In other to get a perfect casting you'll need to preheat your mold blocks to around 1000 degrees this will allow your metal to stay in its liquid state longer that way it can flow into every area
I usually torch the molds first..get them up to 300 or so if I can. The cnc is from aliexpress and works surprisingly well for the price. Im waiting for weather to warm up before i make new stuff.
a way to make a mol without anyone an to graphite powder, mix it with some clay, and add some water, (dont mix after putting the water in or else the clay will likely stick to other pieces of clay, not graphite) then press it an object making the graphite mold or while its still wet, putting in the design by hand. You could even use a chisel by hand if its required to get a very precise mold. This would
The CNC is a t8 "clone" from aliexpress--The bed is bigger than the t8 and you can make it even bigger if you buy the right extruded aluminum and JB weld it together (which I did). That was done more for increasing support spots than because the models I make are big..
Do you sell these molds by any chance im just starting to cast and want to buy some coin molds as i do not have any of the equipment besides a smeltery
Sorry--I can't do any commissioned work--don't really have the time for it. I just putter on the side and its been 8 weeks at least since I fired up the mini furnace (too damn cold here)
Do you know anyone who does? Or that Might? I’m looking for my own work, but am too busy to learn a new software program. Maybe in the future, but for now, this would amplify my current hobby
@@montereybaymurals gosh this is a very old post now. I have moved on and would happily give tips and suggestions to help. Graphite is ok and great to start, but there is a much better way.
I'm just experimenting with this stuff myself, but I thing you would need to make 2 part mold in which you can get some pressure with gravity, kind of like a water tower to get more detail. Nevertheless cool molds!
if you make the top perfectly flat.. and make a side entry spru hole or even a top down spru hole to about/38 wide of a hole out vortext to a half dollar on a new flat block. On trhe other block make 6 or 8 10 air lines to let air escape quickly. clamp the 2 blocks together heat them up while melting the silver then pour it all in 1 quick shot and the detail will be perfect. Your using weight pulse compacting because the silver or metal will press against the flat block pushing the face into the model better.
On that machine (which I don't have anymore)it was a 1/8" v bit with a .1mm tip. I can usually cut 1 mold per bit as the graphite chews them up pretty quickly.
Too Many Hobbies awesome! Thanks for the reply.. is it possible for you to show or email me how you modeled and made them? I’ve been doing them on my channel by hand but yours look great! Just picked up almost that exact same machine but still trying to figure it all out. I’ll gladly mention you in my videos and give you credit and a link back
Too Many Hobbies yeah that’s cool.. no rush. Do your thing and whenever you get a chance... I have so many projects I’m working on already it’s all good but would love to see how you do it 👍🏻
That is awesome you can make the mold then pour into it to see if it works. This will set you apart from other mold makers because a lot of them don’t pour silver they just make the molds.
I know nothing about graphite molds but im curious if i could use the mold as a crucible itself with a propane torch to melt brass. Basically what im asking is if itll ruin the mold
there are graphite crucibles so in principle you could, only problem is probably crucible lives matter less than mold lives...unless you can make them your own like in the video...
Jonathan Popham mate you probably already found it but eBay just type graphite blocks. There about $4:20aus delivered each. I have bought heaps and have made a couple molds by hand , they are not as perfect as these ones but they get the job done my friend . Check it out my way if ya interested I poured brass and copper into mine as silvers too expensive for me🤨👍🏻

Your mold temperature is much too cold when you are doing your pour. You may burn a couple of molds up trying to find the max temp for pouring but you will get much better detail. Make sure you pour immediately after preheating. 300 degrees is not enough.
I would love a round made. If you are willing I will pay. I have been looking for coin press dies but I have not had luck. I can use a punch stamp on the rear after I pour the silver. Thank you for reading. Kon

Hey man a possible solution to your lack of detail would be to set the mold on a vibrating plate to help it get down into those crevices a little better.
Hi, Awesome video bro!! Ty for sharing 👍 Is there any chance you can add the links of the sites you're using and where you got the CnC machine for Us All in the Description Thank you for your time 👍👍👍👍👍
There would be nothing simple about that process. Between the high compression, high heat and exotic binders to get the dust to form into a block it would be impossible for a hobbyist. Not to mention creating a positive mold to withstand all that...cutting a premade block that can be bought for 5-10$ is vastly easier.

Can you use steam pressure with these to get a more detailed casting or will that ruin th emold over time?
What kind and size router bits do you use?
It's awesome what some relatively cheap pieces of equipment can do.

I like the rough edges too maybe just a little rounded off but it gives it a badass poured look.

What size are the graphite blocks and how deep do u route the coin?
have you tried adding some sort of flux to the mold before pouring?

do these graphite moulds take pressure- or do they powderize under pressure?
Thanks for this film. I was wondering... did you do some upgrades on your cnc for the motor mount?

how would you get this to work for both sides of the coin?
did you try heating the mold up before pouring? that would probably make the details come out better

I know this is an old video, but what cnc machine did you get from ali?
Its been a loong time but I think it was just a generic 3018 cnc with the 775 spindle. it ran grbl and was pretty fun for its size.
What bit did you use?
1/8" 20 degree v-bit (basically a tiny engraving bit) to do it again, I would rough with a 1/8" single flute, then fine detail with the engraving bit.

I currently have a home made one based off the open builds sphinx design. One of these days I'll post a video overview of it.
