Financial censorship, or cutting off access to the global banking system, is one of the most powerful tools that governments have for punishing people.
The U.S. Department of Justice used it in 2013 through a program known as Operation Choke Point. It went after firearms dealers, payday lenders, and sex workers by pressuring banks to cut off their access to financial services.
The federal government blocks marijuana businesses that are legal under state law from opening bank accounts.
And the U.S. Department of the Treasury financially censors other governments around the world that commit human rights abuses or senselessly attack other nations, most recently Russia for invading Ukraine.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau financially censored the Canadian truckers occupying the country's capital city, Ottawa.
It's clear that governments can use financial censorship to squeeze worthy and unworthy targets alike for the time being, but it's less clear if governments can maintain this power for much longer. The moment raises a pressing question for cryptocurrency enthusiasts: Does bitcoin solve this?
Does a global, decentralized monetary system that nobody can manipulate or control take away the power of the state to use financial censorship as a weapon, for good or for ill?
A surprisingly successful bitcoin-based crowdfunding campaign called "Honk Honk HODL," which raised more than $1 million worth of bitcoin for the Canadian truckers, shed some additional light on that question. And the answer appears to be, "eventually, maybe, but there's more work to be done."
Nick, who goes by @NobodyCaribou on Twitter, started talking with Canadian truckers in early February, teaching them about bitcoin, raising small amounts to hand out, and eventually partnered with a pro-bitcoin CZcamsr to launch Honk Honk HODL on the bitcoin-based crowdfunding site Tallycoin.
"My idea was like, if we get to a thousand or 2,000 dollars, and I can go around and give a hundred bucks to different truckers, that would be amazing. It would be a cool experiment to do. So why not do it?" says Caribou.
Then crypto investors Jeff Booth and Greg Foss jumped in to lend their names and credibility-as did the popular Canadian CZcamsr and streamer Ben Perrin, who goes by "BTC Sessions."
"So things just started snowballing a lot quicker than anticipated," says Perrin. "My initial thought was, 'Oh, maybe we'll get a few thousand dollars and some people can buy some gas cards and some food or something.'"
But the fundraiser took off after GoFundMe was pressured into canceling a fundraiser that had accumulated $10 million for the Canadian truckers, and then a judge blocked the distribution of $9 million from another crowdfunding platform. And when the Canadian government announced it would be freezing truckers' bank accounts, some supporters of the movement began to turn to cryptocurrency.
The Honk Honk HODL fundraiser eventually surpassed $1 million U.S. dollars' worth of bitcoin.

The other phenomenon that occurs as government controls more aspects of personal finances is the black and underground markets. 1. That's a good question.
      2. If the government's currency is collapsing, and it's worth less and less to everyone, and there's a competitor, history shows that people will move to the competitor. That government pressure would become increasingly difficult to enforce, in that any business following that rule would quickly lose money, and that the people tasked with stopping them would have less reason (money) every day to enforce the rule.
      3. In other words, you can only be so tyrannical with money if there's an alternative.
      4. A big reason why Trudeau ceased the Emergencies Act was because the tyrannical acts against peoples' bank accounts led to a run on banks. That leads to the "crackup boom" (currency collapse) and most of a government's power comes not from taxation but from inflation. See #3.

I ask this with the risk of sounding stupid, but is there precedent for the government to tell you what currency you can accept in exchange for your good/service?
I know they did seize people's gold in the past but Bitcoin when used properly isn't something they could seize. Was gold illegal to accept as tender historically when the government banned it?
I think it's a good question you're asking. I would imagine if we got to that point the people would need to revolt.

The govt will still crack down on people for what they will call tax fraud - "You are still open, yet you somehow have $0 income in USD? You're accepting BTC directly, aren't you? Send in the thugs!". There's also the question of accessing the blockchain - which, to my knowledge, though secure, is still online - and ISPs are then another weak point.
It's a chicken and egg thing. The chicken and egg problem is solved by an act of God - the creation of a chicken already capable of laying an egg. You almost need an act of God to resolve this as well - convince EVERY person and business to start accepting crypto directly AT THE SAME TIME.

My concern is government will make it illegal for business to accept as payment and illegal to exchange to other currency. But after seeing the potential tyrannical control of government I pray there will be a decentralized option they don’t have such power over.

The key, is that the cloud would only operate on nodes which are *moving*. When the trucks come to a stop, the node would migrate the data it's processing to another node and zero itself out. As a result, this cloud would be impossible to serve a warrant on. Perhaps someone could develop a form of cryptocurrency that could run on such a network?

It’s a bit unclear at the moment. The law suit will be a determining factor and the result of that could be years down the road, so nobody really knows yet. This all relatively a new thing.

Maybe he could’ve bought thousand dollar Visa cards and pass them out but then he would have no proof that he gave it away to people

Isn't there like a printable barcode that securely and anonymously links to an individual's cryptocurrency wallet? If so, the truckers could've printed out their respective barcodes and glued them onto their trucks. Passerbys could receive and relay funding from elsewhere as a mass swarm, quickly scanning barcodes and donating cryptocurrency to the truckers. Problem here is that he is just one man.

I did not see a bitcoin censorship resistance test !~ I did see the on ramp and off ramp censorship being tested ! In that regard many platforms failed to live up to the spirit of what we expect !
But Nothing can stop you if you have people who know how it work on both ends !

Bitcoin is the future of money....been saying this for years, I've been called a fool, I've been made fun of for chasing "magic internet money". To see the dream of Bitcoin come to reality makes me incredibly proud of this community. Fiat actively steals from you, every second of the day it loses value.

Monero is the solution to all the problems listed in the video. Google it, it's what normies think bitcoin actually is
