like smoking and drinking and repairing the damage with steroids. Never focusing on the real problem. It’ll take its toll after too many years of doing that way

    I have to agree with you, he needs to get a fine tuning I honestly can't watch his video's anymore, but you Mr. Tamplin have an amazing voice you could fill in for anyone, your like the ventriloquists of rock musicians, it's obvious you've taken very good care of your voice over the years. Question though, in many interviews Jon has done when JBJ were on their extensive tour he said he voice was shot and the Dr would give him cortisone shots in the neck to help him get through, I'm sure that wasn't a very bright idea, how, in the long run would that actually effect his voice?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 3 lety

      Cortisone will help with inflammation but does nothing for poor technique and in fact allows the damage to continue developing, unchecked. Inflammation and pain is the body screaming "Stop what you're doing!"
