- Becky’s Story is a six part short online series showing how perpetrators may use social media to groom and exploit young people, shown here as one film.
Each part represents the stages of grooming and how they may look when a young person is being groomed online, specifically during lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although these stages are typical of most grooming situations.
What happens to Becky is not her fault, she is groomed by Tony as he built her trust and manipulated her into speaking to him and eventually meeting up with him. He groomed and exploited her, which is never the victim’s fault.
During lockdown, it may be difficult to spot the signs of grooming and exploitation as you aren’t spending face-to-face time with them every day. Check in with your mates regularly and spend time with them virtually if you can, it’s good for you and also means you can look out for each other. If you have noticed something strange about someone you’ve been speaking to or you notice anything about a friend that worries you, speak to a trusted adult either in your household or a trusted adult online (such as a family member not in your household, a teacher or neighbour) or you can speak to you local police on their non-emergency line 101. If you or someone you know might be in immediate danger, call 999.
