    Three-year-old Farah lives in a Baghdad orphanage. After numerous operations on her badly deformed face, she still struggles with "swallowing, breathing, eyesight". The government has approved further treatment abroad, but "we're waiting for them to issue a passport. She has no papers". In a nation with no proper social security system, help can be a long time coming. "There are millions of disabled people in Iraq. Over 50% of the population receive a disibility allowance", explains Minister for Social Affairs, Dr Al-Rubayie.

    I love the way the orphanage carers talked about being substitute mothers and loving the children. Not all seem to think or talk like that. You can tell the affection they showed children on screen is something they readily and regularly give off screen also.

    In UK here, there's operations that fix her condition. My cousin Tim was born with heir lip and cleft palate. He had many operations and when he recovered we hardly knew he was born with it. Sadly he got bullied at school because of his learning disabilities and sadly he took his own life age 18 years old. He would of been late 20's early 30's, if he was still alive. Miss him so much 😢

      If jumping the line, reduced the number of visits to Iraq, cut down the expenses, & expedited creation of this video, then the special privilege that was granted was not only a goodwill but necessary.
      It was done for the benefit of 1 defenceless child & raising awareness & empathy in the world.
      Hopefully this video results in funding Farah’s operations.
      There used to be a time when many of these countries were rich now they are poor. All the institutions & organizations including the passport office operate with limited number of employees & resources.

    I don’t want to be critical of the culture, but some of these children born with severe deformities are the result of first cousins getting married to each other. It is not only allowed, but encouraged. It’s a practice that needs to stop through more awareness and education. Many other countries with similar cultures have the same problem with the high rate of birth deformities, most notably is Pakistan.

    • @hassanfiras5802

    • @imperator692

      These sorts of defects were extremely rare in Iraqi before 2003. This is the fault of the US government for using illegal radioactive munitions, in civilian areas no less. Also, cousin marriage is not encouraged, and in the Arab world its practiced by not many people. Lastly, focusing on a matter as trivial as that takes attention away from the criminal actions of the US military in Iraq which led to so many cases like this little girl.

    • @leliapurky9462
      @leliapurky9462 Před 22 hodinami

      No, it’s because of the bombs dropped by the US government! People, Mary cousins in all cultures. Did you know that child marriage is still legal in the United States? so before you talk about Iraq, and assuming that everyone there marries their cousins, let’s talk about what happens in America. Also, Iraqis are not a monolith. Just because someone in Iraq might marry their first cousin doesn’t mean everyone does.

    • @christinesyntax4067
      @christinesyntax4067 Před 21 hodinou

      @@leliapurky9462 First of all, these videos focus on the Lurhs/Bahktiari tribes living in the Zagros mountains of Western Iran, not
      Iraq. And second of all, marriage among first cousins with these tribes is encouraged and not discouraged. There were a couple of episodes featuring government doctors making house calls to the Peren family discouraging them from continuing the practice of marriage among first cousins. They explicitly told the Peren family that Ava’s and Mohammed’s disabilities were mostly caused by their patents being first cousins. It is for this very reason that the family is encouraging Mehdi and his fiance , who are also first cousins, to undergo DNA testing before they get married and have children to make sure that their genes are incompatible for having normal children. The Iranian government is sending doctors and social workers to many of the mountain villages to stop them from engaging in the practice of inter-familial marriages. Many of the Royal families in Europe used to engage in these practices, too, as with other cultures throughout the world. Thirdly, many more bombs were dropped in Europe during WWII than in Iraq, and birth abnormalities did not persist in subsequent generations like they have in the villages of many third world countries.

  • @debbiewilson9139
    @debbiewilson9139 Před 3 lety +3

    These birth defects have been going on in this country way before the war. There is inadequate maternity care, some women never see a doctor, and deliver at home. They also allow first cousins to marry, which also is why so many birth defects.

      Cut the crap on the ableism!! Farah is not a ‘poor child’ and disability is not a bad thing! Farah will face discrimination and barriers because of her disability, and her disability will make some things difficult, but it does not mean she is a pity prop or that living with a disability is inherently bad!!

    I know what its like to suffer as a child PTSD through being orphaned, put in foster care and be put in multiple homes it follows you into adulthood as you never had a 'normal childhood because adults take it away selfishly they can't understand you, how broken you are amd give up' A replacement mother is a blessing for orphaned children in foster services, but it can never, never replace the warmth and unconditional love a Mother and a home away from an Orphanage can give a child.
    Seeing her brings me to tears she's a beautiful blessing from god, its what is inside that counts. If I could afford to give her the procedures she needs for a better life and care for her and afford to go there I'd hold her in my arms tell her no cry, no cry little one I'm hear for you I won't leave you and adopt her and bring her home to my country and take care of her and possibly adopt a 2nd or 3rd child bassed on the financial situation.

      Shelia Bauer I think incest only happens in the west. There’s no such thing in any other places in the world. It might still happen but it’s not a common thing to the point where people have name or word for it. By having a name for it proves it’s common in the west.

      Yes She'll a, I understand what your saying
      What you wrote is just a thought you had,
      As your not a scientist, your an everyday person that doesn't know when there's a child born of incest, these deformities that Farah suffers terribly from, are from toxic chemical poison that causes these horrific human and animal also vegetable deformities and health issues, The same as what happend in Chernobyl only that was radioactive destruction, still to this day babies and animals are being born with deformities and health issues there,
      Babies that are born out out of incest have different types of abnormalities and deformities, Sometimes so minimal you wouldn't tell, Sometimes only mental issues, with no deformities, I think not % sure it depends on how close the family members were to each other as to how severe, I'm gonna research that one to be sure Cheers
