    I have had those cages before , but I have never seen the extension for the breeding nest like you have yours set up, where did you find, I like that idea, also yours is the first I noticed who doesn't use boxes for breeding, is this specific for the canaries or have you used it elsewhere where ? Thanks from Virginia

    Hi Chris, I've just recently got into birds and have a mixed aviary of finches and canaries, I would like to get a pair of agate canaries would they mix with other birds and do they need colour feeding in so how do I go about it? Love your videos, learning all the time 😁👍

    My female canary bird start to sit on eggs in 29 Feb the male canary not feeding female canary is it normal ? and my 2nd question is some time male and female birds both sits on eggs on same time is it normal r not?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 4 lety

      That should be fine some males will feed the hens on the nest and others won't. Its ok if they both sit in the nest it shouldn't hurt anything.

    My birds go crazy when I give them my beard trimmings of 4 inch's. I use to put spring bread cuttings in the yard and watch the wild birds collect it.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      I got the canaries from a breeder in the Seattle Washington area. He does ship but usually has a long wait time for the birds.

    Can you “create “ mosaic canaries by pairing a red bronze with a white canary ?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 4 lety

      No mosaics have been selective bred through out time and have become their own breed/type of canaries. If you put those two together you wont get a mosaic canary

    Nice I see u doing good i like the way u do the video lots of information very good do u help the parents by u feeding the chicks .... how long u have the light what time do u turn the light off

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      Jimmy Guzman, I try to not help the chicks out during the breeding season, and try to let the parents do the work. I have found that if I try to provide the canary parents with a good diet, and lighting then they usually do a good job in raising the chicks. In this video I did help feed the chick twice in one day because I saw that the other chick was starting to overpower him and he wasn't getting as much food from the parents, so thats why I helped feed him, but I try to stay away from intervening with the chicks.
      Right now i have my lights currently at 14 hours, they turn on at 7:30 am and turn off at 9:30 PM

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 2 lety

      I have tried to find the breeding cages for a while now and cannot seem to find them. Seems like the pandemic has made it difficult for these items to be found.

    What is the best way to get birds out of their cage without having
    them fly around in their cage like crazy.
    This always freaks them out!!!

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 4 lety

      Yeah theres not really a good way. the birds are going to fly around like crazy. Just try to limit the times that you need to catch the birds because it can really stress them out.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes I sell them to other breeders and also keep some to integrate into my breeding for the next year.

    can every canary can become red factor by feeding them red water?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      No, the canary has to carry the red factor gene for their feathers to turn red with color food.
      Here is a couple links that better explain red factor canaries.www.canaryadvisor.com/red-factor-canary.htmlaviculture.co/what-you-need-to-know-about-red-factor-canaries/

    How old does a finch have to be to breed. I saw something that said one year old. I have lady gouldian finches.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      Yes, it is best to let your birds turn one year of age before breeding them.

    where do you live? how do you keep your shed warm in the winter?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      I live in the western U.S. To keep my shed warm in the winter I insulated it to help keep the warm air inside and I have a heater inside the shed that is connected to a thermostat so that it keeps the shed warm at 75 degrees F

    • @haideralazzawi627
      @haideralazzawi627 Před 6 lety

      birdnerd i live in michigan and as you know we have tough winters. Not sure if one oil heater will do it. Plus, not sure how practical when it come to power bill?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      Haider, Yes winters can get below 0 F here also and can be tough. My shed is pretty small so one heater does a good job at keeping it pretty warm but the power bill definitely goes up do to the heater being on most of the winter. I'm sure there are better ways to do it that is cheaper but i'm not sure what that is.

    next time when your birds are molting out collect some feathers in a bag so you can use them in your next breeding season with your nesting materials

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 6 lety

      Thats a great idea, maybe ill collect the rest of the feathers from the chicks that are molting and save them for next season.

    I’ve been breeding gouldians budgies and canaries for a long time I would not feed Nigre it will make your birds infertile at a younger age if you don’t feed it your breeding season will be a lot better
