Make your Sonicare Toothbrush Last Forever

  • Current version of Sonicare toothbrush I recommend: amzn.to/4aqG8xj Electric toothbrushes have an inherent problem of trying to waterproof the internal electronics. The combination of constant water flowing downwards through a seal that vibrates means the water WILL get through pretty quickly and kill your toothbrush. High-end toothbrushes have a non-replaceable battery which means it will eventually fail and you will have a useless toothbrush while the rest of the until still functions just fine.
    To mitigate the durability problem, simply remove the brushhead and place the toothbrush upside down in a cup so that the film of water will drain away from the electronics. If you have a sealed "high-end" toothbrush, it's a bit late but you can still get the most life out of it by using this method until the internal battery dies.
    For those new to electric toothbrushes, they are great for oral hygiene when used properly. If you get the AA powered ones with an add-on rechargeable battery while parking it upside down after each use, it then become a setup that will last a very long time.
    If you would like to mimic this 'forever' toothbrush method I have been doing for the past 5 years (less the fact you still need to replace the brushheads every 3 months), here are the links to the product I recommend:
    Sonicare Essense Rechargable: amzn.to/2fWy0uy
    (This one has the same toothbrush head motion as mine but it is now rechargeable)
    The exact product I have: amzn.to/2flsQtE (It has long since been discontinued so it is sort of a vintage product now not worth buying)
    For the batteries the goes with the older model:
    Eneloop 4AA batteries and a charger: amzn.to/1ZsaPrD
    Eneloop power pack (bunch of rechargeables to use with other things) with charger: amzn.to/1TWyAd7
    Btw, Eneloops are NiMH batteries. They have a high discharge current that make it ideal to power motors such as that in the electric toothbrush. They also have great shelf life from having a very low self discharge current. Typical NiMH batteries have a much higher self discharge current which means they discharge itself if you just let it sit. .

    My wife purchased her Phillips Sonicare in 2003 and used it twice a day every day. She passed away in September 2020, but her toothbrush lives on. I have inherited it, and the original charger, with a new attachment. 17 years, and still humming along.

      I've had two that only last about 18 months. Water got into both of them. Philips really should get their act together and fix this problem from a quality and environmental perspective. Trouble is that they profit by me always having to replace them. Unfortunately the Philips Sonicare is the only recommended toothbrush by dentists especially for periodontal patients. I'm going to try and seal mine with silicon grease. I've got nothing to lose.

    I seem to be prone to plaque build up and dentist office chastises me for not brushing gum line. I said if I angled my brush any higher I'd be brushing roof of my mouth. So then I asked my hygiengist to show me what I was doing wrong. She took a regular cosmetic mirror and my soon to be awarded free toothbrush. She pointed out the white line of plaque along my front bottom gum line. She then used circular pretty firm somewhat uncomfortable brushing and it caused slight bleeding which I never see at home. I think the circular motion is the key. She said I could do same thing with my sonicare. Now I am applying firmer pressure to gum line and hopefully will get better check up in 4 months (I go in every 4 months to get teeth cleaned). No one had ever shown this to me before. Hope all this helps someone. I also bought some disclosing tablets. Thanks for the video BTB.

    Great advice. My Sonicare recently died. An autopsy showed the inside was soaked, and the battery had shorted out. There are youtubes that show how to replace the battery. Did that and Frankenbrush is alive again! Store your brush upside down and it will last much longer.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 8 lety +1

      The brush costs roughly $5 each for replacements ($4 generic brand) and lasts about 3 months. At the same time, you gotta think about how manual brushes takes a lot of manual work and the electric really does brush cleaner for the same brush time.

    I have the exact OralB brush shown in this video and I've lost track of how many years I've used it for... at least 6 or 7 years would be my guess. No special treatment. I use it 2 to 3 times per day, every day for more than the recommended 2 minutes (probably 4 to 6 minutes each time I brush... I'm anal that way). It is still going strong! No water seeping in or anything, it just keeps working. Forget about any advice from this video.
    Heck, I've even submerged the whole thing in water on many occasions to clean it off, soaking it for an extended period of time. No problems!

    • @PeterDTown
      @PeterDTown Před 7 lety +3

      I rinse it, give it a quick shake and put it in the stand. I would say it must be quite damp because gunk builds up on it. I made it a habit of completely cleaning the handle and charging base every time I change the brush head (roughly every 3 months), because there would otherwise be so much buildup it would quickly become rather disgusting.

      @BeatTheBush  Před 7 lety +1

      Hmm, perhaps the water resistance in that unit is better or the water does not contact the seal. The unit that broke from water damage was an expensive Sonicare I had before and much of any electronics that are shower proof. So then I say this out of generalization of water with mechanical vibrations. Glad yours survived for so long though and thanks for this data point.

    The water doesn't need to seap in, condensation can form inside anything so if you keep it in the bathroom even if you never got a drop inside it would still form water droplets inside just from the air around it heating up and condensing then cooling and forming water inside..

      They sure do! I had an older more expensive model and unfortunately when the internal li-ion battery died, I was unsuccessful at replacing it (must have damaged the circuit when soldering) so I'm now looking at what the current models are - it seems like the money saved by buying the Essence might be a false economy as the brush heads are quite a bit more expensive, like $14 for 2 generic ones?

      The more expensive ones are all molded with plastic that cannot be opened and put back together nicely. I'm sure you already know. you can place the charger upsidedown with a wall clamp and forget about desassembly every time. Just saying.

      Gah! It's too strong already specially after you put in new batteries. Anyhow, this one in the video finally gave in a month ago. Which is a pretty long haul!

    My old Oral B Vitality still going strong after all these years. Battery is obviously not as good as it was, but it still lasts me few brushings. No special effects, but does the job and is super sturdy. I wish i could say that for all newer Sonicare's... I've heard they have shitty ass bateries which die after 2 years or sooner. Now i'm not so sure if i want to buy one or not...

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 6 lety

      For all these things, if you are handy, you can replace the battery. The plastic molding might not look so great after you pry it open though.

      Found it (Philips Sonicare Simply Clean Xtreme: Model HX3351/HX3881) on Amazon (www.amazon.com/Philips-Sonicare-Simply-Battery-Toothbrush/dp/B008EQ57L4/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1516056830&sr=8-2&keywords=SONICARE+Simply+Clean+Xtreme+Toothbrush). Unfortunately, it is listed as "Currently unavailable". WalMart web site says the same. "smilox" has it for $34.99. Looks like Philips has discontinued this product.

    So then will brushing your teeth while showering make the life of your tooth brush also shorter?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 7 lety

      An electric one? Probably. This is due to the leak of water. Or if you tried it for a year, let me know if it lasted that long.

      BeatTheBush I didn't even think about it until watching this vid. I have been showering with my toothbrush 2 times a week or so for half a year now, I will see how it goes.

      The sonicare in this video is so old that it is no longer produced and hence the price is high. Try this one: amzn.to/4aqG8xj Having tried almost all the Sonicare models, 4000 series 7000 series 9000 series, they do get progressively better at brushing. Each one is one step better.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 2 měsíci

      Yep. Except this older type brush is no longer sold. The newer ones seems to have a better seal and the water naturally flows around and not right at the joint.

  • @afroz78699
    @afroz78699 Před 6 lety

    No doubt that by keeping the brush upside down , the performance of the brush as improves tremendously of oral b.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 6 lety

      Yup. People say it doesn't affect their brush but water damage is real. Do you trust the seal?

    • @afroz78699
      @afroz78699 Před 6 lety

      It has a good seal but I think you are right for Oral B that the water goes down the moving part and then the brush stops. Since I started acting on your advice of hanging it upside down and also by giving it two days recharge before use , the brush head does not stop while brushing . Thank you for your advice . It saved me money

    You can open it up and replace the battery,insert the charger in the bottom and twist anti clockwise and the bottom comes off then press the vibrating steel shaft on the table and push the works out of the housing,there are a few videos on CZcams showing you this

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 6 lety +1

      Sure but it'll look pretty torn up after you put it back together. Also, you might need a soldering iron for the batteries soldered in.

  • @judyhandler7848

    the toothbrush if not taken apart every time becomes moldy and gives off an odor. the price also to replace the brushes is way to high, you are trying to market like hp ink. you could give away the system to sell over priced replacments.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  Před 7 lety

      Oh yes. Gunk gets in there and it's super gross. I tend to clean the internals of the brush occasionally with an old toothbrush. Prices for the smaller brush heads tends to be cheaper but it is a sore point there.
