    As someone who works at a bank, and initially thought "i'm really good at this, let's do it forever", hearing you say "just because I'm good at it doesn't mean I have to like it" is really helping me cope with the realization that I hate my job 💕 really empowering me to think about what I want to do wether than what I "should" do ❤️

    Mosby snoozing on the couch was a nice comfort during the heavier topics in this episode. A fluffy, content dog helps ease my anxiety, even if I only see him on screen.

      As someone who has been in a shooter situation those drills are horrific. Going through those situations made the real thing 100x worse. My mom never went through drills or anything and in that situation she was fine. That was 3 years ago and I still have ptsd and nightmares from it

    In education on every level they have you go through active shooters drills. I worked for a university for a testing center and we had to talk about an active shooter plan. The told us to run and save ourselves which is very different than what they tell you to do in a school building.
    Thank you for shining a light on what it’s truly like to work in education. It is so much more than what people think

    • @ladiesandtangents

      It’s such a traumatic experience that is sadly a necessity in all levels of education. My sisters were in a library on campus once when a shooter was on campus and thinking about that still makes me sick. I hope more people can open up about the struggles of this being our “normal”! Thank you for sharing your experience!

    It for sure takes a special person to be a teacher. Regardless of if you are not a teacher currently or were a teacher in the past you truly are a special person. The non-verbal girl that you mentioned and the way that you talked about her shows how much you cared for your students. Please don't ever feel like you are less of a person or teacher because you are not a teacher anymore. You are still a very special person to the kids and the parents of the kids that you did teach. I can promise you that you do hold a special place in their hearts. I say this as a mom of 2 special needs kids. I can tell you that my kids teachers that took the time to care about, love on, and actually got to know my boys are some of the people that I have cherished the most. The kids have a special bond with those people. They are the ones that did all that they could to help my boys be successful in life and they are the people that my kids grew with the most. I can only imagine how draining it could be to feel like you had to hide part of yourself. As a parent I do not get why people have to be assholes and judge you for being a normal person. In my opinion I need my kids teachers to be themselves in school and outside of schools otherwise they are going to feel the same things that you have had to deal with. That is bullshit and to be honest if I was somewhere and I saw one of my boys teachers or therapist I would be buying them a drink and telling them to have one on me to thank them for all the shit I know my kids have put them through. You two ladies are fucking amazing and awesome people. Thank you for doing this podcast/youtube channel I love it!!!

    I live in the UK and honestly blows my mind how active shooter drills are just kinda considered the norm when in reality it's traumatic even thinking about it. I have recently watched 'Killer Queens' cover Columbine too so it's harrowing to think of how students and staff must feel. Will always hope for some major change as no one should have to leave the house with that potential fear, for something which should be more preventable. Also love you ladies. Have decided to go back and binge the older videos since recently getting into your podcast. Keep being your boss ass selves. Also thank you for sharing your true selves xxxx

    Without the Arts we as humans would be suffering so much worse than we are now. There is SO MUCH VALUE in the Arts and I wish society as a whole could see that. I also help teach Special Education as an inclusion aid for elementary and even though I love the kids, I don't think I want to be a teacher. I've considered it but ultimately my passions are in writing and creating artwork.

    I love how you all mentioned that we are vastly different people at different ages. I definitely agree. The person I was in college/my early 20s is NOT who I am now. And while there are similarities, I have some differences in my core values in comparison to her. What she wanted out of life and out of a job/career is completely different to what I want now. People don't talk about this enough--we change throughout life and who we are when we are young may be temporary.

There’s room in the industry for you and there is only one person who can capture the world the way you see it and that is IMPORTANT! You definitely don’t need to have everything figured out, but if there’s any advice I could have given myself it’s “do not allow other people to place a cap on your potential. I listen to you morning to night, when I’m alone and with my son or at school on my AirPods, listening to you guys makes me feel like I’m ok being who I am, like I am ok just being me and not trying to be anyone else. Listening to you guys has made me realize that I am or broken, that I don’t need to be “fixed”, and that I am perfectly imperfect exactly the way I am.
    Thank you for showing me this, and showing me the deepest parts of your emotional mental selves.

    I know this was done a while ago but I haven't been able to stop thinking about this podcast since I listened to it. It is exactly like you said so raw and real and it opened my eyes. As someone who lives in the UK I struggle to even comprehend some of the stresses living in America brings and to hear this felt so important to me and made me remember to keep striving to do the things I love not just the things I am good at or to reach "my full potential". I have always been very academic and people expect me to be a fancy psychologist after uni but I think I would be happier in a slightly lower position even if the pay is less and I COULD achieve more but this reminded me I don't have to. This was a lot but I just wanted to say I can tell this was hard for you but thank you.

    Yessss so much this about the career paths! My husband and I are good at our jobs and we make ok money, but damn dude we hate our jobs and the last few months we've been seriously considering switching it up. Thanks for the encouragement, it's important to be happy and to put your mental health first, than to feel resentment towards a place you go basically every single day even if you're financially comfortable. (We aren't rich by any means, but we don't stress about bills anymore).

  • @ashleysartattack5600
    @ashleysartattack5600 Před 3 lety +1

    Hey! I came over from tiktok! And I resonate with this conversation so much! I’m 27 and I was a college dropout who went the opposite way, and have discovered within the last year that I really love teaching kids. But I wanted to be a fashion designer my entire life. I was a straight A student and went full throttle from a very small rural town to NY to pursue fashion design and I fricking HATED it. The professors at my school were so extremely rude to me that I left crying a lot of times. They called me stupid to my face. They told me to go back to the farm I came from. The students were horrific. Cut throat, stole, and lied and sabotaged each other nonstop. I just wasn’t built for that life. I’m a really shy, sweet, honest person. I wasn’t meant to go be a bully to “get ahead.” And for a long time I felt like a failure. But my mental and physical health got so bad from the stress there. I had put all this pressure on myself thinking that I had chosen this path, so I needed to stick to it for the rest of my life. And that’s not the case. So I came home and got a regular job that I happen to LOVE. I started working for Hallmark. And they’re seriously the best.
    And when the pandemic started, I live in a neighborhood with a ton of kids and young couples. It’s a military town. And I would constantly hear parents talking about how their kids were failing and giving up and didn’t understand the online schooling. So I decided to start tutoring kids on my days off from my other job and I LOVE it too! And word travels so fast here because everyone works with each other and knows each other. So I’m getting more kids.
    It’s just so fantastic. I love teaching them. They’re so funny. And when I was at my college, I did have some friends who were there to become teachers, and they always said that they thought I would make a great teacher. And some of my nice professors said that too. But it just seemed so daunting at the time. But I’ve been loving the kids I work with. It’s so rewarding seeing them change and grow and trust me more. And see the younger ones reading faster and doing math problems faster. And the parents love me and trust me. It’s so different going from, “oh you’re an artist? Do you make any money from that?” To, “Aww you work with kids! That’s amazing! I could never!” And I honestly was terrible at sewing. I was never going to be a good fashion designer, but I’m a really good teacher and their grades are improving significantly!

  • @rylandnance

    I know you’re never going to read this but I’m a parkland survivor and yeah it’s fucking terrifying. I have to still do active shooter drills and it’s so triggering. During a drill I was locked outside of my class one day and wasn’t allowed back in. That happened that day as well and I had a panic attack but nobody would help me. It’s more traumatizing than the actual shooting at this point. Now with the shooting that just happened I have to hear it everywhere and it makes me sick. People post about it and talk about this stuff constantly and I’m just meant to listen. I don’t get a trigger warning on life and it sucks. The amount of times I hear about the shooting in general life is surprising. It never stops. It makes me want to never go to school ever again but I can’t.

  • @emilysweet7659
    @emilysweet7659 Před 3 lety +2

    I have always felt so bad for teachers when doing active shooter drills. They have so much responsibility on them. I remember my junior year in high school when we were doing one my calc teacher straight up told us his room is one of the least safe rooms in the building so if it's possible we should get to another room. His door opened out so barricading was practically useless and the only way out would be the roof with a steep drop so if they were also outside or if you have a disability you were screwed. There were also giant windows along one whole side of the room and it was honestly so uncomfortable doing the drills in that class.

    Hey Ladies! I do not have social media so could not DM you. I wanted to say how helpful this episode was for me. I’m a Psychologist and have been working in the system for a few years after moving on from nonprofit work. It’s been soul sucking and I’m finally at a place where I can move fully into private practice. I think this is an interesting theme for people in the workforce, not being in the right system/agency. I have many colleagues that think psychology is no longer for them but I think it is because they are being suffocated by a system that doesn’t allow out of box therapies and only does short term work. A nice thing about private is you only attract clients that are into your vibe, so I get majority feminist clients. I’d be interested in hearing your experiences if you ever used a non-private therapist or what Ciara thinks about working as a therapist in the future and how to navigate wellness in a broken system. Thanks!!

    In high school most of our threats were from the kids, bomb and shooting, so I also freaked out because they knew the plan. There was one week where we had like two lockdowns because schools around us got targeted.

    I feel you Jeri, I honestly almost skipped the last episode because I thought it might trigger me, but I'm glad I didn't. I only taught for 2.5 years in grad school, but I couldn't continue. For me it was all about my mental health, I was dealing with undiagnosed ADHD and had a lot of unprocessed trauma that caused me to be extremely socially anxious, I couldn't connect to my students, I felt like an imposter pretending to know more than they did. I procrastinated my lesson plans so badly yet never slept at night, just a few hours here and there in the morning and sometimes I'd take a nap in the parking garage. My students suffered because I wasn't capable of preparing for them. Besides my own issues, it's an assumption in academia that if you're serious about post-grad work it's up to you to train yourself to teach, even if it isn't even your academic goal. Even if it conflicts with your actual studies. I didn't know that going in, I wish I had. Maybe I would have taken a more purposefully laissez-faire approach.

    in high school, we had active shooter trainings multiple times every year. the entire school gathered in the gym to watch presentations from our school officer and were shown graphs and statistics. we had a step by step process taught to us and shown how to barricade, told what to do if we had to go out the window, told never to grab the gun from the shooter because the police would shoot us, etc. my high school was so big that i truly felt that i would not be surprised if we had an active shooter before i graduated. thankfully we didn’t, but all of us were very prepared and trained if it did. it’s insane that America would rather have our teachers take the time and resources to prepare us for WHEN this happens, not if, rather than actually doing something to prevent it.

    I know this is old but I hated being in school because I was so scared of a School shooter. Any loud sound and I jumped. My school also had multiple threats. It's genuinely horrible.
    It's also very eye opening to hear what my teachers might've went through and what you and other teachers did go through. It's really heartbreaking because I would never want my teachers family to lose them.

    I didn’t realise active shooter drills are such a massive thing in the USA. It’s a well known joke about guns and American schools, but that sounds traumatic as hell having to practice for that. In my 13 years of school in the UK, never once have we practiced or even mentioned the possibility of have an intruder or attacker in the school. Our schools don’t have security personal or police at all, just teachers and students. It’s mad to me that there needs to be such protection around children going to school

    This video is old but i just really want to tell this story.
    The day after my quinceanera we had another big party at our house with family and close friends, it was well over 100 people in and out of the house all day. At the end of the night after everyone was super drunk and after we had finished cleaning my cousin said she lost her phone and wallet which were on the table. Everything on the tables was trash so to make it easier we just picked up the table covers with everything in them and threw them away. So at 3 in the morning my whole drunk family was searching through trash cans (remember those 100 people, it was disgusting) and eventually 30 minutes later my other cousin(main girl's sister)went into their car for a jacket and saw the phone and wallet in there. SHE HAD ALREADY PUT THEM IN THE CAR AND CAME BACK TO SAY BYE
