  • When you say Holika Dahan and Holi, you say Cautál!
The exciting folk music originates from Northern India, in the regions where Bhojpuri is spoken. Cautál has spread worldwide through the indentured labourers and their descendants.
Nowadays, we often see chautál on cultural stages at (mainly) Holi celebrations. In the traditional form, the chautál singers go from house to house to sing. They line up in two rows facing each other and sing accompanied by a dholak (drum) and jhál (small cymbals)
The melodies are relatively simple, but there are many
    variations with rhythm and tempo.
Deities, such as Ram and Krishna, are often praised in chautál-songs, but there are also songs about Mahatma Gandhi or Swami Dayanand. And these days there are also songs about playfullness between young lovers.
Watch how Cautál is played in different parts of the world.
PS. Maybe you are used to writing #Chowtal / #Chautal, but the official Sarnami spelling is #cauthál. It's commonly pronounced as #chautaal. In every country its spelled in a differenty!
